Celebrating 60 Years of Redefining Beauty

Free to be beautiful.

The last 60 years have been a daring exploration in change. We’ve witnessed the rise of the female entrepreneur. Birth control was approved. We marched and made some noise; some of us burned bras and set fire to the world in the process. Females now outpace males in college enrollment. And we have more women of color in the Senate than ever before. We changed history. We made history.

It’s because we care. We care about our future and the future of generations to come. We care about the world and how we move within it. We care about ourselves and each other.

And for over 60 years, Dove has been providing the same great superior care and championing real beauty for generations of women. Your grandmother who never thought she’d vote for a female president. Your own mom who fought the stigma of being a working mother. And now you. You’re part of a generation that is redefining everything, especially beauty standards.

When it comes to beauty over the last 60 years, just about everything has changed. Trends have come and gone (so long 1980 and everything you brought), hairstyles coiffed, curled, and then chopped, but some beauty essentials are as relevant now as they were half a century ago. This month, Dove is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its iconic Dove Beauty Bar, which has remained unchanged since its launch in 1957.

To commemorate this milestone, Dove released a new video showing a retrospective of iconic beauty moments and the Dove brand’s heritage of featuring real women in its ads and caring for their skin.  Women have redefined beauty, built confidence, and challenged stereotypes, and it is the brand’s honor to have been by their side since 1957, caring for them every step of the way, and making way for a new norm to be established: one that focuses on redefining beauty.

We are excited to have partnered with Dove to not only bring you a list of 10 groundbreaking women in the beauty industry, but to celebrate their 60 years of superior care. For a limited time in January and February, 2017, the Dove Beauty Bar will be engraved with the word ‘care.’

It’s one of the most important words when it comes to beauty. Self-care. Carefree. It also just so happens to be the first four letters of one of our favorite words as well: career. Coincidence? We think not.

Together, we can keep redefining beauty for the next 60 years. Share how you will continue to redefine beauty and #RaiseTheBeautyBar on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. And click here to read the list of our 10 amazing Create & Cultivate 100 Beauty honorees who have been catalysts for change and inspiration.

Your Ultimate Holiday Survival Guide

Have you bought your boss a present yet?

Credit: @klassykinks

It’s the happiest season of all. And truth be told, it also happens to be rather stressful. Because while some people are already underway wrapping presents, you’re busy wrapping up deals. And still trying to RSVP with cheer to all of the invites that keep showing up.

People love the holidays. They love celebrating. But how do you handle the holidays? Make a list, check it twice, and then follow our advice on how to do the last two weeks of December with style and grace, all while smelling good.

WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT RSVPs?

It’s hard to sort through the invites. You want to say “yes” to everything, but as in business you’ve learned that sometimes, it’s important to say “no” and give yourself a night off.

But there’s one invite you should always make time for: the boss’ house.

You’ve been invited to your boss’ holiday shindig, which is separate from the company dinner you’re attending. It’s at his/her house. His/Her friends will be there. Other important people you probably want to talk to. Shake hands with. Do you go? Yes. Always yes to this.

If the invite has been extended, it’s for a reason, and you should make the time.

BUT SHOW UP EMPTY-HANDED? PROB NOT.

You don’t need to bring the traditional bottle of wine. Everyone brings wine. Here’s a chance to show your boss that you remain a forever out-of-the-box and ahead-of-the-game thinker. So what do you bring? Try an Indian Khadi Napkin set. Traditionally used as men’s handkerchiefs, the shape makes for a great everyday napkin.

Offer the gift upon arrival and make sure to add a personalized note. If for some reason you don’t end up handing the gift directly to your boss, you want to be sure they know it’s from you.

WHAT TO WEAR? IS FORMAL WEAR TOO FORMAL?

Not in December!

Looking nice is not a simple formality, it’s a chance to wear all those clothes you bought with the intention of stepping up your 2016 outfit game. But the year is coming to a close and some of those clothes still have their tags on. Pull ‘em off!

From friends’ holiday fetes to a co-worker’s bash, ‘tis the season for dressing up. Even if it’s not a formal party, people love dressing up for the holidays. Those statement earrings you’ve been dying to let dangle? Wear them! The high-waist tuxedo pant with stilettos and off-the-shoulder blouse? That outfit is made for the holidays.

