Soft Is Strong: How Taking a Softer Approach Can Have a Powerful Impact on Your Career
NIVEA is leading the charge in challenging the “soft” stereotype.
This post is in paid partnership with Nivea.
Being soft gets a bad rap and is all too often associated with being weak, especially in the workplace. In fact, according to a recent survey conducted by NIVEA, 59% of people view "being soft" as a negative and 49% of people define the word "soft" as being "weak." That’s why NIVEA—a brand that’s been dedicated to giving us all soft, beautifully nourished skin for over 100 years—is on a mission to challenge this negative perception of 'being soft' with their #RethinkSoft campaign. That’s right, in partnership with Kindness.org, NIVEA is destigmatizing softness.
At our annual LA 2020 conference, we sat down with successful women who, like NIVEA, are challenging the negative perception of soft and celebrating its power. During the Soft Is Strong panel powered by NIVEA, our founder, Jaclyn Johnson, chatted with Noor Tagouri, renowned journalist, activist, and motivational speaker, Jaclyn Lindsey, co-founder and CEO of Kindness.org, Adrienne Bosh, activist, CEO, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, and Gina Ybarra, creator of Hunt for Styles, about how softness has had positive, long-lasting impacts on their careers.
Spoiler alert: The conversation was just as enlightening as it was entertaining, so be sure to scroll on for all the most memorable moments from the conversation. Trust us, you’re going to want to commit these mic-drop quotes to memory.

Ask The CEO: Should You Go Into Business With Your Partner?
Communication is the foundation of a great relationship, work or otherwise.
In 2009, Courtney Nichols Gould left her job as a tech startup executive, moved to Los Angeles, and took a beat to think about what she wanted to do next. While in LA, she reconnected with an old colleague, Gordon Gould, who was researching how nutrition affects children’s brain health. The two joined forces and launched SmartyPants, a vitamin company with a sharp focus on high-quality ingredients, affordability, and great taste. Coincidentally, she and Gordon also fell in love and got married, so her business partner is now her real-life partner, too.
We checked in with Courtney on her biggest hurdles, best advice, and what it’s like to run a multimillion-dollar business with her spouse.
How did you step into the wellness space?
SmartyPants started out as a conversation among friends and shared struggles in finding an elegant, high-quality, palatable, and affordable solution to gaps in our diets and our family’s diets. Initially, we just wanted to launch a comprehensive solution for parents, but as soon as we launched our “baby” online back in 2011, we heard from so many parents that they wished we would make a comprehensive supplement for them to use as well. We realized the problem we were trying to tackle was great. Any problem takes time, attention, and likely money to solve, so being able to put all that energy toward solving a problem for a much larger group of people moved our interest to an all-out obsession that has been the engine for our growth—both in the number of customers and retailers we serve (from Amazon to Whole Foods to Costco) to the number of grant recipients we reach through our work with Vitamin Angels (8 million grants and counting!).
If you could go back to year one, what piece of advice would you give to yourself?
Every unpredictable nightmare increases your company’s capacity to handle its much bigger future—which turns a negative into a very big positive.
What do you think are some of the biggest hurdles in the wellness space today?
I think the scariest one is the “everyone is an expert” issue. Wellness has become one of the biggest growth areas for investment, which means a ton of money is flooding in, so ill-founded ideas can get resources. That might have negative consequences for investors in a field like fashion or mattresses, but in a field that intervenes with someone’s health, consequences are felt by the end user themselves. Combining that growth with primarily online sales without the kind of checks that retailers require (proof that you are testing and producing your products in accordance with FDA guidance) can create the very real risk that someone could become hurt, which is bad for all of us.
“Having someone in the trenches with you, husband or not, is critical to make sure you are leading with your best ideas.”
What is the best part of having a Co-CEO? And what’s it like working with your husband?
Being an entrepreneur can be a lonely and stressful business. Having someone in the trenches with you, husband or not, is critical to make sure you are leading with your best ideas. Bouncing things off each other ensures more rigor around your thinking and also means you can have a bad day and someone else can help step in and vice versa. Most of the great businesses I admire have a team at the helm. Working with your significant other can be hard, and it can be amazing! It’s all about communication. We feel really lucky to have been able to build this business together and for our kids to witness the amount of work required to build something from scratch.
Do you have any advice for women who are considering getting into business with their partners?
Make sure you have different skill sets. It works for us because we have very different areas of expertise. I run the business with a focus on product design from beginning to end, and he is our chief data scientist with a strong expertise in e-commerce—the foundation of our business.
What about your job makes you feel the most complete?
Being able to see that we are having a real impact: Through providing a better product to our customers; by showing other companies they can make better choices and still be profitable, which helps to change the industry as a whole; and by putting a matching grant in place with Vitamin Angels before we launched. That allows us to have a much bigger impact than we ever thought possible.
Where do you see the wellness and vitamins industries in the next 5 years?
I think you will see an increasing focus on quality and efficacy and a lot of new and interesting formats to drive compliance. With a lot of investment dollars out there, there will be plenty of competition, and that’s always a good thing for the end user.
What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received?
Never do or say anything you wouldn’t want to see printed on the front of the New York Times.
It’s how you make the hard decisions—that no one will ever know about—that shows you where your integrity lies.

4 Beauty Bloggers Share What Beauty Means to Them
It's a big B word.
What does beauty mean to you? It's personal, we get it, but it's a topic of note lately and one we'll be chatting about at C&CLA this Saturday.
As such, we had the most brilliant brunch with Clinique to kick off #CreateCultivateLA and it was a blast! Moisture surge was a hit! Millennial pink was the color. Beauty was the topic of discussion.
Destiney aka: Mom Crush Monday told us that Moms all around the world epitomize beauty to her. We asked her and Denise Vasi how they are teaching their daughters about beauty.
Destiney says, "Moms just radiate so much light and beauty to me. I teach my daughter about beauty through affirmations. We talk about being beautiful from the inside out."
Denise Vasi shared that when teaching her daughter about beauty, "The most important thing I want her to know is that beauty starts from the inside and whatever natural state she's in at any moment, that is when she's the most beautiful."
Specs and Blazers aka: Nike shared with us that she feels the most beautiful, "when I'm creating and writing for my blog."
Sazan says her two-month-old daughter epitomizes beauty to her, "because she's perfect!" We believe it.
Melissa Alatorre's definition of true beauty is, "Being confident in who you are and being yourself and never changing because you are unique and beautiful just the way you are."
Sophie Elkus and Simply Bianca Alexa both say their mothers define beauty for them. Sophie loves that her mom is caring and cooks for her. Moms are the best.
Bianca shared that her mother and grandmother epitomize beauty for her, "because they're such strong and powerful women and ever since I was little they've taught me to be comfortable in my own skin and to love who I am."

