Pinky Cole on the Keys To Expanding Your Brand Rapidly—Without Losing Its Identity

Pinky Cole is an unstoppable force in the food industry. Since launching Slutty Vegan, a plant-based fast-food restaurant chain, in 2018, she’s been on a mission to make vegan food more accessible, affordable, and approachable. Already one of the foremost restaurateurs in the South, the Atlanta-based entrepreneur now has her eyes set on expansion outside the region.

Her passion to create a vegan restaurant that was not just for vegans, but for everyone who wanted a delicious, plant-based meal has paid off. Slutty Vegan is currently valued at $100 million, and Cole is opening 20 more locations after a successful Series A funding round.

The chain has become so popular that Cole was recently featured on the cover of Forbes magazine and included in the Create Cultivate 100 List for 2023. Below, she shares how she’s managed to grow her business so fast, without watering down what Slutty Vegan is at its core: a vegan restaurant that’s not just for vegans, but for everyone who wants a delicious, plant-based meal. Plus, her go-to SV order, and the best advice she has for entrepreneurs looking to scale multiple projects at once.

If feels like Slutty Vegan isn’t just hitting its stride—it’s full on sprinting—when it comes to scaling the business. How are you maintaining your brand identity in the face of such fast-pace growth?

I don't do anything without having fun. I’m very intentional about doing the things that I want to do. No one can force or persuade me to do anything that makes me uncomfortable. I must feel it within my spirit. It must be fun for me. Being able to scale this business is fun, but work. I’m passionate about what I want to do and must always remain consistent in my movements. 

Our community includes women at different entrepreneurial stages with various interests. Can you share your best advice on growing multiple projects linearly and outwardly at the same time?

Teams are the most important thing when growing businesses. You must have the right aces in places. I didn't always have that. I realized that you must have people that get it, have the experience and expertise, and the level of consistency. That's how I’m able to grow. I’m using my mind to diversify the businesses, but the people in those spaces run the company, and I oversee them. 

What is your go to Slutty Vegan order?

You just hosted a wedding at your restaurant and officiated it! What inspired you to do this?

I thought, how cool would it be to have a wedding at an iconic location, a world-famous restaurant? We were lucky to find two amazing people who wanted to get married at our store, a landmark in Atlanta. We invited the world to participate via Instagram. I’m happy because it will forever go down in history. They made history and didn't realize it. What a dope way to market the brand. 

What people may or may not realize about you is that, in addition to being a restaurateur, you’re also a passionate advocate for social justice through the Pinky Cole Foundation. Can you tell us more about your work there?

I started the Pinky Cole Foundation in 2019. It was a way for me to bridge the generational wealth gap. I like to help people. It's not just community service; I like to see other people win. So building the foundation was the formal way to do that. We’ve done a lot since launching—we've given money, donated fruits and vegetables to those in need, given salaries, purchased cars, given students LLCs, and so on. That is what is most rewarding to me. The restaurant is fun, and seeing people happy is fun. What gets me going is knowing that people can execute their dreams and win by way of the foundation.

Amy Liu Shares Her Playbook for Using What You Learn as an Employee To Become an Entrepreneur

Even though Amy Liu was co-president of the Entrepreneurship Venture Management Association in business school, she wasn't totally convinced her post-grad career plans would include adding "founder" to her CV. "I've had a really linear path," says Liu. "I went to business school, I worked in the beauty industry, and I worked my way up. I just kept telling myself I'm going to learn on someone else's dime, and I'm going to get really good."

And that she did. Liu's time as a marketing executive for beauty brands like Smashbox and Kate Somerville built up the knowledge and experience she needed to finally launch her own beloved makeup brand, Tower 28, and helped make the learning curve of going from an employee to an entrepreneur less steep for her.

Having always felt that founders were typically authorities in their field—professional makeup artists or skincare experts, Liu initially didn’t believe she belonged in the same cohort of women who were building disruptive beauty brands, seemingly singlehandedly, because her experience was in working for others. Not to mention, she had kids and a mortgage to think about, which made the decision to start a business even scarier.

But after a meeting with a friend from business school 15 years into her career, Liu finally was convinced that her experience in the corporate world would be instrumental in preparing her for entrepreneurship. "I gained a lot of skills in terms of understanding what it's like to be an employee," she said on this week's episode of WorkParty. This epiphany led to a core lesson in Liu's playbook: Never underestimate the power of experience—no matter the industry.

Liu suggests taking stock of your background and identifying transferable skills that will be valuable in your new venture. If you work in marketing, you likely have know-how in branding, advertising, and customer acquisition. As an employee you likely built up a network of contacts in your industry. These contacts can be valuable resources when starting your own business. (Liu's co-president from the aforementioned Entrepreneurship Venture Management Association was Tower 28's very first investor!)

Liu also emphasizes the importance of being adaptable and willing to learn. As an employee, you likely had a set of defined responsibilities and tasks. As an entrepreneur, you will need to be comfortable with uncertainty and change, try new approaches, and pivot when necessary. In fact, the most successful entrepreneurs tend to be middle-aged, according to a study of 2.7 million startups.

She’s a co-founder of Girls That Invest, a brand that empowers young women to take control of their financial future. Her podcast of the same name ended 2022 in the top one percent of the most-shared shows on Spotify globally.

A strong advocate for financial literacy, Kaur has dedicated her time to educating thousands of young women on how to make smart financial decisions, including speaking at universities and other institutions across the globe.

Through her organization, Kaur’s created a platform to provide education, mentorship, and resources to young women who want to become investment professionals, and she even teaches a six-week masterclass on investing, From A–Z in The Stock Market.

Below, Kaur talks about what she wishes she’d learned about investing when she was growing up, what’s next for Girls That Invest, and which of member of the Kardashian-Jenner fam is her ideal podcast guest.

For people who may not be familiar with your work, can you explain what it is you do through Girls That Invest

I break down the jargon associated with investing—What's a fund, a stock? How do you even get started? It's so rewarding seeing people having that "ah-ha" moment. We've hosted workshops at Shopify, Oracle, Salesforce, and HSBC, as well as in-person events in the UK, U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

What made you want to start your business?

Growing up, there was no representation when it came to investing education. I didn't feel like it was something that was for me. When I looked at investors, even a Google search showed men in suits looking across multiple screens. In-person events didn't feel inviting either. I wished there was a space where I could talk about investing that felt welcoming, and thus Girls That Invest was born.

Despite the number of female investors increasing in recent years, women still invest at lower rates than men right now. What do you think it’ll take to get to a point of parity?

I truly think the answer lies in representation. You cannot become what you cannot see. More women talking about money or investing is going to encourage more women to come into the door. It feels less intimidating when you know people who look like you can break down the jargon in ways you understand—without being patronizing. It's about using language and a female-lens that makes it frankly just a wee bit more fun and engaging.

You’ve been asked to speak at the House of Parliament in London on International ‘Women’s Day on March 8. Why are opportunities like this important to you and your overall goals when it comes to achieving more equity in investing?

It's so exciting being able to occupy spaces such as the House of Parliament in the UK, earlier in 2023 I was invited by the High Commission of India to speak about the work of Girls That Invest and the impact we were having. It absolutely ties into our goal of getting into more spaces where women can see people like them talking about money. 

The opportunity to make an impact beyond communities and right into the heart of policy and government is a fantastic place to be, and I'm so excited for what the future holds. Being able to rub shoulders with industry and political leaders wasn't something I imagined our brand to do, but if it helps get the mission across, I'm there!

You host and run the world’s largest investing education podcast for women. Who is a dream podcast guest that you haven’t had on your show yet, but want to interview?

Kris Jenner. No one, and I mean no one, knows more about personal finance than a woman who was able to turn a six-child household that was struggling to pay private school bills into a billion-dollar empire.