HOW TO STAY SO FRESH, SO CLEAN

With a pile of invites and a stack of work to soldier through before before the close of the business year, chances are you’re going to be heading straight from the office to celebrations.

So how do you make sure that you not only look good, but smell good too? We’ve partnered with Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant to answer all of your party-prep needs.

"Spread the love. That’s what the holidays are all about."

Tweet this

Dove Dry Spray goes on instantly dry, lasts up to 48 hours AND cares for your skin. So, later that night, when a waiter is passing apps, you don’t have to worry about passing out holiday hugs to friends, co-workers, and new acquaintances. Lift those arms. Spread the love. That’s what the holidays are all about.

FINALLY DO YOU GIVE YOUR BOSS A HOLIDAY GIFT? WHAT ABOUT YOUR CO-WORKERS

If you go above and beyond for you boss, it might not look great. Your boss knows how much you make. So if you intend to buy a holiday gift for your higher-up, make sure it’s something reasonable.

Keep in mind the aforementioned and don’t think inside the box. You don’t need to get her cookies. But a small-batch bottle of whiskey that only becomes available during the holidays? Great. A candle from Le Labo always goes over well and will make their home or office smell amazing.

When it comes to co-workers, you know best. Especially if you have a BIG team. Instead of stressing out and breaking the bank, write the team members you work closely with a thoughtful greeting. A little goes a long way during the holidays. If you can make them smile, that’s a job well done.

10 Must-Have Products for 10 Million Women On-the-Go

We know how stressful being a boss on-the-go can be. Don't break a sweat.

@thecultofshe

October is Women’s Small Business month. A time where we support and acknowledge the nearly 1200 women who are starting new businesses every day. A time where we celebrate the momentum of the 10 million women who are innovating in their careers.

According to the Survey of Business Owners women-owned employer firms employ 8.9 million people. They generate 1.4 billion dollars. The societal and economic impact is clear.

Dove has always encouraged women to be confident. Not only to define beauty on their own terms, but to be as bold with their ideas. Beauty confidence filters into boss confidence. And it inspires other women to likewise be their best selves. If you can’t see it, you can’t be it.

To celebrate the 10 Million Strong, here are 10 must-have products to make the life of the on-the-go-get-em business woman all the better.

Mark & Graham Bracelet Charger

Designed for the mobile lifestyle, this lightweight bracelet also doubles as a charger. Get rid of on-the-go anxiety about a dead battery, charge up and then charge into that meeting. That seat at the table is yours. Or charge during the meeting. Because, multi-tasking.

 Away Luggage Carry On

For the 32-hour business trip, you want a carry-on that can handle anything that comes its way. With a built-in USB port, sturdy shell, and a design to fit almost all airlines carry-on restrictions, you can get in and out of any airport with time to spare.

Suave Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo

On-the-go doesn’t leave a lot of down time. If you need a touch-up or a little refresher, you can get to the root of the problem with a spritz of dry shampoo. Revive your hair, extend your blowout, and look fresh. (It’ll be our little secret.)

Amazon Echo

As founder it may feel like you’re on a small business quest alone, but you’re not. That voice you hear in the background is the sound of Alexa, the brain behind the Amazon Echo. The hands-free speaker you control with your voice. It plays music, controls lights, reads audiobooks, the news, and answers any pressing question you might have. Like, Alexa, what’s my commute? Or Alexa, set a timer for 30 minutes. And you can crank out those morning emails and get out of the house on time.

Dry Spray Antiperspirant

You don’t have time to wait around, and with Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant you don’t have to. It goes on instantly dry so you can just shake, spray and go. Plus, it lasts up to 48 hours -- because it’s important to stay dry during high-stakes moments -- and also cares for your skin. The last thing you want to worry about in a pitch meeting are your underarms.

Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant was a sponsor at Create + Cultivate Atlanta.

The 2017 Planner

Your life might depend on your phone, but what if you lose or break your phone? Every well-prepared boss woman always has a backup, and the best way to make sure that you’re not breaking a sweat when tech fails is to have a planner with you.

Wifi Hotspot

There will be times when you need to answer an important email that requires more than what your phone can do. Even in 2016, wifi is not easily accessible in every corner of the world, so make sure you’re ready with a handy wifi hotspot to save you on any occasion. Because the wifi always, always manages to pull a vanishing act when that 11th-hour email needs to go out.