Meet Three Enterprising Women Who Make Their Own Hours
And have the career of their dreams!
Three women from three different cities with different backgrounds and dreams have all discovered a career they can control—where they’re in charge and defying the rules of today’s workplace.
How? Cabi. These three cabi Stylists turn homes into “alternative stores,” changing the way women shop for fashion—and the way they work. But beyond providing a solution to the frustration of modern day shopping, and earning a meaningful income while doing so, cabi Stylists are all about lifting women up, inspiring them to look and feel great, and becoming their best selves.
We’re dishing more.
Hannah Tomlin from Franklin Tennessee joined cabi as a Stylist in 2015. “I’d always dreamed of having a career in fashion,” Tomlin says, but admits, “Internally, I battled how to be part of this industry without getting engrossed in a culture that makes women feel like they aren’t enough.” That is, until she found cabi.
Katrin Brown, from Long Beach, CA has been a cabi Stylist for four years. Brown says, “As a young girl, I watched my mom build a sustainable business from home.” It was through that lens, as well as her mom’s mentorship and leadership, that Brown realized why building a cabi business was such a smart move for her future plans. She began her cabi career in 2014 and hasn’t looked back. She also has a full-time corporate career. Talk about hustle.
Archina Kumar, known to her friends and family as Cheena, also became a cabi Stylist in 2014. It was a decision the Northern Californian came to after pursuing multiple jobs and career paths that left her feeling unfulfilled. “I wasn’t passionate about my work, nor did I have the flexibility I needed.” For Cheena, cabi was a perfect solution. Given the flexibility to make her own hours, while also maintaining the ability to connect with people and transform women’s lives, Cheena found her passion.
Created as a way for women to live the life they’ve always wanted, cabi has changed the way women shop and work during the last 16 years. As more and more women grow frustrated and overwhelmed with the traditional shopping experience, cabi offers a solution that, amongst a digitally connected age, is grounded in human connection and relationship through independent Stylists who present the seasonal collections at home shows for groups of friends.
As a company dedicated to helping women create & cultivate the career of their dreams, we wanted to hear more from the women creating their dream careers with cabi.
More below.
Why was it important for you to take your career into your own hands?
Hannah Tomlin: After working 7+ years as a dental assistant (and countless other jobs), I realized the best I could hope for the future of my career was a small raise, if or when my boss would allow it. I also quickly realized I had a limit on my personal growth potential and I struggled to stay motivated. I felt like I was living to work without time for friendships, relationships, and the things that meant the most to me. When considering cabi, I thought, “Wow. This might be a really good opportunity for me to support myself.” I took the leap, and within a year and a half, I was able to quit my other jobs and just do cabi.
Katrin Brown: I remember I’d tell my friends my mom didn’t work because, in my eyes, she was always with me and my two siblings…whether she was cheering us on at our sporting events, helping out in our classrooms, chauffeuring us around from one activity to another, or getting dinner ready.
I came to learn that cabi provided her an opportunity to be a professional businesswoman doing something she loved with the flexibility to be a full-time mom. As I started my professional career, it was important for me to be part of a company that was more than just clocking in and out. I wanted to find a career that excited me, challenged me, and allowed me to do meaningful work. Most importantly, I wanted to maintain a work-life balance that allowed me to be fully present in my family, just like my mom. Cabi has given me the opportunity to do exactly this—and it’s fun!
Cheena Kumar: Before cabi, I held many different jobs, from a speech therapist on a Native American reservation to admin support and even a Zumba instructor. I was left in a challenging place where I needed a job and needed to connect with people since I was miles away from home. I also knew I needed the freedom and flexibility to pursue my passions that fulfill me, which is music ministry at my church. Cabi has given me all of this and provided the flexibility for me to do both.
Above: Katrin and her fave-- the Amour Dress.
In what ways does cabi allow you to redefine the rules of the workplace?
CK: As my own boss, I’m able to decide my hours, as well as the amount of time and effort I put into my business. More importantly, my work is meaningful and fulfilling—serving women and helping them feel confident in their own skin, letting their true beauty shine. For me, it’s not all about the clothing, it’s about the connection with each of my clients. We really get to personally know our clients, and what works and doesn’t work for their lifestyles and bodies. It’s not a relationship purely based on digital connection, it’s a personal relationship where I can become their go-to-fashion resource.
As a cabi Stylist, I have the privilege of working alongside incredible women who encourage, motivate, and inspire me. We’re always helping each other grow personally and sharing ways to grow our business. I’m so proud to be part of a company that’s transforming women’s lives through relationships.
KB: I’ve been able to completely redefine the traditional workplace through my cabi business because I get to manage it from home (sometimes in my pj’s!), call my own shots, set my own hours, and be my own boss! I have the freedom and flexibility to take my business with me wherever I go. That’s not the structure of a typical corporate job. When I’m not managing my business from home, I’m enjoying ladies’ night out with incredible women of all backgrounds and giving them an opportunity to build their wardrobe without having to go to the mall or shop online.
Above: Hannah and her fave-- the High Slim Jean in white.
HT: Cabi allows me to be my own boss, make my own schedule, and earn a substantial income with no ceiling, all while uplifting and serving women. I don’t know of another career or job that allows even two of those things at once! Starting a cabi business comes with all the rewards of being an entrepreneur without the risks and cost of starting a traditional retail business. We are making women look and feel good every day, helping them discover their personal style and building their confidence, which translates into every part of their daily life. You can see that change on the inside for women.
What’s been the most exciting part of working for yourself?
KB: The most exciting part of working for myself is knowing I’m investing in myself and there’s no cap on my earning potential. I work to live and don’t live to work. I feel fortunate to build this business over time alongside my full-time career and know effort over time will set me up for success as my family grows.
I WORK TO LIVE AND DON’T LIVE TO WORK.
Tweet this.
CK: I love that I’m my own boss! I have the freedom to be true to who I am. I enjoy the flexibility of being in control of my work hours, time, and effort I put into the business, giving me time for other passions of mine. There is no one else putting pressure on me and that’s a beautiful thing.
HT: My cabi business has been so rewarding and amazing—better than I could have dreamed! I never thought I would be my own boss and now I know there is so much freedom in that. I’m able to make time for what is most important to me. I feel more confident and content saying “no” to things that are unnecessary so I can focus on the things that matter. It’s such a blessing to have the ability to be my own boss! I can work as much or as little as I want in a way that allows me to balance all of the other responsibilities in my life.
What makes the cabi entrepreneurial opportunity unique and different from other businesses?
CK: Together, we’re changing the way women shop and work. The cabi opportunity lets us turn homes into what we call “alternative stores” without the overhead of a storefront. And, there isn’t the risk of a traditional entrepreneurial business—cabi has my back every step of the way and I’m surrounded by a community of like-minded women who support me at every turn. I’ve always felt that cabi is so much more than just a clothing brand. It’s a community of women that empowers other women to look and feel confident inside and out. I haven’t found this anywhere else.
HT: The most unique thing about cabi is the way cabi Stylists are all independent, yet we are in this together. We often say “You’re in business for yourself, but not by yourself,” and that’s because I’m surrounded by nearly 3,500 cabi Stylists who are here to support me and a Home Office that gives me the tools and training to be successful in my own business. We each run our businesses in a way that fits our personal lifestyles and work toward our own personal goals, yet there is not an ounce of competition between Stylists. I can’t imagine attempting this business without the love and support of my cabi community. It makes my life and my business so much richer and helps me to be a better Stylist.
Above: Cheena and her fave-- the Franklin Blouse.
How has your cabi business brought you financial security?
CK: As a single woman, it’s great to know I’m substantially contributing to my savings and building my future. When the time comes to get married, I know I can contribute financially and that’s such an empowering feeling. I see unlimited financial growth opportunities in my cabi business and I feel great assurance that I’m in control of my financial plan. As I continue to build my team and expand my business, my income can become sufficient for my needs for many years to come. But beyond just financial security, I get to do this business in a supportive and collaborative community of strong entrepreneurial women.
KB: I run my cabi business alongside my corporate career, which has brought me and my husband financial security in so many ways. Through my added cabi income, I was able to offset some of our wedding costs this past fall, I’m contributing to the down payment on our soon-to-be first home, and it helps fund the vacations we value so much!
How do you time manage when you don’t have a “boss” or “office?”
HT: It definitely takes discipline and organization. This is still a learning curve for me, but I’m always getting better and sharing ideas and tips with fellow cabi Stylists! In fact, we have regular calls with our teams so no one is ever left on their own; it’s our time to collaborate, get new ideas, and support one another. I try to keep a steady sleep schedule and routine to create the feel of getting up and going to the “office” and to maintain productivity.
KB: Cabi has given me the tools and training I need to be my own boss lady! I’m on top of my calendar to stay organized and manage my time. Setting “business hours” is key to making time for my husband and hobbies. My planner helps me prioritize my to-do list, achieve my goals, and stay focused on what’s most important.
And of course. We need to know. What’s your favorite fashion piece for this spring season and why?
KB: I’m loving the Heavy Petal trend and I adore florals in every variety—especially mixing florals and stripes. My favorite fashion piece is one-and-done dressing seen with the Amour Dress and the Simple Playsuit. I often tell my clients you can’t go wrong with dresses and playsuits all day, every day!
CK: I love the Franklin Blouse. The pop of red and the intricate detailing of the horizontal and vertical red, white, and blue pinstripes makes this such a flattering top for all shapes and sizes!
HT: Hands down, The High Slim jean in white. I LOVE white jeans because they make any outfit pop, and The High Slim has all of the best design elements: a higher rise (HELLO comfort in the waistline!), the perfect amount of destruction, and a stretchy yet gutsy fabric that’s comfortable and not sheer!