How To Set (And Keep) Boundaries as a Newly-Minted Solopreneur

When I first shifted my career from working as a civil litigator to running my own public relations agency, I struggled with setting boundaries. Answering texts from clients on evenings and weekends became the norm, and I stopped everything to answer an email from a client—no matter what time of day. I needed to create a vision for my life and business—and make a concerted effort to protect my time.

I know from experience that it can be tough to set boundaries with your clients, especially if you already have a working relationship with them. So here are my top tips for drawing those much-needed lines in the sand—no matter where you are with your clients in your journey as a solopreneur.

1. Set a precedent right from the start

You don’t have to exhaust yourself as an entrepreneur. Newer business owners feel they need to earn the ability to set boundaries, but that’s not the case. You created this business for yourself, right? That means you can make it look however you want for yourself, including client boundaries. 

Realize that you deserve to create your business like this from the get-go. You shouldn’t feel the need to instantly reply to every client communication or stay at your computer at all hours of the night. Entrepreneurship doesn’t have to be that way for you to be successful. In fact, it’s a recipe for burnout.

2. Shift your mindset and your availability

Many new solopreneurs struggle to set boundaries because they believe they have to be on 24/7 for the sake of their clients. This is a misconception and a bad mindset to be in when kicking off your business. 

You don’t have to be accessible at all times to be a good service provider. When you have boundaries in place, clients respect your availability (as long as you’re getting the work done). They’ll see you crushing it during your available hours and will trust that if anything comes up after hours, you’ll get back to them right away the next morning.

3. Vacation is still vacation—even if you work for yourself

Taking time off is always okay. As long as the work gets done, it should not matter—barring the rare work emergency, of course! 

Make sure you convey your available hours to your client in what you say and do. Don't send a proposal or work-related emails after hours or while you're supposed to be OOO. Doing so sets the expectation that you’re working and accessible around the clock, and clients can easily take advantage of that. 

It’s all about the follow-through here. You have to exemplify your boundaries, not just have them in your head or mention them to your clients. 

4. Be ready to speak up for yourself

If you have a client with a habit of sending last-minute asks and after-hours messages, you must correct the course. If it doesn’t get better when you work on it, know that it’ll probably never get better, and you might need to part ways with the client. 

Don’t be intimidated to say something to your client when the last-minute asks are becoming too much and your client's boundaries are being crossed. Your relationship with them should be mutually respectful. You’re running a business just like they are.

5 Rules Every New Founder Should Follow, According to the Co-Founders of Obé

There are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to entrepreneurship. But there are industry pros who’ve learned a thing or two about what not to do in business, including Mark Mullett and Ashley Mills, co-founders behind the on-demand fitness platform obé

At Create & Cultivate’s Wellness Means Business summit a few weeks ago, Mullett and Mills, who earned $15 million in their series A funding and have captured the hearts of countless fitness fanatics, listed out a few learning lessons about finding an idea, surrounding yourself with the right people, and staying inspired as your business grows. So if you’re looking for a few “don’ts” to keep in your back pocket as you navigate new entrepreneurship, keep scrolling. 

1. Don’t fool yourself

Before committing to a business, Mills and Mullett want you to ask yourself: Is it a hobby, a trend, or a passion? Here’s an example. Maybe you’re big on knitting and love celery juice. That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to start a juice-drinking knitting business. A passion, Mullett says, is something that keeps you up at night and something you’re uniquely qualified to create.

“If it's a passion, that's going to help you out when you're working 25 hours a day, eight days a week, 366 days a year,” says Mullett. “If it's a passion, that will carry us through. Fitness, connection, community, and working with each other have been a passion of ours. And that's carried us through a lot of high highs and a lot of low lows over five years.” So ask yourself: What am I truly passionate about?

2. Don’t be a copycat

Referencing a book called Blue Ocean Strategy by Renée Mauborgne and W. Chan Kim, Mills says that saturated markets are like shark-infested waters. The trick is to find the patch of blue ocean that’s shark-free and made for your talents. “Once you do that, you can identify your audience and a different strategy so [that]  you can attract other folks—and you can probably do it more efficiently if you continue to scale your business,” says Mills. 

For example, she says, Obé’s “ blue ocean” was creating an online fitness platform that emulated the fun, community-oriented feeling of hitting a boutique fitness class in a major city. So think about what your business’ “blue ocean” looks like—and steer your ship there. 

3. Don’t journey alone

“It is so important to find yourself a partner, a co-founder, an investor, an advisor—someone who you can trust and who share the same vision as you,” says Mullett. “For Ashley and I, being together in this journey has been probably the most rewarding part. In the low moments, you want to lift each other up, and in the high moments, you want to hug and celebrate and press forward.” Even if you’re currently acting as CEO, CMO, and CFO of your company, make a point of finding a community that lifts you up. 

4. Don’t fall in love with everyone you meet

So you finally have the funds to hire some help. Maybe it’s a copywriter. A graphic designer. A CMO. Whatever the position is, Mills says to take your sweet time finding someone who’s the right fit. (No matter how much you needed help, like, yesterday.) 

“We love people; we love to meet people. But what you have to really understand is: What is the role that you're hiring this person to do? What is the skill set and background that they need to do it?” says Mills. Think critically about your ideal candidate for this position, and don’t stop interviewing until you find them. 

5. Don’t psych yourself out

“You’re working on a business where you’re the only employee; you're white-knuckling it half the time. We all know that feeling of being on a roller coaster and feeling like you might be crashing. But here's what we learned: A timeout is stronger than you think,” says Mullett. All founders have doubts, but the key—according to Mills and Mullett—is to take a break when they arise. Then, get back to work.

“Find people you trust and allow them to help you. One of the biggest barriers to growth is controlling everything yourself. Instead, view your time as a limited resource, and allow others to help you.”

“Being less-than-great at things is inevitable when you’re living on your growth edge. If you’re challenging yourself and struggling, you may find that your typical go-tos are frustration and self-flagellation. How One PR Agency Founder Uses Mentorship Tactics To Get the Best Results for Her Clients

Working in public relations has been one of the most fulfilling experiences for me. I started my career almost 11 years ago, and I have to say, I’m not the same person I was back then. Not only have I grown as an individual, but also as a business entrepreneur, picking up knowledge along the way.

In the first eight years of my career, I worked for a notable PR agency based out of New York City. It was there that I was inspired to launch my own agency, as my passion for helping and amplifying small businesses, specifically BIPOC-owned ones, grew. I saw the need for these businesses to get as much help and attention as big corporate brands, so I ventured out to start The Bonita Project and do that. 

As I slowly built my client roster, I had the pleasure to work with some of today's most popular Latinx- and Black-owned brands, such as Alamar Cosmetics, Second Wind, Pholk Beauty, Valdé Beauty, and many more. My role as a business entrepreneur and a PR consultant turned me into a mentor of sorts, and I now mentor clients and service their PR needs, while stimulating their growth as individuals and fellow business owners. Here are some of the tactics I used to help my clients achieve success in their own journey.

1. Set shared goals

Upon signing with a new client, set a list of business and personal goals. How do they want to grow their business exposure? How about their mission and image as a new business owner? Let them share their dreams (even if they may seem sky high). Let’s face it, we all have these ambitious dreams for ourselves. 

I always ask new clients what brands they aspire to be like. Who do they follow closely on social media, and what public figure do they see as a role model? We then work on a list of shared goals together, followed by a PR strategy! 

2. Listen and support 

Always lend an ear when they have a question or need advice on something, even if it's not entirely PR related. While we know "time is money," my relationship with my clients isn't always transactional. As a small business owner, I want to make sure they can confide in me and share their ups and downs, and even their work struggles. We usually come to a resolution together, while talking through their feelings.

3. Be their number one cheerleader 

Root for them and share words of encouragement, whether it’s a comment on their social media or a quick text after they’ve finished an interview. There have been many times when clients wrap up an interview, and tell me they did horribly or didn’t feel as confident. Boost their confidence by showing them that you care and plug in some tips for improvement if needed. There is always room for improvement, and our small business clients recognize that. 

