4 Things Daphne Oz Does to Build Confidence and Joy Every Day

Creating a life filled with confidence and joy starts with small—but regular!— rituals that help good habits stick so you get better and better at doing them. The more you do them, the more natural and fun they feel, and the more confidence and joy they bring you. Here are a few of my favorite daily tools, processes, and filters (not the digital kind) that help me try to do just that.

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU’RE ALREADY GOOD AT 

Somewhere along the way, most of us learned how to pick out the things we’re not doing well and then we think we’re obligated to work hard to get better at them. The problem is: getting better doesn’t guarantee ever actually getting good. 

In fact, there are plenty of things that, no matter how hard you work at them, they’re just never really going to be your thing. And you know what the biggest problem is when you’re spending a lot of time working hard at something you don’t love at which you’re never going to be that great? You use up all the time you could (should!) spend doing things you love and/or becoming amazing at what you are naturally inclined to do! Double suck.

Over the last couple of years, I have made a concerted effort to be honest with myself about where I can truly excel, what fills my life with pleasure, what leaves me energized to do more of the same day after day. And I focus my self-improvement energies there, which means I get rewarded for doing the work because I enjoy what I’m doing, and growing my proficiency with practice and effort means I feel more confident every time I lean in. 

ORGANIZE LITTLE BY LITTLE 

I’m someone who can easily get overwhelmed when I let my physical space obey entropy and become a landing site for random kids’ toys, clothes that haven’t been put away, odds and ends tucked into every crevice. I have been truly amazed at the amount of calm and order it brings to my day to do three small things regularly.

First, every night before bed, I make my list of what I need to do the next day. This gives me a game plan that lets me actually fall asleep without fitfully worrying I’ve forgotten something, and I wake up with goals and structure already in mind so I can efficiently tackle what’s on my plate. I still might not get to everything, but I get to a hell of a lot more than I would otherwise. 

Second, I don’t look at my phone for the first or the last 30 minutes of my day. I don’t have set rules for how I spend this time, but it is mine to spend how I want! I try to devote some of it to organizing, and I am always surprised at what 10-minute efficient spurts can accomplish. This has the added benefit of making it impossible for me to fall into a midnight TikTok wormhole.

Third, as often as you feel overwhelmed by having things for which you don’t have a place, that you never use, or that don’t serve you, donate, sell or otherwise get rid of them! Just like your time, your space is finite. You have to make room for the things you really want in your life, and creating this space also lets you better see, value, and emphasize the things that do bring you joy! I have found these simple practices to be so mentally and physically freeing.

MAKE HEALTH AN EASY (AND DELICIOUS!) HABIT 

Obviously, I love to cook, and playing in the kitchen making meals that delight and nourish my family and loved ones is a way that I bring so much adventure and fun into my days. It’s important to me that we never see health as deprivation. It should be as delicious and pleasurable as our indulgent meals knowing we’re doing something amazing for ourselves, too. 

I have seen firsthand how our energy, mood, clarity, and fitness are all determined by what we eat, so I invest in that vitality three times a day—indulging is investing, too because it fuels my resolve to eat well and because great bites are life highlights for me! STAY CURIOUS AND PRESENT 

There are never enough hours in the day. I feel like I am always running down the clock and parenting is an exercise in shedding expectations, riding the unpredictability, learning as you go, and enjoying so much sweetness in the mess! The more I can stay present in each experience, the more I get out of them and the less I worry. As my mom wisely says, “worrying is just a prayer for the worst possible outcome.” 

My kids keep me guessing every day, and I am so grateful to get to experience life alongside them, trying to answer their many, many questions and a few of my own along the way. If motherhood has taught me anything, it’s how to be totally ok learning as I go. When I let it, it makes me feel like a kid again.