How to Handle Yourself at Work Drinks
Calm down, this is still business.
It’s finally happened.
You’ve been asked to WORK DRINKS. (#workparty.) After weeks of back and forth and fiddling with your schedules to make it work, the day has arrived. If you’re a little nervous, you’re not alone. First work drinks can feel like a super awkward odd first date. Are we friends...are we acquaintances...are you a spy and have plans to tell my boss everything I say? You never know.
So, what does it mean? What can you talk about? You’re still working, but it doesn’t have to be so buttoned up. This isn’t a conference call-- and there’s no hold music (prayer hands). To help you prepare we hit up our friends at Diageo to suss out some appropriate work drink convo starters. Think of these as your cue cards to success.
HUMANIZE YOURSELF
Hey you, yes you. You’re a human. Not a robot behind a computer with super emailing skills. Many of us have only every connected over email. Don’t start the convo off digging into proposals or ROIs. Talk shop… about yourself. You don’t need to over-divulge. Your new acquaintance is not your new therapist. Rather, talk about something you’ve done recently that has nothing to do with work. For instance, a book you read. An article that you enjoyed. “Did you happen to see that piece on The Cut…?” It’s a super easy, informal way to start that makes all parties feel at ease. If the answer is yes, bond over the content. If the answer is no, fill them in and see what they think.
ASK THEM ABOUT THEMSELVES
Once you’ve broken the ice with a little cocktail, ask how they got started in their current position. It’s a great way to get to know about their past and their work history, without flat-out asking about their day-to-day. While they’re talking about their past, present, and future, figure out a way you can help them out… if it makes sense. One of the best ways to make a good impression during a work drink meet up is to find common ground and goals. For instance, you might have someone you can introduce them to who can help them out. Maybe their company is looking for a new web designer and you happen to know the perfect person. Allow the convo about work to flow naturally, and you might end up being able to help them (and your friend) out. It’s a win-win.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
You don’t want to order #thesame. You want to show that you make your own decisions and are self-sufficient, that includes your cocktails. It’s the little things. Do your research before going out
to drinks so that you can make an educated decision and order your cocktail confidentially.
Some great cocktail choices include: the Crown Royal Old Fashioned, Crown Royal Vanilla and Hard Soda or Crownberry.
THEN BE DIRECT
Once you’ve done them a mini favor, bring up how you can better serve each other. If it’s going well and this is someone you can see yourself working with, don’t be afraid to put that on the table with a simple, “We should figure out how we can work together.” You’ll be able to read their vibe if they want to work with you as well. There’s no reason to side-step around the ask, whether it’s for your full time job or a side-hustle you’re working on, be direct.
Take charge.
And remember: Even if your boss or drinks-mate orders another cocktail, only ordering one shows self-discipline and maturity so make sure you sip slowly and drink plenty of water. If you do however, want to go home a make yourself a celebratory ‘job well done’ drink, we’ve got a couple of recipes (below) for you. Cheers to that!
Vanilla Mule
•1.5 oz. Crown Royal Vanilla
•2 oz. Ginger
•1 oz. Soda
•Lime
Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a copper mug and garnish with a lime.
CHEERS! 🥂