4. Set them up for success 

This brings me to my next point. You always want to come prepared and ensure you’re setting your client up for success, while clearing their head of any doubts. You can boost their confidence with media training or practice sessions on how they should handle a press interview. Let the client take notes and you’ll see them improve each time.

5. Challenge them to step out of their comfort zone 

If there's something about me, I constantly challenge our clients with perspective. As the PR and marketing industry continues to evolve, so does today's consumer. And while some brands may be stuck on doing things the traditional way, I usually come in and challenge the client to stir things up a bit. 

My team and I introduce creative ideas, and new influencers and voices to partner with, but sometimes brands will think it's a bit too risky or "not on brand." I usually believe otherwise and give them more context as to why this idea would make sense. Apply the “it doesn't hurt if you don't try it" mentality, and they’ll see the growth. All it takes is being confident in your ideas. You're the expert and more tapped into the industry than the client. 

6. Keep it real 

There will be times when the client says or proposes an idea that doesn’t sit well with you, whether it goes against your values or you don’t think it’ll be well received. Keep it real and tell them what you are thinking. Keeping it real from the beginning will help the bond between you both go further, and grow stronger.

Doing Too Much Led To Work Exhaustion- Here's How I Bounced Back

As an entrepreneur, it’s easy to feel like you need to be doing it all, and all the time. However, this mindset has the potential to put you on the fast track to work exhaustion- aka burnout!

If you’re currently in the midst of burnout or feel like you’re on your way there yourself, know that there's hope for recovery and avoidance altogether. We spoke with 15, high-achieving women who’ve experienced burnout as a result of doing too much all at once. Luckily for them (and for you), they’ve since bounced back by implementing more sustainable strategies to ensure they are thriving both personally and professionally.

You are capable of doing a lot, but you don’t always have to be doing everything. Take the advice from these successful entrepreneurs.

Katie Ward

Owner of Katie Ward Photography, a brand, editorial, and portrait photographer based in NYC and the Hamptons. 

My experience: I experienced severe burnout at the end of 2021. I am the primary parent and primary earner in my household and I had been exclusively pumping for a baby, spending three hours a day driving my older child to and from school, as well as working more than full-time. I ended up having to dip into savings to take two months off to get back to baseline, sleep, and figure out my priorities. The biggest strategy I employed was to significantly raise the prices of my offerings. Doing so enabled me to work 25 to 50 percent less, while still being able to support my family both financially and emotionally.

My advice: Sometimes there is no avoiding burnout, especially with the unrealistic expectations that society has placed on everyone, but more specifically on working moms. But there are tools we can use to get through it. Focusing on getting enough sleep, eating regularly, and finally getting a therapist who I felt comfortable opening up to helped me a lot.

Ashita Shah

My experience: Burnout is real. With kids and an active social life with work dinners and friends, it was like the hamster wheel with no end in sight. Outsourcing and hiring a good reliable team for me was worth the weight in gold, from managing life at work to managing the home and the kids. Time management and planning have also been extremely helpful. With a monthly brain dump and a short daily list of goals, it allows me to get to the finish line in smaller chunks versus being overwhelmed by it all. 

My advice: Hire. I can't tell you how much sanity and peace of mind this will bring to you. Hire to manage all the things you can't do—from filing papers, to creating and managing schedules for home and personal life, to answering general emails—so you can focus truly on what you can do. Hiring a few great individuals is all it takes to stay ahead of the curve and not feel like you are gasping for air. 

Dorothy Kolb

My experience: Because I'm in the service space as a fractional CFO, I'm always working for others. I pride myself on my bespoke offerings but it has also, on occasion, left me feeling unsupported, tapped out, and burnt. As a single mom of four, I also need to be fully myself for my sons. Burnout has manifested itself in me feeling empty, crushed, and useless. I have built up a network of colleagues, experts, and allies who I can rely on not only for referrals but for help. Referring along parts of work not only allows me to source the best for my clients but allows me to take a break knowing my clients are in amazing hands.

My advice: It's so important to have a bunch of resources. Now and then you just need to refer out some work to someone you fully trust so that you can regroup. Trust me, it pays itself back in multiples. 

Rossalvi Marte

My experience: ​​The first time I experienced burnout was in my corporate career. This was a mental burnout since I’m a mom of two toddlers and I did not have time for anything after work. I would bathe and feed my kids quickly so that they could be in bed as soon as possible. After starting my business, I experienced burnout again because I said yes too many times when I should have said no. What helped me the most was working with a naturopathic doctor and life coach at the same time. Making time for self-care is also now a non-negotiable for me.

My advice: Spend time thinking about what drains your energy and what boundaries you need to start implementing in your life today. Block time on the calendar for true self-care and commit to it. 

Mellinda Abbott

My experience: I would say I was a member of the “I can do it all” club until my late 40s when divorce and a health scare forced me to stop and evaluate. I learned to be sure that each day I focus on the things that are meaningful to me—the ones that put a smile on my face and feel good. 

My advice: Pause, sit with yourself, and identify what is important to you. If you are not healthy and happy, no one else in your life will be either.

Shay Paresh

My experience: I’ve had several burnout moments throughout my career because I overextended myself. It’s important to re-evaluate your priorities and learn to set boundaries. Learn to say “no” more often. Saying no allows you to say “yes” to the commitments you want to make!

My advice: Set aside time to disconnect and participate in an activity you truly enjoy, such as attending your favorite workout class or connecting with a community that is personally meaningful to you. It’s vital to surround yourself with the right people, personally and professionally. 

Ashley Rector

My experience: Burnout is very real and very scary. I was a practicing attorney for several years while simultaneously running a side hustle focused on building authentic communities. I thought I could do it all and that I had no boundaries. I hit a breaking point where I mentally collapsed and couldn't handle it anymore. I had to take a step back, identify the things that brought me joy, and evaluate how I was spending my time on a day-to-day basis.

My advice: We are a sum of all of our small actions. When you start to skip things that fill up your bucket here and there, you don't realize that those actions of putting yourself last add up tremendously. So don't skip the morning indulgent coffee, the 10 minutes in the park with sunshine on your face, or the manicure.

Carlye Morgan

My experience: Growing up, I was told that women could have it all—they could have a career and a family and life could be wonderful. But in reality, I found that balancing a career and a family was incredibly challenging. Around the time my daughter was four years old, the long hours, stress, and politics at my corporate job began to take a toll on me emotionally and physically. Since many factors in my work environment were completely out of my control, I decided to take control of my own destiny and walk away, which was one of the hardest decisions of my life. But once the weight of my stressful job was lifted, I was able to get back to myself and reinvent my career on my own terms as an entrepreneur. Granted, it was a very risky thing to do. But sometimes, you have to take a great risk to get a great reward. I have not regretted it for a moment and in hindsight, I just wish I had done it sooner!

My advice: It’s incredibly hard to do the same thing for many years, feeling like a hamster on a wheel. I would recommend attempting to make a lateral move to a different position within your company. I did that successfully for years and it helped keep things fresh and interesting. 

Belma McCaffrey

CEO of Work Bigger, a career coaching platform for high achievers who want to find their purpose. 

My experience: One of my most significant burnout experiences happened when I was working full-time at the largest news organization in the world. At the same time, I had my first son and was working to launch my first coaching business. I was trying to "have it all"—the success, the family, and the business. I didn't know it at the time, but my self-worth was based on my level of success and achievement. It was this harmful belief that led to my burnout. My No. 1 strategy was to take a pause and rest, and work on my self-worth and my confidence. 

My advice: Understand where your burnout is coming from. One place to start is by identifying your emotional triggers. Emotional triggers are events or experiences that trigger a negative emotional response. These can show you what you need to heal so that you can learn to work from a healthier place. You can learn to set boundaries and say no, which is critical for getting your power back.

