How to Craft a TikTok Résumé (and Why You Need One)

For so long we have been told social media needs to be “toned down” in order to get a professional career. 

I disagree. Social media is now a way to express our strengths, show our personalities, and pitch ourselves. By using new and inventive ways like TikTok résumés to get a company’s attention, we are able to break into spaces like never before. Gone are the days of submitting a résumé to an open position and hoping for the best. The job market is extremely competitive and social media is a great tool to attract recruiters and hiring managers to increase your chances of landing your dream job.

So I bet you’re wondering, what is a TikTok résumé and how do I create one? TikTok is a platform that allows users to go viral, regardless of follower count, and reach a large audience with a quick video upload. With video content on the rise, it only makes sense to take advantage and use social media as a way to market your skills to employers.

Here are three steps to creating a TikTok résumé that will target your dream companies.

Step One

Make sure you have a public TikTok account and treat this video like it is your about-me pitch. Do not share personal information, instead, share your interests, achievements, skills, and strengths. 

Start by stating your name, your degree and/or training certifications, and your greatest professional strength. Continue by addressing why the person watching this should hire you and express what tangible skills you have that make you an asset to any team. 

Finish the video by stating your ultimate career goal, making sure this goal aligns with the goals of the companies you are targeting. 

Step Two

Directly call out the companies you want to target. You can do this by @ing the company’s TikTok profile in the caption. The more specific and detailed you are with your video pitch the better chance you have of it reaching the right audience. 

You can even create multiple videos, each one acting as its own résumé pitch for a specific job. Treat this video as if you are just having a conversation within an interview setting. Figure out what matters most to the hiring team based on the job description and make note of the words or skills that are mentioned most often. Use these keywords in your video to craft a tailored pitch and attract the eyes of recruiters. 

Step Three 

Have fun with it! Inject your personality into your video and make sure it represents your true self. This is an opportunity for you to show a different side to yourself rather than let a piece of paper speak for you. To showcase your experience and background information you can even include charts or infographics that show proven success in your field. 

Remember, even though this is a less informal way to pitch yourself, it still needs to show professionalism. Dress like you would for an interview, speak clearly, record as many takes as necessary, and enjoy yourself!

End your TikTok résumé video with a compelling call to action. Reiterate your interest in the company or position, provide your timeline for a start date, and include a way to get in touch with you, preferably by showing your professional email.