We've Got *all the* Tips If You're Rolling to Create & Cultivate Solo
Solo is the new yolo.
Going anywhere by yourself can be intimidating. Let alone being solo amongst a thousand women!
Recently, I attended Create & Cultivate Seattle. I did a lot of things leading up to an during the conference that helped me make the most of it. Some of it I did intentionally and some I did unknowingly - only realizing how helpful it was really after the fact.
That being said, I'm hoping some of these takeaways I'll be sharing with you below help you get your money's worth (because conferences aren't all that cheap!).
Study the agenda
All conferences are different but for the most part, they have a lot going on. Before attending Create & Cultivate Seattle, I *literally* did some brief research on every single speaker that was going to be there! This is a step you could also (should definitely) do before purchasing your ticket. That way you know if the content they're offering is even something you're interested in understanding more.
When I received my track (sometimes conferences will assign you the discussions you'll be attending), I did even more research on the speakers that were a part of that track! You could also make notes on the people you want to try and approach or even make note of panels you're okay with skipping, so you can check out the pop-up shops instead (or whatever else is going on at the conference you're attending).
Make your own agenda
This may be the most important step if you're serious about making the most out of your time there! Because you may have so many options, really take the time to sit down and write out a personalized agenda for yourself. Take note of all the things you definitely do not want to miss and maybe add another column of things you'd also like to attend if you end up having the extra time for it!
Did you end up seeing some individuals that you would like to try and introduce yourself to during your research stage? Write their names down! Also even take a brief note on what the individual does and why they inspire you. You'll definitely want to do that if you have a long list of people you're planning to try and meet.
Browse social media
Events nowadays typically create their own hashtag! And if they do it ahead of the event, explore that hashtag to see if you could find other people who will be attending too! Maybe you'll find someone you make plans to meet with ahead of time and you're ahead of the game when it comes to meeting people. I found a handful of women doing this and I think I only actually met one or two of them. But we still follow and support one another on social media (both the ones I met and didn't meet).
Be business card ready
Okay. Some people say business cards are outdated but regardless, I always have them on me. Especially if I'm attending an event where "networking" happens and the chances of this or that person remembering my name, contact info, and "title" are slim!
Don't have a business card or even an actual business? Don't sweat it. Head on over to Canva and use one of their templates or check out Moo.com! Put your name and contact info on there and call it a day. Just make sure you have something to hand all the awesome people you'll meet.
Attend the pre-game
Some conferences may have a pre-event before the big day. Some only offer it to VIP. Regardless, do some research and check to see if there's a mixer the night before or something. If there is, definitely go! Yes, even if you're intimidated to go alone. To be honest, I was a little hesitant myself but the thought of meeting someone who ended up miraculously becoming my future business partner motivated me to go. (Hey you never know!)
Create & Cultivate had a "happy hour" the night before and I met a few girls there that I ended up seeing throughout the day of the conference, which was cool because we'd say hi to each other and briefly go over how our days were going. Plus I still keep in touch with some of them on social media!
Pay attention to the pre-event emails
I am so happy that I took advantage of the shuttle that Create & Cultivate offered via *email. (Make sure you're checking and reading all the emails the conference sends you if they're doing that sort of thing). The Create & Cultivate Seattle conference itself was actually located in town right outside of Seattle, so I saved myself from a couple expensive Uber rides. Not only that but I actually also met my conference buddy in there!
Create a conference buddy
This isn't required. Totally optional. And also totally not guaranteed to happen. Your "conference buddy" is basically the person you randomly end up meeting, connecting with, and spending the day(s) together! I lucked out. Though, I totally would've been fine having not found a buddy because I wasn't expecting to. But I will say it was awesome experiencing it with someone I had just met and debriefing all the panels right after we saw them. As mentioned, I met her on the shuttle on my way there! We clicked, found out we were on the same track, and (without verbally expressing it) decided to conquer the day as a unit.
Venture away from your conference buddy
Although it is awesome to find someone you click with enough to experience the event together... you still want to give yourself the opportunity to meet and network with other people! Conferences are cool because you and all the other attendees have similar interests. So allow yourself to click with multiple people by straying away from your conference buddy every now and then.

Pre-Week Motivation From One of Our Favorite CEOs
She's also the dance party queen.
When Sonja Rasula, CEO & Founder of @UniqueMarkets, @TheUniqueCamp, and @TheUniqueSpace got the #CreateCultivateSEA crowd on the Main Stage AND dancing during our last conference, it was truly something special. As she stated on her personal IG,
"Here's to those willing to take risks, to say yes to the unknown, to be weird in front of hundreds of strangers. A week ago these brave women got up on stage with me, learned their moves in less than one minute, and gave-it-a-go in front of hundreds of women staring back at them. BRAVO TO THE DARING - the difference between most people and these women is that they climbed onto the stage, knew their moves wouldn't be in sync, were faced with judging stares and DID IT ANYWAYS. And when making decisions in meetings, or figuring out a business idea or planning for a presentation, my guess is these ladies will conquer anything you throw at them, instead of being nervous and sitting on the sideline. 🎉 It was an honor seeing you all at my workshop, just look at those smiles and those moves!!!!"
She's also the owner of the above words, which, might be one of our most liked photos on IG-- ever. So in preparation for our Create & Cultivate x Marriott Hotels popup in Portland this week, where Sonja will be taking the stage to keynote and inspired, we had her rework some of our favorite inspirational sayings.
Check out the below for a little pre-week motivation and be sure to RSVP to our Portland event here.
1. Original: Success comes to those who wait. Sonja’d: Success comes over nights.
2. Original: Do one thing every day that scares you. Sonja’d: If it's easy, you're not doing it right.
3. Original: You can do it, put your back into it. Sonja’d: UM I WOULD SAY EXACTLY THAT!
4. Original: People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. Sonja’d: All it takes is a big idea and a little crazy.
"If it's easy, you're not doing it right."
Tweet this.
5. Original: Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right. Sonja’d: You are your biggest critic, let go. Become your biggest cheerleader.
6. Original: Done is better than perfect. Sonja’d: Dreamers dream. Doers get shit done.