Jenna Sereni

CEO and Founder of HandsDown, the shopping platform built for communities and friends.

My experience: Burnout is so very real, and especially as a parent and a founder, there is so much to juggle in the pressure cooker that is this career. That said, after 15 years I think I’ve finally unlocked my escape when it comes to burnout. If you’re going to be taking on a big job, an exceptional challenge at work, or a new project, first check in with yourself and think about the balance you’ve been able to create as it relates to your personal self-care. What brings you peace? What makes you feel at ease? For me, it’s a 30-minute daily morning workout, short meditation, and monthly mani-pedi. My No. 1 priority when setting up my day, my travel schedule, and my personal vacation schedule? It all revolves around my self-care needs. Because ultimately, if I don’t take care of myself, we’re at risk of it all unraveling.

My advice: Find what brings you peace and makes you feel at ease, and make that a priority. I promise, carving out that small amount of time will be worth the effort in setting up the habit. Two helpful resources are Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty and Atomic Habits by James Clear. Read these two books and you’ll be on your way to a lifestyle that prioritizes your personal health, setting you up to crush it in your professional one.

Michelle Glauser

Founder and CEO of Techtonica, a nonprofit that helps women and non-binary adults with low incomes overcome barriers to entering tech careers.

My experience: As someone who founded an intensive tech education nonprofit and managed it while working another full-time job, I have both personally been affected by burnout and advised many people dealing with it. Even during the toughest times, I make sure to get enough sleep and regular exercise, because no combination of other things can make up for the foundation sleep and exercise provide. I also found that identifying the feelings I have and sharing them—whether with a friend or in my journal—helps me process and move on. When you care so much about the work you do, you have to remember that your value isn’t defined by your level of productivity. Be intentional, consistent, and unapologetic about taking time to recharge.

My advice: When you feel the most overwhelmed and in danger of complete burnout, it usually feels like the worst time to take a break, but it’s the most essential time to take a break. I recommend everyone use a trauma-informed tool we recently implemented at Techtonica called a WRAP, or Wellness Recovery Action Plan—create, share, and stick to a personal doc that lists what you will do regularly to maintain wellness, what triggers a stress response for you, signs that you are overwhelmed, and what you will do to recover. 

Felicia Kashevaroff

My experience: My experience with burnout came during my years as a stay-at-home mom. Since I wasn't "working," I felt compelled to prove my worth by joining every committee and acting as room mom for all three of my children's classrooms. I planned fundraisers and sat on nonprofit boards—important work, but did I need to do it all? My partner couldn't understand that these responsibilities, combined with the mental load I was carrying at home, were simply too much. Ultimately, his refusal to value my time and contributions forced me to do it myself. I learned to say no more often and started exploring the meaning of equitable partnership.

My advice: My most meaningful advice is to value your time. It's your most precious resource. Say no without guilt and call on your friends, family, and your partner if you have one to support you when you feel burned out, or feel burnout approaching.

Emily McDonald

Co-Founder of My Founder Circle, a community for early-stage female founders to help them launch and scale their companies.

My experience: I faced major burnout with my first start-up, The Stylist LA. I was working more than 80 hours per week, raising investment, and ran a large team. I always put myself last. These factors resulted in massive burnout. I realized I needed to put my needs first. I needed to prioritize sleep, exercise, and healthy eating, which in turn made my work even better. Working 80-hour weeks wasn't helpful in the long run, even though it felt like it at the time. Putting myself and my mental health first is ultimately so much more productive for my business.

My advice: Remember to give yourself grace. Find a confidante, a therapist, or a business coach who you can be 100 percent honest with. Open up to them about how you are feeling and have them assist with strategies to get through it. Take a step back and give yourself space from the office, from your work, or whatever you may need. Try and move your body, get some sleep, and put your phone down. All of these things help when going through burnout––but they also help in avoiding burnout. Remember: there is so much more to life than work, even though it's hard to see when you are in it.

Marika Adamopoulos

Founder of Marika Creative, an agency specializing in stunning visual experiences, boldly and strategically supporting global businesses to increase their revenue.

My experience: As both a creative and an entrepreneur, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that burnout is a familiar place for me. Especially when I was first getting my business off the ground, I was working eight days a week, 57 hours a day. I didn’t take a true vacation for three years, and, at one point, I was taking on up to 20 photo projects a month. This pattern and the stress it induced led to some pretty significant health challenges, bringing me to a place where I was forced to make some changes. 

My advice: Schedule your rest time and plan all your work-related tasks around your non-negotiable “you time.” Burnout is fairly easy to avoid if you set up a structure in your days, weeks, months, and years where you create the time you need to work through internal battles, lay on the couch and do nothing, lift at the gym, or whatever you need. As someone who’s experienced burnout many times, a big piece of overcoming it is realizing that it is okay to step away from your work, and to realize that you’ll be more successful and productive if you do step away for a time. Talking this through with a coach, therapist, or strong friend to help you get to that understanding internally can be really useful, and can then get you to the place you need to develop the rituals that will work best for you. 

Katherine Sprung

My experience: I've owned and operated Squish Marshmallows, a small-batch artisanal marshmallow and confections company, for eight years. When you're a sole owner of a bootstrapped business, you wear an incredible amount of hats, and you're working non-stop. After seven years of running the business, five of which I ran a brick-and-mortar retail shop with pop-ups and satellite locations, I was burning out quickly, especially going through the height of the pandemic. For me, the best way to give myself the freedom I needed and not completely run myself down, was to not renew my lease and close my brick and mortar, basically changing the model of my business.

My advice: Evaluate what you're doing, and where you're putting your time. For so long we've been told to "hustle," "no days off," and "sleep when you're dead." Those are all the things that are burning us out. My favorite mantra has always been to be the tortoise, not the hare. If you're driving yourself full force, not stopping, you're not only going to crash and burn, you're going to miss out on life. We often think that the business that we're in, or building, is the only thing that's happening and unless we're only sleeping three hours a night and working around the clock, nothing will get done. Sure, we could all use more hours in a day, but what we need to do is shift our mindset and give ourselves more grace. Slow down, work hard, but allow yourself room to breathe and live outside of your work.

5 Helpful Tips For Repurposing Your Content

Quantity or quality? It’s the age-old question, right? And when it comes to creating content, it’s incredibly relevant. As creators, we only have so many hours in a day … and it can be a challenge to decide how best to use those hours. If there’s one secret I’ve discovered to effectively walk the line between quantity and quality, it’s all about repurposing your content.

Don’t panic! I’m not advising you to churn out the same content over and over again. As a recipe developer, food blogger, podcaster, and cookbook author, I’ve been creating content for busy foodies for over ten years now. I’m confident to share some best practices for recycling the amazing work you’ve already done in new and creative ways to extend its life. I’m also here to tell you that I haven’t once — in a decade — heard a complaint from a reader or follower about repurposed content. Here's how I've done it!

1. Find new contexts for the same content. 

Evergreen content consists of information or ideas that you can use again and again. I’m sure, like me, you’ve already created and shared plenty of evergreen goodness with your audience, whether you know it or not. 

Take, for instance, a blog post I wrote years ago about how to cook frozen chicken breasts. Simply by finding a new context for the information, I’ve repurposed the work I did on this post again and again. National Chicken Cordon Bleu Day (It’s April 4, in case you were wondering.) is one example of a fresh hook for that post. I might also share it in the context of other chicken recipes that are trending on social media. 

2. Repurpose across platforms. 

Look for opportunities to bring the same content to your audiences in different ways. This is an efficient use of your time, but it also ensures that even more people will see your work since different segments of people are drawn to different platforms. Repurposing across various mediums has the added benefit of connecting you to a wider audience. 