Airborne or Vitamin C

If work puts you up in the air, you’re susceptible to poor plane air quality and are more prone to getting sick. Stock up on the vitamin C and drinks lots of fluids. The first step to making sure you’re your best self while traveling is taking care of your physical health first.

Business Cards

When you’re traveling, you’re ready to network. But don’t ever miss out on an opportunity to introduce yourself to any potential clients-- whether on the conference room floor or in line at the TSA security check. For every situation, make sure you have your business cards easily accessible. Moo makes all kinds of cards for the modern, creative professional.

Parachute Percale Venice Set

When you finally crawl into bed after a long day’s work or make it home after a trip, you should experience joy. The joy of expertly woven sheets crafted from Egyptian cotton. The joy of affordable luxury. The joy of knowing you gave your day your all.

7 Life Lessons I Learned from a Two-Year-Old

Big teachings from a little peanut.

In the midst of our day-to-day, the rise, the grind, the email and making moves, it’s all too easy to forget the simple things. The parts of life that make us feel lucky to be here and the people that make us feel strong, inspired, and imbued with the confidence to carry-on.  But if you slow down, it’s easy to see that something as small as one word or action can be impactful enough to change the course of a day, a year, a lifetime.

This is something that Dove understands. That a simple Beauty Bar, shared between generations of moms and daughters, friends and sisters, can reveal radiant and beautiful skin. That one word has the power to change your outlook on the world. It’s why for a limited time the words love, real, kind or care will be engraved into the Dove Beauty Bar. Four letters that remind us as women to love, care, be kind, and be real with ourselves-- and the other women we are grateful to have in our lives.

In honor of Mother’s Day, who better to remind us about the power of words, than a child first learning and experiencing the wonder of language? Because a conversation with a two-year-old is the most real, most honest conversation you will have at any point, during any day, and they are wise beyond their years.

“CLOSE THE COMPUTER”

This is for the woman who is committed to her job, but deserves to take a break. We all know how easy it is to fall into the trappings of work. We think, in order to get ahead we need to bury ours in work. This isn’t the case, and sometimes the best thing you can do for your career and life, is close the computer and focus on the people in front of you.

IT’S OK TO CRY

How poignant, and at the same time, how difficult for us to understand as adults. We’re told that we should step outside if we need to cry. But there is strength in understanding and giving in to your humanity and emotion.  We’re strong, independent, and capable but no one needs to be the rock all the time. That’s what leaning on your team— work and personal— is for. Know that crying doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human.

"Crying doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human."

YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL MOMMY

To a two-year-old, what is most beautiful is the love you share. It has nothing to do with what you wear, if you’ve done your hair, or if your makeup is just right. This is a message we can carry to all our friends, and every woman in our life. What makes you beautiful is how you radiate.

I AM SO BRAVE

Fear is normal (especially when it comes to starting a business or taking a leap of faith like so many of us have done) but there would be no bravery without fear. There would be no reward without risk. So go for it. Whatever it is. And when things don’t land exactly where you planned, memorize this next lesson.

IT’S GONNA BE OK.

It doesn’t always seem like it, and days when you’re down feel like they’ll last a lifetime. But you have survived every single one of your worst days yet. That’s a fact, and the women in your life are there to support you. So know with certainty, that it’s gonna be OK.

WHY DID YOU EAT THE ICE CREAM, ALL?

We don’t have to do everything in order. Sentence structure included. We get so caught up in making sure we check things off our to-dos (both work and life) but there is no one right path. In fact, switching up your path and doing a few things out of order is occasionally what the life doctor orders. (And remember: sometimes it’s perfectly OK to eat all the ice cream and love yourself for it.)

"Sometimes it’s perfectly OK to eat all the ice cream and love yourself for it."

Tweet this

I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU

There are never enough ways to say “I love you.” There is never a wrong way to say it either. When a child reaches out touches your face, and whispers, “I love you, I love you, I love you,” take it as a cue to spread the love far and wide.

Whether it’s your mom, grandmother, sister, daughter, friend or mentor, I invite you to use the power of words to honor a beautiful woman in your life. Share a post, a tweet, a picture, and let her know how much she means to you. Tell her how she shows you the meaning of love, kind, real or care, using the hashtag #BeautyIs.

Arianna Schioldager is the editorial director at Create & Cultivate. She wishes every mom out there a very happy, love-filled Mother's Day.