You'll Never Guess What This Top Blogger Says Is More Valuable Than Being #1
"I am the opposite of an overnight success."
Before Live Journal, there was Open Diary. A platform that OG, now Brooklyn-based blogger Keiko Lynn, used as a personal outlet. Today her blog KeikoLynn.com is a space where the self-proclaimed "restless adventurer" shares her take on fashion, beauty, and her daily life.
We caught up with Keiko to chat all things influencer and why you have to be willing to put in the time, without any immediate return.
After more than decade in the blogosphere (shout out to your 1999 Open Diary) how have you been able to stay true to yourself?
Since the primary focus of my blog started out as a personal diary, it's actually pretty difficult to not stay true to myself. I named my blog "Keiko Lynn" before I ever intended for it to be more than just a personal outlet, but it still maintains that personal feeling. If I ever strayed from my true self, I'd have a lot of friends and family and loyal readers to answer to.
You didn’t set out to build a brand, but that’s what you’ve done. How do you feel about person as brand? Did you ever have any hesitation?
It happened so gradually that I didn't really contemplate it, before or as it was happening. I am the opposite of an overnight success. It was little things here and there, starting with blogging for Cingular when I was on LiveJournal, or having a magazine featuring me in a photo shoot, etc. I would just think of them as solitary opportunities that I couldn't pass up, not as stepping stones in my career path. It was years before it became a career, and by that time, "Keiko Lynn" had been my online (and real life, of course) identity for long enough that I didn't think I should change it. I still don't think of myself as a brand. I never think, "Is this on brand for me?" I just know what I do and do not like; I know myself.

Do you consider yourself an early adaptor? What are some other important traits to have as a blogger and influencer?
When I started my current blog, I was a young and perpetually broke independent clothing designer, so everything I wore was handmade or from a thrift store, and most of my photos were taken with a self timer. That was what blogging was like, back then. We were remixing what we had in our closets. Now, we have bloggers who are starting out with a whole creative team behind them; they're coming in with photographers, beautiful web design, and a closet full of current, contemporary and designer clothing. I think that's amazing, and if you have the wherewithal or creative contacts to start a blog as a legitimate business platform, why not?! That's what's so cool about modern blogging -- you don't always have to go through the awkward growing stages that many of us went through. But I probably wouldn't have had a fighting chance, with my wide-angled, self-timer photos and second-hand clothing, if I weren't one of the early adopters. Even now that I have an actual closet (I didn't, back then), at least half of what I wear is vintage or thrifted...and I still take many of my own photos. I'm in a very particular niche, and I'm well aware that I was lucky to have early exposure.
The most important trait to have as a blogger is tenacity. I've known many people who started blogging and gave up after awhile, when they didn't see immediate growth. Overnight success stories usually only look like overnight successes. You have to be willing to put in the time without any immediate return, and keep going until you build yourself a base. It will come, but you have to keep going.

What are some shifts you’ve been hesitant to adopt, but eventually jumped on board?
I am famous for being late to just about every social media platform. My very first tweet was something along the lines of, "Let's see how long this lasts..."
Do you ever feel like, enough! No more apps, no more sharing, I can’t possibly add one more “must” to my social lineup?
I feel like that almost every day of my life. I drew the line at Periscope. I won't do another one...I can't!! Although Instagram just added their very Snapchat-like feature, and I might end up giving that a try. I'm trying not to be the last one for that.
We’ve talked to a few bloggers about unexpected difficulties and the BTS realities, but what are some BTS unexpected joys?
I have made some wonderful friends through blogging, whether bloggers, readers, or people in the fashion and beauty industry. When I moved to NYC, I barely knew anyone. I had one friend and a LiveJournal friend, and my roommate and I had only met a few times before living together. Making friends in a new city is so difficult, and the blogging world really opened me up to a whole community.
How do you come up with creative ideas?
With style, I look to the past. With makeup, I look to both the past and the runways. But mostly, I just garner inspiration from everyday life, whether it's someone I pass in the streets or a page from a current read.
What’s a business aphorism you live by/what’s one you don’t think rings true anymore?
As trite as it sounds to "stay true to yourself," it's something I live by in both work and in my personal life. But I also think it's important to let yourself evolve naturally; the two are not mutually exclusive. 31 year old me is not exactly the same as 19 year old me. Part of staying true to yourself is allowing yourself room to grow and evolve. What doesn't ring true anymore is that you have to always be number one. Staying power can be just as valuable.
"What doesn't ring true anymore is that you have to always be number one. Staying power can be just as valuable."
Tweet this.
What do you think you’d be doing without the advent of social media?
I think about this often, because when you're in this sort of career, you have to be on your toes. What if it all went away, tomorrow -- what would I do? I imagine I would go back to my roots and start a new clothing line or invest in starting a makeup line, which is something I've always dreamed of doing.
How do you feel about the term influencer?
What do you think is the future of influencer? I prefer the term when referring to other people, and don't mind when others use it to describe me -- but referring to myself as an influencer feels strange and boastful. The truth is, we're all influencers in some way. Some just have a larger audience.