I’ve found a lot of success with this method on one of my podcasts, Jump to Recipe. At the end of each episode, I share a weekly meal plan with my listeners. Guess where those meal plans come from? From my blog and website! I’ve already done the heavy lifting to thoughtfully develop the recipes in a written post, and on the show, my voice puts a new spin on them for people who prefer to consume audio content. Plus, with meal plans, I can mix and match individual recipes in different ways.

3. Edit the content based on what you know now.

Taking pretty, styled photos that will make a real impact on readers and followers can be seriously time-consuming. I have some good news for you: you don’t need to take brand new photos to brighten up your aesthetic and attract eyes. Since I’m constantly learning new photo editing skills, I’ll often repurpose old images from my hard drive with techniques I didn’t know when they were shot. 

You can use the same approach for written content. Reread old blog posts or social media captions and consider what you might add to them, based on more recent experiences or knowledge. Swapping in a fresh anecdote for an old intro might be all that you need to give an evergreen post new life.

4. Bring content back in smaller chunks. 

Short-form videos like TikToks and Instagram Reels are (obviously) a lot of fun, but they can also be used strategically for repurposing content. For instance, if I’ve created a full recipe video to walk audiences through every step of preparing a dish, I might break that same video into shorter chunks highlighting specific cooking techniques that my TikTok or Instagram followers can model.

The same principle can apply to written content. Do you have a longer blog post that’s had a lot of success and traction? Break it into shorter segments for Instagram captions. 

5. Use repurposed content to engage your audiences as part of an in-group.

As I already mentioned, I’ve never once received negative feedback from people after reposting a recipe, meal plan, or cooking technique. My followers seem to get excited to let me know when they’ve already tried something and can attest to how delicious it is. It makes them feel like they’re part of some kind of special club. 

If you share something other than recipes, your experience might not be the same, but there’s still a way to replicate it for different kinds of content. Are you repurposing advice on freelancing? Your long-term followers may want to share what’s already worked for them. Do you make content about DIY crafts? Let your audience get excited to see projects they’ve already made… with some of the minor tweaks I’ve suggested above, of course.

Here’s the bottom line. You work too hard on your high-quality content to let it live for only a short period. With a little bit of repurposing your content and some creativity, it becomes quantity!

5 Ways To Perfect Your Worry-Free Weekly “Reset” Routine

With Monday right around the corner, Sundays can make you feel like a mess. The pressures of
the coming week and the stress of the past are a perfect recipe for anxiety, dread, and overwhelm. Not to mention, the grief! I love weekends so I’m always a little sad come Sunday night. So when I find myself in this headspace, I seek refuge in my “reset routine.”

Setting time aside to replenish my energy and practice self-care helps me transition back into the week with ease. Protecting my energy is something I’ve struggled with in the past, and if that sounds like you here's what I did to achieve a worry-free weekly "reset" routine. The practices I share have helped me prioritize my well-being and joy, and are designed to help you pause and prepare. If that hasn’t been your experience with routines, don't worry. Here are 5 ways to create a realistic and resourcing “reset” routine to start the week right.

1. Cleanse your body

When we move from the brain we tend to forget the body. Physically cleansing is a way to reset the body and refresh your energy for the start of the week. Think of how you can bring extra intention to your cleansing routine. I like to take this time to style my hair the way I like or add a face massage to my skincare regimen.

Another way to “cleanse” your body is through hydration. I track my water intake with my gallon water bottle and complement that with some teas that bring me joy. Hot or cold teas are known to boost your immune system and fight off inflammation, so lately I’ve been enjoying a cup of warm tea with a squeeze of lemon, a spoonful of honey, ginger, and some goji berries.

2. Reset the mind

Between running a YouTube channel, podcast, and an online stationery shop, I'm no stranger to stress and overwhelm. When I struggle with insomnia or lack of motivation, I know it’s my body’s signal to take a step back and slow down. I’ve tried many mindfulness practices, but what works best for me is meditation. Anxiety starts in the mind, so learning to listen and observe my thoughts, as opposed to letting them take over control, has brought me a lot of relief. Meditation helps clear your mind, reset your mental slate and focus on your intentions. Try it for 15 minutes a week and see if it helps you too.

While meditation brings a gentle awareness to racing thoughts, affirmations introduce calming and empowering thoughts to the brain. Repeating statements like “I love myself. I trust myself. I am safe” bring me calm and support. Try a guided meditations when you are ready.

3. Plan the week ahead

Narrowing your focus is key to combating overwhelm and getting more done. Take a look at your upcoming week and take note of the events planned. Start by setting goals for the week and don’t forget to set some self-care ones as well. I like to make a list of three things for each category. This method keeps things achievable and helps me practice prioritizing. The Weekly Reset Planner uses the “list of three” template, which makes planning my week that much easier.


Next, I find reflecting on the past week helps me feel better prepared for the week to come. I take this time to practice gratitude and celebrate growth more regularly. No matter how small the achievement, it deserves to be celebrated. Reminding your nervous system of what you have survived helps relieve anxiety about the future. With time, this kind of practice can rewire your brain towards confidence and positivity instead of fear and self-criticism.

4. Clean your space

Tidying up is not everyone’s cup of tea and I get that. For some, it can feel like an impossible task. If this is the case for you, I have a 10-minute hack. Set a 10-minute timer and do some chores like folding laundry, doing the dishes, or sweeping. You can stop once your timer is up but you might find that once you get started you want to continue cleaning for longer.

This trick helps me combat procrastination and feel a sense of accomplishment. Your brain actually releases dopamine when you achieve goals, no matter how small they are! Also, a clean space promotes a clear mind. Not to mention that a small weekly dose of cleaning will give you less work later, and help you practice a healthy habit that will get easier over time.

5. Relax your body

In a culture that rewards “doing,” slowing down to honor “being” is a challenging task. Being with yourself, feeling into your body, and listening to your senses is vital to your wellbeing. Movement and breathing exercises are a great way to tend to your body and release trapped emotions. Tune inward and ask yourself “what areas hold the most tension in my body?” Stretching, breathing, and tapping are some of my go-to methods to release tension.

Other movement exercises to try are Belly Button Healing, which is a practice that stimulates digestive organs, promotes blood flow, and releases trapped emotions, and yoga is also a great way to slow down and heal your body’s aches and pains. I try to practice movement as much as possible to stay connected and fluid with my body. Above all, remember that the intention is decompression. Listen to the wisdom of your body and let yourself look silly.

I started RANAVAT with no connections in the beauty industry, driven solely by my passion and mission to see Indian beauty on the most coveted retail shelves in the world. It took a lot of no’s before there was a yes. But with that first yes slowly came more, and I was determined not to stop there.

There are 3 values that I hold dear to my professional (and personal) journeys, and most important in helping me get my product into the beauty aisles. Staying true to these values has never steered me wrong, even in the hardest of times, and relying on them in those hard times is what brings me up time and time again.

1. Find Your Niche

Find what speaks to your strengths. One lesson I’ve learned in this journey is to stay true to yourself. I knew my background was unique for the beauty industry. Having a business acumen and pairing that with ingredient sourcing and formulation experience, mixed with my South Asian identity, gave me the foundation to create and build RANAVAT.

Your identity is your strength. Use all of your experiences to create your space in this world.

2. Set an Example

Growing up in a South Asian household, my parents served as constant inspiration of the hard work and perseverance it takes to build a business. It’s incredibly empowering to see someone like you doing something you want to do, and watching my dad build a business from the basement of our home taught me the value of determination, self-belief, and passion.

I always knew from a young age that I wanted to, someday, start my own company too. Seeing our brand today at top retailers like Sephora and Harrods makes me hopeful for the next generation to be empowered to take on any challenge.

3. Create Your Network

Create and find your own network. I found my first mentors and advisors early on in building RANAVAT. They are my sounding board, my dose of reality, my inspiration, and an ear to listen to my struggles and my wins. I would not be where I am today without their support.

