FROM winning hearts ON DANCING WITH THE STARS TO building a life THAT BALANCES MOTHERHOOD, MARRIAGE, TOURING, AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP,
The Emmy-nominated dancer first fell in love with performing as a teenager. At the time, she had big Hollywood dreams and no clear roadmap, but plenty of determination.
Now, after completing a grueling 97-show tour while raising her son and continuing to expand her brand beyond the ballroom, Johnson is stepping into an exciting new era defined by authenticity, ambition, and joy. Whether she’s lighting up the dance floor, embracing postpartum life with honesty, or dreaming about Broadway and hosting gigs, she brings the same energy to everything she does: genuine, resilient, and completely magnetic. Read more about Jenna’s journey in the C&C 100 interview below.
Jenna Johnson Chmerkovskiy IS PROOF THAT passion AND perseverance CAN coexist beautifully.
When did you discover that dance was a passion you wanted to pursue as a career, and did your family and peers encourage you to take this path?
I remember as early as 15 I was incredibly passionate about dance and knew it was what I wanted to pursue. My parents thought I was a little crazy because at the time there was no “blueprint” on how to become a successful dancer in Hollywood. With no knowledge of how I was going to chase this dream, my parents never turned down my aspirations and fully supported me every step of the way. I’m so grateful they believed in me.. because it ultimately led me to where I am today!
On Dancing With The Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, You’ve partnered with celebrities from wildly different backgrounds. What’s your approach to building trust quickly?
It is one of my favorite things to gain the trust and respect of somebody new. Our work can be quite intimate and personal, so my goal is to be as transparent as possible so whoever I’m partnered with feels like I have their back on the dance floor. I tend to be an open book regardless and I think that helps break the ice immediately.
What does your mental routine look like during a high-stakes competition week?
OMG. You should ask my husband who is on the receiving end of my emotional breakdowns lol. I think I tend to overthink every little detail because I care tremendously. I’ve gotten better over the years but thank goodness for my supportive husband, sisters, and parents who always know how to keep my spirits high.
You’ve built a strong personal brand beyond dancing on television. How intentional have you been about that expansion?
I really value how I represent myself and how I show up. It means a lot to me. Whether it’s my style, my fitness routine, or how I mother, I want it to be authentic and real! I’m really grateful for my team who has understood that and pushed me in the brand space and only taken on things that feel like me.
“I’m so grateful they believed in me.. because it ultimately led me to where I am today!”
Returning to a physically demanding career after childbirth is no small feat. What did that transition look like for you?
I am very grateful that at the time I didn’t put any pressure on myself to “bounce back”. I wanted to revel in the postpartum of it all and just enjoy my brand new baby. I really feel like once I started dancing again, my body fell back into place. Obviously I was consistent in the gym but I really felt like it was muscle memory with how my body transformed once I added movement & dancing into my routine again.
How do you balance being a wife, mom, dancer, TV star, and writer without burning out?
It’s a constant juggle! I have a great support system and I honestly show up better in all aspects of life since becoming a mom. I know my limits and my boundaries but I also love for my son to watch me work! I think it’s important for him to see his mama passionate, hard working, and willing to make sacrifices for what she wants to achieve! Don’t get me wrong, and you can ask my team, but sometimes I fall short trying to balance it all. And that’s ok.
What’s a recent moment you’re especially proud of—and why?
Finishing a 97 show tour in a 111 days! While being a mom, business baddie, and wifey :)
What does a “reset” day look like for you when you’re not in rehearsal mode?
I love to decompress with a contrast therapy day. Sauna and cold plunging have become a sacred ritual for my physical and mental health. I love eating good food!! If I have time, reading a couple chapters of my fav romance novel. And definitely ending the night with dessert and cuddles watching a movie!
You’ve accomplished so much already in your career. What’s a dream that’s still on your vision board?
BROADWAY. Hosting. Winning an Emmy! Sports Illustrated.