3 Amazing Must-Read Tips for Brides-to-Be
It's wedding season ladies.
The weather in Austin was a little damp, but the vibe at the Simon G. Jewelry Happy Hour at Create & Cultivate SXSW was on fire. In part because of the dynamic energy of the room and the gorgeous jewels on display. But also, we had a S’mores bar y’all.
Allure editor-in-chief, Michelle Lee and Jessy Fofana of La Rue PR were in FULL convo mode, chatting everything fashion and business, but also bonded over their mutual love of beloved NYC nail salon Paintbox. Taking the weather into consideration, both NY-based ladies smartly paired their smashing outfits with chic sneakers.
Founder of May Designs Mica May, Ashely Rose of Sugar & Cloth, and local designer Claire Zinnecker, who designed the Simon G. custom booth at the conference, couldn’t stop taking Boomerangs. Mamrie Hart, Hannah Hart and Grace Helberg cheersed their delicious custom Crown Royal cocktails. Guests were given three signature cocktail choices: To Rye For, SXSW Deluxe, and Vanilla So Smooth. (Recipes here.)
Austin-based fashion blogger Olivia Watson of Livvyland marveled at the sparkles. Jessy and Claire also couldn’t stop trying on the gorgeous jewelry that was on display.
But the toast of the evening was digital darling Jenn Im and her new (!!) finacé Ben who chatted with Simon G.’s VP of Marketing and Communication, Brooke Brinkman about their upcoming nuptials. Brinkman, a wealth of knowledge when it comes to tying the knot, shared everything in her wedding wheelhouse. She’s a pro at picking wedding venues. Jenn was beyond excited to soak it all in. And now Brooke’s sharing with us!
Below are three of her best tips for brides-to-be.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOVECATION
Is there a place that holds sentimental value for you as a couple or your family? If not, perhaps there is a place that appeals to your style and personality. The location of your wedding will hold significance for the rest of your life, so it is important to choose something that is special or can be special for years to come. If there is not a place that appeals to your personality or holds sentimental value, then we would recommend you choose based on ease of travel for you and your guests.
HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT VENUE
Obviously you want to choose a venue that will accommodate your guest list, but size shouldn't be the only criteria you consider. While size is important, you don't want it to be too small and feel tight or to large and feel empty, you also want to make sure the venue allows you to host the event of your dreams. The venue should fit your personality and style...if you want to have live music, make sure the venue you select will accommodate that desire. If you want to work with a caterer you absolutely love, ensure the venue will allow for outside catering. How about decor...do you want to transform the space or are you looking for a space that can stand on its own? You also want to consider whether or not you want to have your ceremony and reception in the same place and if you choose separate locations, ensure they aren't too far from one another.
YOU’VE ALREADY GOT THE RING, BUT WHAT ABOUT OTHER BLING?
Traditionally, the bride receives a gift of jewelry from her groom to commemorate their wedding day. Often the gift is earrings or a necklace that can be worn on the day of the wedding. When choosing jewelry to complete your wedding day look, it is important to choose pieces that truly compliment the look but don't overpower. The pieces chosen should fit the style you are looking to achieve be it modern, classic or vintage and we would also recommend choosing pieces that can be worn many times over, providing a reminder of your special day for years to come. Stud earrings and drop pendants are always a safe choice, as are tennis and bangle bracelets. A piece of jewelry with a sapphire is also a nice way to achieve your something blue should you be looking to exercise wedding traditions. You likely will want to stay away from any rings, as your engagement and wedding ring should be the star of the show.

What Kelly Mindell of Studio DIY Learned From a 13-Year-Old
Kids these days are crafty.
DIY is more than project-based crafting-- it’s an attitude, a lifestyle, and according to Kelly Mindell of Studio DIY it's also about making life a party. Born and raised New Jersey, Kelly says she's been a DIY-er since birth and an entrepreneur since 15. She moved to LA in 2011, founded her business the same year, and has put her crafty head and hands to good use since.
Dedicated to a good time, Studio DIY gives readers the kind of excited feeling they had as kids. Think: the moment the piñata broke open and candy rained from the sky. The time you had donuts for dinner. The day you spend running through sprinklers. It's joy in motion.
It's also a lot of work.
We caught up with Kelly to talk biz, what she's learning from younger generations, and the one thing she's bad at (that you'd never, ever expect).
How do you DIY your life?
I've always been one to ask questions and not play by the rules. In high school, I asked if I could do an independent study to build my portfolio instead of spending hours in classes I knew I wouldn't use. In college, I did the same and built Studio DIY during the process! I've always worked tirelessly to make these situations my own and, well, if that's not the true basis of DIY, I don't know what is!
How do you DIY your business?
What I love most about DIY is that it's all about figuring things out and finding a solution, and lord knows that running a business involves figuring things out on the daily. The cool thing about blogging is that no two blogs or business models are the same, so I get to make Studio DIY completely my own... and make things up along the way, too
What was the learning curve for you taking something that was crafty and project-based and scaling it into a business?
Was? How about "is"? Ha! Building and scaling this business is a constant learning curve! DIY blogging takes so many hours, such extensive overhead and so much man-power all while things are changing constantly. I have to learn to grow my revenue, bring on and manage new team members and determine which new avenues for the brand are the right ones to take. And that's all in my spare time!
"DIY blogging takes so many hours, such extensive overhead and so much man-power."