I also have an accountability group of close friends. We share our vision boards with each other in our respective fields, and we hold each other to those ideals. Regular check-ins allow me to not only connect with my friends and help them stay accountable to their visions, but stay accountable to my own visions.

Surround yourself with people who will champion you, challenge you, and support you every step of the way. They will be the ones who bring you up on those struggling days, who champion your wins louder and who provide advice on those difficult decisions.


Today, we are seeing more and more Asian-founded brands breaking norms in the beauty industry. I believe this is just the beginning of this movement. While my generation didn’t have the breadth of representation growing up, we were able to break into industries and challenge the norms.

Consumers crave connection and familiarity and are finding this in culturally driven brands like my own. I see my values represented in our customers and in fellow Asian founders and that gives me confidence that we will continue to see culturally driven beauty brands make their own space in the beauty industry.

3 Content Creators Share How To Land Partnerships With Brands You Love

Whether you’re exploring the world of being a content creator or you’re already committed to the journey, you’re likely aiming for dream partnerships with brands you love. But it's not all that easy to land them. 

Sure some partnerships are handed out easily, but how much do you believe in those brands? Are you even passionate about what they have to offer? Those are some questions you should be asking yourself before taking on a brand partnership. And if there's a brand you love, a little hard work on your end may just get you the deal.

Here are three content creators from different fields sharing their take on how to land partnerships with brands you love. They know the ropes of creating paid brand deals and they’re dishing it out just for you.

1. Grace Atwood, Lifestyle Content Creator

Gone are the days when creating a perfectly curated grid is the expectation. Most of us want to discover people who feel relatable and real, like Grace Atwood, a lifestyle content creator that has amassed 182,000 followers on Instagram alone by sharing her life and the things that she loves.

Back when Grace started her blog in 2010, it took three years until she landed her first partnership: a campaign with Ugg. “They had me judge a contest (where my blog readers would design and upload their Ugg boots), go to their studio to film a video, and do a couple blog posts. I think I was paid $300. It was so much work but I was over the moon excited. I saved half for taxes and spent the other half on nice sunglasses.” Grace may be landing partnerships with much higher brand investments now, but it took years to get her pricing just right.

Here’s her advice for new content creators: “Start by joining an affiliate platform like LTK or Shopstyle and watch the data like a hawk. The numbers will tell you what your audience likes ... Do more of whatever it is that works. Data is everything in this industry; it's not just about creating pretty photos and videos, you have to be able to back it up with numbers. Use the numbers to build case studies and create a media kit.”

2. Martina Bartolozzi, Travel Content Creator

Meet Martina Bartolozzi, an Italian-American content creator who helps foodies spend their money and time wisely when visiting Italy. She does this by creating custom Thatch maps with chosen recommendations based on personal preferences. It took a while for her to gain traction as she was exploring her niche, but once she found her path, it was only a few months until she received her first paid partnership request.

Martina has a few pointers that she hopes will help you land your first partnership:

  • Focus on building and maintaining a trusting community by offering tons of free, useful content consistently.

  • Keep learning! Continuously invest in developing your skills to be able to provide your best products and services.

  • Only pitch to and only accept collabs with brands that you believe in, and those that offer products and services that you would also use.

  • When pitching, do your research, be concise, and focus on explaining what advantages you can offer to the brand and how your interests are aligned.

  • You don’t wait to have “x” number of followers to start pitching, practice with smaller brands, or better yet, with businesses that already follow you.

3. Cahner Olson, Hyper-Local Content Creator in Omaha

Being a content creator can happen in your own backyard, as Cahner Olson of Omaha Places has proven in a very short amount of time. Omaha Places niche is super informative, engaging content that encourages Omaha residents to go out and explore their own city. 

Reflecting on the timeline of getting local brand deals in Omaha, Cahner approached collaborations for free products or services in her early days of having just 500 followers. Though it was a slow increase in the beginning, she eventually hit it big time.

“The first 6 months I didn't make any income from it. My first paid collab came at month six and was for $60. In month seven I made $140. Month eight was $150, and then month nine it started blowing up and I made ~$2,000. It's been a pretty upward trajectory from there. I was constantly reaching out to brands and pitching myself in the beginning, but as the account has grown and become more well-known in the community, companies are now coming to me first which is pretty cool.”

3 Lessons I Learned Throughout Entrepreneurship That Made the Biggest Difference

Like many things in life, being a business founder, business owner, business creator, whatever you want to call it, is hard. And I learned very quickly that the experience can be really hard on your mental health as well. I left the security and comfort of a consistent income, my potential career trajectory, and my 401(k) contributions to step out into the crazy world of business because I wanted to try to build something worthwhile. So many people questioned my decision to quit my job and thought that perhaps I was going through a phase, and honestly, sometimes so did I. Was I [sure I wanted to do this]?

In addition to dropping my job security, there was the burden and overwhelm of trying to figure out how to actually build my business, Clever Girl Finance, which sometimes felt like the burden of the entire world was on my shoulders. There were also the hideously depressing metrics about business startup failures, which were a constant reminder that I was most likely to fail even when I was making progress. And then there was my imposter syndrome that constantly had me questioning my abilities and doubting myself…

That being said, I’ve learned a few things on my journey that have allowed me to pursue my life as a business owner on my own terms. Things that in turn have helped me manage my mental and emotional health, as well as that annoying imposter syndrome. I want to share those things with you now.

1.  Don’t believe the work-life balance myth

Let’s start with the all-so-popular idea of work–life balance. Umm, yeah, that’s a lie. Work-life balance is a lie. There’s no balance. It’s called making it work, however you make it work. There’s no background music playing over my day showcasing me as the perfect wife, mom, entrepreneur, and Superwoman like you see in the movies. It’s simply me making my life work every day. And in order to make things work, I have learned to prioritize what matters most, put some things on the back burner, and let some things just fall off completely.

Yes, my business is important, but my family is non-negotiable. I delegate a lot (I will not be the bottleneck), and I rely on my amazing team to get work done for my business. Some days I don’t answer calls, reply to emails, check Instagram, or respond to text messages because I want to spend time with my family or because I don’t want to deal with anything or anyone else. Other days I utilize mobile productivity apps on my phone, like the Bank of America app,  to help me multitask when I’m not sitting directly at my desk. I no longer try to be Superwoman or chase the mythical idea of “work-life balance”. I give myself the grace to not be all the things, all the time. 

2. Embrace your emotions

Next up is my mental health. I’ve learned that fully embracing the emotions I’m feeling as opposed to trying to ignore them or push them aside really helps me manage my mental health. Sometimes that means I just need to take that deep sigh and have a good cry. It’s inevitable that you’ll get feedback you hate. Your customers will hate your product. Investors will tell you your business sucks. Friends will think you’re going through a phase. You’ll be too broke to buy that thing you really want, when if you had a “real job” it wouldn’t even be a question. So yes, sometimes, crying is necessary. However, just because it’s okay to cry doesn’t mean you let it become a crux. 

3. Don’t let imposter syndrome get the best of you

And finally: Let’s talk about that damn imposter syndrome, which pops up at the most inconvenient times, making you feel less than good enough, uncapable, and unworthy. It promotes that negative self-talk and self-judgment…I’ve experienced imposter syndrome a ton and let me tell you, it never goes away. It’s always right there, the annoying uninvited guest, rearing its ugly head just before every milestone and every accomplishment. However, I’ve come up with ways to tackle it and minimize its impact in my life. I’ve found that sharing my mindset challenges with my husband, my business advisors, my friends, and my business peers can be incredibly helpful, especially when it comes to reminding me that I’m being totally irrational with those thoughts of feeling less than who I am.