Where do you see the movement heading? Are you interested in getting into the world of AR/VR?
I've noticed that readers, myself included, are placing more and more value on the personality behind the content, versus the content itself. Now that the DIY and blogging markets are so saturated, it's often the person behind the business that people relate to, are interested in or want to build a relationship with. One of the best things I did was start showing and sharing more of myself on my platforms. Sure, I create larger-than-life projects for a living, but I'm also a person... who struggles with infertility, who steps over a pile of clothes to get to her bed, and who really likes watching Teen Mom and eating pizza on a Friday night. It's fun to share those parts of me and build connections with my readers on a much deeper level. And I think that's becoming more important than ever.
What are you learning from the younger generations, especially as it’s related to tech and social media?
So much! I have a growing tween and teen audience and it's been fascinating to learn how differently they consume media. My 13 year old niece helped out at the office over the summer and I quizzed her about everything she knew so I could learn more. YouTube is integral for reaching their generations and that's precisely why we recently launched our YouTube channel.
Life is not a Pinterest board. Can you walk me through the BTS reality-- how much goes into it?
I work around the clock and the work is still never done! Our studio looks like a never-ending craft tornado blew through it. I work with my husband which is rewarding and challenging all at the same time. Most nights our dinner consists of avocado toast eaten on the couch while answering emails. I have certainly not mastered a work life balance, but I know that this is the season to work my hardest so my priorities can shift in the coming years.
How have you grown up as a business woman in the digital scene?
I've gone from being a one-woman show to managing an incredible team. I've also gone from knowing nobody in the industry to now calling my colleagues some of my best friends. Both have been some of the most rewarding experiences in my career, and I am thankful every day for the amazing community of women that surrounds me!
What social platforms are most relevant to your business? Are there platforms you’re more hesitant to grow?
Instagram has been by far the most relevant and important, as far as community building goes. It's where my largest and most interactive audience lives. And Pinterest is integral as far as circulating content and exposing it to new eyeballs each day. It's a big traffic driver. Snapchat has also become far more important to me than I ever expected.
On the flip side, I know I'm not the only one who was thrown for a loop when Instagram Stories launched. On the surface, making the jump from Snapchat back to Instagram seems like a no-brainer (one app, better view counts), but I treat Snapchat very differently than Instagram. Snapchat is my core audience and almost like a built-in focus group. I love having one-on-one conversations over there and posing questions to get real time answers. Yes, I can do that on Instagram Stories too, but the audience is much larger and therefore the response much more overwhelming. It has been nice to have a smaller platform like Snapchat so I can build more intimate relationships. That said, I'm sure I'll find a way to incorporate Stories soon enough!
What parts of your career would you say have expanded your mind the most?
Without a doubt the amazing community that surrounds me, both with fellow bloggers (now friends) and readers. Our community spans the world and it has been so fun, and eye-opening, to learn more about them. About how they learn, what they like, how they range from being 13 to being the grandmother of a 13-year-old. How cool is that!? I love being able to interact with people of all walks of life on a daily basis.
Is there anything you’ve found that you’re just not good at?
Well I have terrible handwriting! Ha! Learning to be a manager has been a huge struggle for me, but as a boss, that's not something that I can just "not be good at" so I'm learning as I go! But the handwriting thing... that's just hopeless!
How do you separate person from brand?
Right now, it's quite a blurred line! Now is the season in life where I am fully immersed in my business and my personal life and business life blend together quite often. However, soon enough the business will be much bigger than myself, and I will be much more fiercely protective over my personal life once there are little ones in the mix!
Your husband Jeff is an integral part of your team. How did you go about building the rest of it?
When I knew it was time to hire someone, I determined two things: what I wasn't good at and what took up the most of my time. Getting what you're bad at off your plate is the most important thing because there's always someone else out there who's good at it. So that was the first major hire I made. Then, when I was in a better financial position, I was able to start taking off the tasks that I was good at, but that took up more time than I had. As the business grows, I continue to look at these two pain points and hire accordingly!

What’s next!
We're putting a lot of effort into our new YouTube channel and we're about to launch the biggest endeavor yet for Studio DIY, but that's all I can say... for now! On the personal side, Jeff and I are excited to start growing our family in the near future and begin a whole new adventure as parents!

Why You Need a #CreateCultivateATL Ticket
We're sharing success stories from past attendees.
We’ve always said that Create & Cultivate is unlike any other conference series and we believe it. No woman is an island and a large part of both creating and cultivating the career of your dreams is connecting with like-minded creatives.
You should take advantage of being in a room with that much creative energy and entrepreneurial spirit. Past attendees who have done just that have made moves.
As we get closer to October 15th we want to make sure you get the most out of the conference. The first step is a ticket, but the next step is all you.
WHEN WE SAY, COME TALK TO US. WE MEAN IT
These aren’t empty words. We put on the conference because it means something to us and we don’t take it lightly that you’re attending. Attendees who catch us in a down moment or come up to us to chat about what they're doing tend to stay top of mind.
Michelle Lando is a is a Certified Professional Resume Writer and founder of writestylesonline.com. She has a passion for helping others present the best version of themselves, both on paper and in person, and works to polish individual's application package and personal style. She attended Create & Cultivate DTLA and approached our editorial director to talk opportunities. She now contributes to the blog, doling out the best tips to enhance your resume, style, and boost your confidence.
We have attendees who become interns and those who now do graphic design for Create & Cultivate. Getting attendees involved beyond the day of is part of the secret to our success. You want people who are enthusiastic about your message. And we want to be able to promote you as well. It's a win-win.
CONNECT WITH YOUR OTHER ATTENDEES
We love hearing from past participants who share their success stories.
Like Melissa Urfirer who also attended Create & Cultivate DTLA this past May. Melissa is a handbag designer with a unique product. She created Riley Versa bags which have removable covers so you can easily change the look of your bag. However, Melissa told us, “the concept is hard to convey.”
But at the past DTLA Melissa met Lizz of Rantze + Raves production. “We exchanged cards. Followed up,” Melissa says, “And she created an incredible stop-motion video that explains the bag and is now the homepage of my website RileyVersa.Com.”
It’s small, but important successes like these that make a ticket a no-brainer. Connections are hard to come by, but not at Create & Cultivate.
CREATE EVERY OPPORTUNITY
It's not just for CEOs. It's for you and the person next to you. It's also why we have mentor sessions.
Kamari Guthrie was in C&C mentor extraordinaire Maxie McCoy's session and had this to say: "The mentor session at Create & Cultivate gave me the moment I'd been hoping for all day: the moment when I made deep, real connections that were bound to extend well into my professional future. By the end of the session, I found a photographer that would take my social media to the next level and an amazing friend (Maxie, of course). It's only been a few months since that session, and both of them have already collaborated with me on projects that helped make my latest PR project a major success. And, I was thrilled to be able to give them new business opportunities through my network. It was a total win/win, and I cannot wait for Atlanta where I'm now 100% sure I'll build more game-changing relationships."
So. What are you waiting for? There are only a few VIP tickets left.

Sugar & Cloth's Ashley Rose Talks DIY, Dream Collabs, and Dedication
Sugar and cloth and everything boss.
Ashley Rose of Sugar & Cloth is all about serious DIY. So much so that she got to create a Sugar & Cloth color wall in Houston (see above) that has been the site of some serious 'gramming.
One look at the website that she launched in September 2011 after leaving Marshall University where she studied Art & Design, moving to Houston and following her dreams, you'll quickly find the injection of color she's put into the blogosphere was much needed. The blogger self-admittedly takes a lot of coffee and macaroon breaks, but she's also the proof in the blog pudding that committing to an idea is sometimes the best idea of all.
We caught up with Ashley in anticipation of Create & Cultivate ATL where she'll be joining us on panel to chat all things craft, creativity, and DIY-why not.
Was there a project where you thought, this is impossible but I’m going to try! And it turned out?
Being a DIY blog, I have A LOT of these, haha! It’s a good mix of trying to reinvent the wheel but it either turns as: a literal pile of trash, pretty but much harder than I anticipated, or it turns out amazing and I even surprise myself!
What lessons have you learned from DIY’ing? That apply to life?
That you’ll win some, you’ll lose some, and everyone is going to have an opinion. What really counts is that you’re honest and true to yourself about the outcome, whatever it is.
"You’ll win some, you’ll lose some, and everyone is going to have an opinion."

DIY is more than a craft-- it’s a choice, a frame of mind-- to do it yourself. What other parts of your life are about “doing it yourself?”
I think in general DIY is simply a frame of mind that speaks independence for whatever you’re creating, doing, or achieving.
What parts of your life do you let go of the reigns a little bit?
Outside of work decisions, I’m actually much more go with the flow, ha! When it comes to where we eat, who drives, what our weekend plans are. I’m pretty much game for whatever as long as deadlines have been met. We definitely make it a point to spend time with friends and family each week.
When you first got started you were working on your blog full time and had a full time job. What have you learned about balance and pursuing your passion?
It’s funny how working multiple jobs seems super exhausting to some people, but once you’ve done it, you learn really quickly how to process through what absolutely needs to get done first. It really helps you prioritize, because you essentially have no choice not to if you’re going to do two jobs well. In some ways I’d say I was even more productive with my time back then. It’s easy to get lost in little details when time allows.
What would you say to women in the same boat right now? Even as simple as how many hours is reasonable to put in?
My best advice is to say — Don’t sweat the small stuff. Whether that means not letting an unkind comment get to you, moving on from a failed DIY, or letting go of the struggle to get it all done before bedtime. It’s not worth spending your energy on worrying about things unnecessarily.
What’s your favorite part of working in a creative field?
Always getting to dream up the next new thing!
Do you ever run out of DIY-ideas? What happens when you’re coming up empty?
I definitely struggle in A LOT of small business areas (hello, accounting and all things taxes), but running out of ideas thankfully isn’t one of them. When I do start to feel complacent with some ideas, I try to just move on to one I am excited about to get the good juju flowing again.
When you live a Pinterest-looking lifestyle, it can be hard to keep up appearances, or have everything look curated all of the time. What are some of the BTS difficulties?
First world problems, am I right?! Ha! It’s definitely super easy for me to get burnt out on social media for that reason, or even just have the constant feeling of keeping up with the Joneses because it’s my entire job basically. I think every online personality feels that at some point, but at the end of the day I think the most important reminder is to not think more highly of yourself than you ought to.
Where do you see the blog world evolving?
It’s basically a new generation of free reality TV! Or at least I keep pretty entertained by it ;)
I don’t think the blog world has hit it’s prime yet, but it’s definitely getting quickly saturated. To keep up at this point, you really have to hustle and be a forward thinker to make it a longstanding career move instead of becoming an overnight, internet one-hit-wonder.
Dream collab?
A product line with Target or Amazon!
How important is your Instagram game? Is Snapchat part of your social strategy and how are you using it?
Instagram has become a huge part of our business. Within the last year it’s come super close to being our highest earning platform, and we’ve now started focusing a lot more on Snapchat for the sake of feeling more real. It may or may not take off like IG, but it’s a great tool for followers to see a real, everyday you without the Pinterest-esque smoke and mirrors.
What’s the messiest room in your house/What is your favorite?
Messiest is definitely my closet! My favorite would be my bedroom, I LOVE a good Saturday sleeping in.

What does Sugar & Cloth mean to you?
It’s an attainable place for everyday inspiration. And even if I won the lottery tomorrow, I’d still be making pretty things to share there. You know it’s a passion project when you’d be there regardless of your circumstances.

What Do Your Jewelry Choices Say About You As an Employee?
You don't need bling to be a boss.
Ever wonder what your jewelry choices say about you as an employee? Whether you’re slaying Keynote proposals in a statement necklace or you’re a simple bangle kind of boss, we’re breaking down jewelry choices and work styles with Simon G. Jewelry.
There is a rapport between what you put on and how you go about your day.
THE STRAIGHT SHOOTER IN THE SIMPLE BANGLE
A simple bangle says you like to get into the office early and clear out your inbox ASAP. It’s a no-fuss approach to business and dressing that says, I bang that drum, but with a bangle that doesn’t get in the way.
With an arresting intertwined design of white and rose gold and white diamonds, you’re also a bit of a dreamer who takes chances by bending the rules a little bit. You’re not afraid to mix metals and you’re certainly not afraid of mixing it up in the conference room, stating your ideas with confidence; two-tone means you’ve got ideas in every hue.
THE GO-GETTER IN THE CLIMBER EARRINGS
Call it a hike, a journey, or a climb, you’re all about getting to the top. But as dedicated as you are about going after your dreams, you also make sure to reach down and to the side as you go.
These climber diamond earrings mean you’re a go-getter, you want to be noticed, and you make a statement with both your earrings and your handshake: firm and no-nonsense.
You know that not everything you do will be a success but that never stops you from trying.
You like talking strategy and growth with your team and you’re constantly brainstorming innovative ideas for expansion. In 18k white gold with floral pattern you’re classic but crafty and nothing will hold you back.
"You’re classic but crafty and nothing will hold you back."

THE WORKER BEE IN THE SIMPLE DIAMOND PENDANT
You work out at 6am. Are in the office by 8:30, and you’ve corresponded with more people before noon than most people do in a day. You’re practical, fast, and you like jewelry that you don’t have to think about— but know is always looking stunning.
This is the kind of necklace you can wear morning, noon, and night. In part because you’re always heading from the office to work drinks!
You never have to take it off (and you often don’t). Don’t underestimate it’s simplicity for simpleness. This necklace works hard for you and you need something that works like you do: around-the-clock.
Like they say: you want something done, give it to a busy person.
THE OFFICE UNICORN IN THE RIGHT HAND RING
You are always there to jump in, take on a challenge head-on, and come up with ideas that benefit the whole team. If someone is out sick, you’re helping.
If a co-worker is hitting a wall with creative ideas, you’re staying behind to spitball. You’re a true right hand to everyone in the company and it’s an attitude that doesn’t go unnoticed. It has helped you advance your position in the past and will continue to do so.
This spiral ring is comfortable and resilient due to the design of tiny, almost unnoticeable joints in the solid 18k rose gold design. Which mirrors your personality precisely. The diamonds add a bit of sparkle— just like you add to the workplace.