I also started keeping a list of all my business and life accomplishments (no matter how small) because they remind me how far I’ve come and what I’m capable of doing. I wrote down being at my kids’ Kindergarten graduation, and attending their class plays. I’ve written down every media opportunity I’ve had….I wrote down being featured in a dedicated [television] segments. [I wrote down being a] four-time published author. Yes. That was me. Take that, imposter syndrome! I don’t believe your lies. I’ve got the real facts!

The truth is, no amount of preparation can get you totally ready for the rollercoaster that is the business-building journey….It’s all about making it work in the way that works for you, giving yourself the grace to accept that doing your best is enough, and reminding yourself why you’re amazing and more than capable of achieving success.

This Career Coach Shares 4 Ways You Can Combat Work-Induced Stress

Are you one of the 70% of Americans who say they experience work stress, and that work is your number one stressor over family or even financial issues? How to deal with work stress may seem stressful itself. As it is the harmful, physical, and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of your job do not match your capabilities, resources, or needs. In essence, stress sets in when there is a lack of fit between an employee and their work environment.

Work stress eventually results in physical and mental health issues if left unaddressed. In some extreme cases, toxic work stress can ultimately result in traumatic experiences. The most straightforward way to address it is often to find aligned work, but that isn’t always an option for everyone.

If this sounds a bit like what you are currently experiencing, here are four things you can do if you're currently unable (or not ready) to pivot into doing aligned work. 

1. Identify your triggers

Start by clarifying what stress feels like for you so that you're able to identify your triggers. How do you know when you’re stressed? What thoughts do you have? What happens in your body? 

Pay attention to how you feel at work for a week or two. How do you feel physically in your body, emotionally in your heart and mind, and mentally? Then, record any situations, events, and people that lead to you having a negative physical, mental, or emotional response.

During each entry in your records, answer these questions: 

  • Who was involved in the situation?

  • What was your reaction?

  • How did you feel before, during, and after?

After two weeks, evaluate. You might find obvious stressors or patterns, and notice subtle but persistent stress causes such as specific work tasks, interactions with particular people, or an uncomfortable workspace. 

2. Set non-negotiable work boundaries 

The fact is work never ends. There’s always something to do, and if you’re already experiencing stress at work, it’s important that you become very clear and strict about your boundaries. 

I know a lot of times, it can feel uncomfortable to set or establish boundaries. Still, it’s important to remember that you show up better for everybody when you are healthy, whole, and happy. And when you don’t have clear boundaries, you experience more work stress. So you show up as a lesser version of yourself. 

It’s also important to remember that it is your responsibility to hold your boundaries and not other people’s. People will always try to push your boundaries; your job is to ensure they are not successful. 

Whether it’s boundaries around work hours, communication, the tasks you take on, or whatever that looks like for you, identify where you are experiencing stress at work and set clear boundaries for yourself, and those around you.

3. Adopt strong conflict resolution practices

Another major cause of work stress is the relationships and interactions we have at work, with colleagues and managers. If after identifying your triggers, you notice that your work stress is mostly coming from relationships, then it might be time to evaluate your communication practices.  

Do you speak up when you feel like your values have been violated? Do you speak up when your boundaries have been violated? Lastly, do you advocate for yourself? If you’re not doing any of these things, they might lead to conflict and thus causing you to experience work stress. In this case, you’re going to want to develop clear conflict resolution and communication skills that allow you to advocate for yourself.

Here’s a simple process to follow to help you address workplace conflict:

  • Identify what exactly the conflict is.

  • Meet with the source of your conflict.

  • Communicate the situation (and remember, communication involves talking and listening).

  • Identify a solution.

  • Enforce the solution. (see no. 2 above)

4. Be proactive with your restoration practices.

When you’ve been in a work situation that has been stressful for an extended period, there’s a high chance that your stress response systems are overwhelmed. And when your stress response systems are overwhelmed, that’s when trauma sets in, along with your ability to cope goes out the window. 

If you’ve been experiencing chronic toxic stress that your body hasn’t been able to manage well, your brain changes on a fundamental level. It changes how you interact and see the world, and collapses the time between event and reaction in your life. You might find yourself “overreacting” to certain situations at work, or getting stressed quicker and more intensely than you’d expect.

Mindfulness can help you rewire your responses and interaction with the world. It can help you feel psychologically safe and perceive the world as is, and not through your stress lens. Note that mindfulness is not a treatment for clinical trauma but simply a coping strategy you can use to navigate work stress. If you’ve been experiencing chronic work stress for years, an important component of your healing is going to be therapy.

On a final note, at some point, it’s no longer about stress management, or about coping strategies and preventing stress. If you’re doing unaligned work, you will experience stress and there’s nothing you can do about it. It might be time for you to start making your exit plan and finding something else to do.

Former Harvard Meditation Advisor Shares Steps On How Entrepreneurs Can Overcome Doubt

Doubt: It’s one of those one-syllable feelings that can feel catastrophic as an entrepreneur. About four in ten newbies and business owners experience this all-too-common emotion, but its ubiquity doesn’t make it any less challenging. According to former Harvard Meditation Advisor Kassi Underwood, the present moment has a lot to offer uncertain entrepreneurs—even if, in this very moment, it’s hard for you to believe that sitting with your doubt is the way to go. 

An author, podcaster, and entrepreneur, who holds a Masters of Divinity from Harvard, has come against her fair share of self-questioning. Below, she offers her perspective on what doubt actually is, why it may manifest more often for women and non-binary entrepreneurs, and what to do when you find yourself in the grips of this emotion. 

So, what is doubt? And why does it run more rampant among women entrepreneurs

Underwood has a simple definition: “Doubt is fear. It’s that simple,” she says. “A lot of things that we label with more complex terms are just fear. Guilt is fear. Doubt is fear. Doubt is, 'I don't know if I can do that,' which is another way of saying, 'I'm afraid I can't do this. I'm afraid.'” Mic drop, right? 

Understandably, this doubt (aka fear) doesn’t target all people equally. Women and non-binary entrepreneurs—and particularly those who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) —are up against discrimination that makes the fear more readily available. Since women-founded startups receive just 2.3 percent of venture funding and the funding gap is even bleaker for founders of color, it makes sense that you may constantly be asking yourself questions like, “Can I do this?” and “Are the steps I’m taking leading me toward success?”

What’s more, as women, we may be more likely to question our leadership skills in the C-suite. “Those of us who grew up as girls are programmed with the beliefs that we should be quiet, or we're going to come across as bossy or rude or demanding,” Underwood says. “We're taught that we're not supposed to care about money, or that if we do that, we're a gold digger or we're too masculine. There are so many insults that come with being a female entrepreneur.” If any of this sounds familiar, know that your experience is normal (which is not to say it’s acceptable or fair that you have to deal with it.) 

Over time, systematic change like more funding going to women entrepreneurs will hopefully take the burden of doubt off all of our shoulders (or, okay, at least lighten the load). In the meantime, however, Underwood has five steps to help you approach doubt with mindfulness. So go ahead: Plug into the present moment. 

1. Meditate (for one minute!) in the morning to reduce your overall quantity of fear triggers

No surprise here! Diffusing doubt doesn’t start the moment you begin to feel uncertain; it starts the second you open your eyes. If meditating for 20 minutes feels daunting to you, never fear. Underwood has designed a one-minute, daily meditation that you can do in the morning to head off doubt before the day has even begun, so you have less “Ahhh!” moments later in the day. 

2. Identify and put words to your fear

“If a fear comes up, first of all, identify what you’re afraid of in the moment. Like, ‘I'm afraid that I'm going to send this email, and they're going to say no,’” Underwood shares. Once you’ve taken a pulse on what it is that has your heart racing, you can start working through it, which leads us to…

3. Identify the “lie you’re telling yourself”

“In fear, there's always a lie that I'm telling myself,” Underwood says. “One of the most prominent lies that women tell ourselves is, 'I can't handle that. If this goes to shit, I won't know what to do next.' And, of course, that's not true. You're gonna figure it out like you're a badass woman and you're gonna know in the moment, what to do next, but you can't solve a problem that's not even happening.”

Find your lie. 

4. Write out the worst-case scenario and the best-case scenario

Now that you’re holding your fear in one hand and your lie in the other, you’re ready to plan. “The next thing to write down is, 'how would I handle the worst case scenario with courage? What's that look like?' And then what's the best case scenario? What news do I want to create for myself, my life, and life in general?”, says Underwood. 

For example, if the worst-case scenario is that you lose a client, the best-case scenario may be that you now have an open slot for a cool new client that aligns with your values. Bam. 

5. Keep the fruits of this exercise nearby

“You can put some of those lines up on your fridge or in your office,” Underwood advices. “They will start inspiring you and help you cut through those moments of doubt. So you'll be in doubt, but you have already done the exercise. You're like, ‘Oh, right. I don't believe that anymore. Like I actually can handle this. Even if the bad sh*t happens, I can handle it.” You absolutely can!

4 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Start a Business

Last year, a record-breaking 5.4 million people filed to form new businesses in the United States. The entrepreneurial spirit is clearly in the air, and that’s never been more evident than when we gathered creators, CEOS, and entre-precurious folks from all different backgrounds together at our LA conference last month.

In one chat, aptly named “So You Want To Start a Business,” four powerhouse business women served up their best advice for starting, funding, and growing a new business. Those panelists were…ready? Roll call:

As you can probably imagine, the four of them had plenty of wisdom to share with anyone who’s in the “Should I?” stage of launching a business endeavor. And luckily, we’ve collected that knowledge and put it into a checklist below to help you decide whether your idea is ready for take-off. 

1. Does my business have the qualities of a great (and lucrative) business idea? 

Once the initial jolt of “OMG, I have an idea!” passes, you’ll need to determine whether or not your business holds water. In her role at Bank of America, Gonzalez has done her fair share of mentoring founders—something that you can tell is incredibly rewarding for her.

“Small businesses are so exciting!” she shared on stage. “There’s so much passion that comes from small business owners. Every time I get the opportunity to go in and visit a small business at their place of business, it’s exciting. The pride is coming off those small business owners and there’s nothing more rewarding.” 

The most important thing to consider before you start, says Gonzalez, is ambition. “We talk about COVID-19 and what just happened there, and it was hard for a lot of our business owners,” she says. “You really have to have that ambition, that excitement for what you do each and every day regardless of what’s going on around you.”

The other key ingredient? A plan! Gonzalez explains you need to do your research on your business: Who is your competition? What is the scope of business? Where are you going to be most successful? What is your plan for success? While so much goes into a great idea, if you can lock in your ambition and know your business like the back of your hand, you’re off to a great start.

2. Am I owning and evolving my relationship with money?  

Sokunbi, whose business Clever Girl Finance provides resources and support for financial freedom, has made her fair share of money mistakes. While she’s been super transparent about her own personal experience, she notes one common financial gaffe she sees tons of new founders make. 

“We let our mistakes push us into a corner where we start to feel embarrassed or disappointed, but we want to own those mistakes because these mistakes are opportunities for us to assess what went wrong, what we didn’t like, and how to position ourselves next time,” she says. After that, you're ready to toss that mistake in the trash and keep the lessons close to you. 

3. Does my business story stand out? 

As a business owner, you’re going to tell your story a lot. Just think about how many times you’ve heard the origin story of Steve Jobs working out of his parents’ garage. Developing a narrative for yourself and a business takes some workshopping, but don’t worry: Gonzalez shares the secret sauce.

“Your passion needs to radiate so everyone feels it,” she says. “It’s not just what you’re doing, but it’s how you’re going to make it different. Everyone can have the exact same idea, but it’s you that will make the difference about whether that idea can be successful.” In case you’re looking for a recipe, personal passion plus a killer business idea equals a compelling business story.  

4. Do I have my banking in check?

Getting your finances in order is an essential step towards feeling confident and competent, while you bring your idea to fruition. How to Write a Killer Grant Proposal for Small Business

Grant proposals are similar to business plans, include many of the same elements and have the same purpose: to get that money. 

Most grants fall into three categories: federal, private, and corporate grants. There are no federal grants specifically for women, but there are private grants for women from foundations, private organizations, and businesses. 

Grantmakers usually distribute funds through Request for Proposals (RFP), concept papers or grant announcements and bidding processes. Committees read, score and make recommendations for funding. But what are they look for when allocating funds? Decisions are based on the applicant's ability to fit their idea or proposal into the grantmaker's area of interest. If your goals are not in line with the grant's goals, it is unlikely that they will fund your program or idea. 

So just as a cover letter should be tailored to the job for which you're applying, your grant application needs to be as specific as possible. Writing a competitive grant proposal takes time as well as a thorough understanding of your mission. When we're talking "free" money it's going to take a chunk of your free time. 

Here are 5 steps to ensuring you're in the running. 

1. BE MORE SPECIFIC 

We can't overstate this: Your grant proposal should be finely tailored to the organization offering the grant. For example, the Eileen Fisher Women-Owned Business Grant Program is in its 13th year and support leadership programs for women and girls, women-owned businesses and local communities. It is a grant program offering aid to women in business that are beyond the start-up phase and ready to expand their business, their potential for positive social and environmental impact. The program has very specific eligibility requirements. For example, the business must be in operation a minimum of three years, at the time of application. But is also has more nebulous requirements. Here is where you pull ahead of the pack. There are plenty of female-owned business that have been in operation three plus years. But how many of those align with the Eileen Fisher company mission and leadership practices? Nail this. 

Many grant proposals are scanned first so you need to be very clear and have sentences that stand out. Don't be over-flowery and don't try to "sound smart." Jargon is your enemy in this case. 

2. DO YOU HAVE TO START ON PAGE ONE?

No. This isn't the SAT. You can start in the middle and jump around. Or start with your strengths and work from the inside out. If there is a section of the proposal you know you can nail, begin there because it will give you the confidence to move into sections you find more intimidating. 

Some applicants like to start with the executive summary (always used in business plans) or introduction. It's the highlight reel that will help you develop an outline for the remainder of your proposal. Others like to start with the budget because numbers are easier to crunch (and more concrete) than ideas. 

Ask yourself: What are my strengths? What are my priorities? What problem am I solving? Why am I the person to solve it? 

3. THE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY IS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION

If the cover letter is the hello hook, the executive summary is what draws the reader in and commits them to reading the rest of your proposal. It is one of the most crucial pieces of writing and it is your chance to make a powerful first impression and identify yourself clearly. So what do you need to include?

1. The business idea and mission, proposed title, the problem it solves, and why it's needed in the marketplace. 

2. Describe not only the need but objectives and deliverables as well. 

3. An overview of the key points that match the funder's interest. (Refer to earlier point about the Eileen Fisher grant.)

4. How much the total project will cost. 

5. Keep it at one page. 

6. Make sure to thank the funder for consideration. 

The committees that read grant proposals for a living know when details have been thought out and when they haven't. 

4. MAKE YOUR OBJECTIVES SMART

Use the acronym SMART when developing your key objectives to make sure you're on-track. 

S - Specific
M - measurable
A - Action oriented
R - Realistic
T - Time oriented

5. REACH OUT TO A FORMER AWARDEE 

If you're really stuck most grant programs make former winners public. If you want advice reach out to a company that received funding and ask for guidance. They may be willing to offer it to you, they may not. But if you ask for a 30 minute coffee or phone call and the request is granted, well, you're one step closer to writing a killer proposal. 

Remember: this is a complicated and long process. These suggestions are the tip of the iceberg. One of the most important things you can do is give yourself ample time to complete the proposal. As well as give someone you trust ample time to review it. 

It can be a game-changer to have someone validate your work, but there's no such thing as easy money.
