You'll Never Guess What This Top Blogger Says Is More Valuable Than Being #1

"I am the opposite of an overnight success."

Before Live Journal, there was Open Diary. A platform that OG, now Brooklyn-based blogger Keiko Lynn, used as a personal outlet. Today her blog KeikoLynn.com is a space where the self-proclaimed "restless adventurer" shares her take on fashion, beauty, and her daily life.

We caught up with Keiko to chat all things  influencer and why you have to be willing to put in the time, without any immediate return.

After more than decade in the blogosphere (shout out to your 1999 Open Diary) how have you been able to stay true to yourself?

Since the primary focus of my blog started out as a personal diary, it's actually pretty difficult to not stay true to myself. I named my blog "Keiko Lynn" before I ever intended for it to be more than just a personal outlet, but it still maintains that personal feeling. If I ever strayed from my true self, I'd have a lot of friends and family and loyal readers to answer to.

You didn’t set out to build a brand, but that’s what you’ve done. How do you feel about person as brand? Did you ever have any hesitation?

It happened so gradually that I didn't really contemplate it, before or as it was happening. I am the opposite of an overnight success. It was little things here and there, starting with blogging for Cingular when I was on LiveJournal, or having a magazine featuring me in a photo shoot, etc. I would just think of them as solitary opportunities that I couldn't pass up, not as stepping stones in my career path. It was years before it became a career, and by that time, "Keiko Lynn" had been my online (and real life, of course) identity for long enough that I didn't think I should change it. I still don't think of myself as a brand. I never think, "Is this on brand for me?" I just know what I do and do not like; I know myself

"I never think, 'Is this on brand for me?' I just know what I do and do not like; I know myself."

Do you consider yourself an early adaptor? What are some other important traits to have as a blogger and influencer?

When I started my current blog, I was a young and perpetually broke independent clothing designer, so everything I wore was handmade or from a thrift store, and most of my photos were taken with a self timer. That was what blogging was like, back then. We were remixing what we had in our closets. Now, we have bloggers who are starting out with a whole creative team behind them; they're coming in with photographers, beautiful web design, and a closet full of current, contemporary and designer clothing. I think that's amazing, and if you have the wherewithal or creative contacts to start a blog as a legitimate business platform, why not?! That's what's so cool about modern blogging -- you don't always have to go through the awkward growing stages that many of us went through. But I probably wouldn't have had a fighting chance, with my wide-angled, self-timer photos and second-hand clothing, if I weren't one of the early adopters. Even now that I have an actual closet (I didn't, back then), at least half of what I wear is vintage or thrifted...and I still take many of my own photos.  I'm in a very particular niche, and I'm well aware that I was lucky to have early exposure.

The most important trait to have as a blogger is tenacity. I've known many people who started blogging and gave up after awhile, when they didn't see immediate growth. Overnight success stories usually only look like overnight successes. You have to be willing to put in the time without any immediate return, and keep going until you build yourself a base. It will come, but you have to keep going.

"You have to be willing to put in the time without any immediate return."

What are some shifts you’ve been hesitant to adopt, but eventually jumped on board?

I am famous for being late to just about every social media platform. My very first tweet was something along the lines of, "Let's see how long this lasts..."

Do you ever feel like, enough! No more apps, no more sharing, I can’t possibly add one more “must” to my social lineup?

I feel like that almost every day of my life. I drew the line at Periscope. I won't do another one...I can't!! Although Instagram just added their very Snapchat-like feature, and I might end up giving that a try. I'm trying not to be the last one for that.

We’ve talked to a few bloggers about unexpected difficulties and the BTS realities, but what are some BTS unexpected joys?

I have made some wonderful friends through blogging, whether bloggers, readers, or people in the fashion and beauty industry. When I moved to NYC, I barely knew anyone. I had one friend and a LiveJournal friend, and my roommate and I had only met a few times before living together. Making friends in a new city is so difficult, and the blogging world really opened me up to a whole community.

How do you come up with creative ideas?

With style, I look to the past. With makeup, I look to both the past and the runways. But mostly, I just garner inspiration from everyday life, whether it's someone I pass in the streets or a page from a current read.

What’s a business aphorism you live by/what’s one you don’t think rings true anymore?

As trite as it sounds to "stay true to yourself," it's something I live by in both work and in my personal life. But I also think it's important to let yourself evolve naturally; the two are not mutually exclusive. 31 year old me is not exactly the same as 19 year old me. Part of staying true to yourself is allowing yourself room to grow and evolve. What doesn't ring true anymore is that you have to always be number one. Staying power can be just as valuable.

"What doesn't ring true anymore is that you have to always be number one. Staying power can be just as valuable."

What do you think you’d be doing without the advent of social media?

I think about this often, because when you're in this sort of career, you have to be on your toes. What if it all went away, tomorrow -- what would I do? I imagine I would go back to my roots and start a new clothing line or invest in starting a makeup line, which is something I've always dreamed of doing.

How do you feel about the term influencer?

What do you think is the future of influencer? I prefer the term when referring to other people, and don't mind when others use it to describe me -- but referring to myself as an influencer feels strange and boastful. The truth is, we're all influencers in some way. Some just have a larger audience.

Why Gloria Steinem Told the Audience at Create & Cultivate NYC "We are woke."

The icon is unstoppable.

On Saturday evening, to a crowd of hundreds of empowered women (and a few dudes) feminist icon Gloria Steinem took the Create & Cultivate stage. Over the next 40 minutes, Steinem, in conversation with fellow famous feminist Amy Richards, chatted everything from The Golden Rule to aging to finding your path, and why now, even in what she called the face of a disastrous Trump presidency, she considers herself a forever "hope-a-colic."

Read through for our favorite takeaways from the woman who shaped the women's movement.

1. YOU CAN BE ADDICTED TO THE GOOD STUFF.

The 83-year-old icon, who started her career writing under a man's name, told the C&C audience that she's a "hope-a-holic."

"I hope we're beginning to approach the end of one structure and the beginning of another," she said in regards to the Trump administration. Adding, "When it's no longer universally human, it's political." Therein lies the motivational rub to get moving and get political.

2. AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER.

When an audience member stood up to ask the trailblazer what she would tell her 15-year-old self, Steinem laughed and said that though age changes, the person inside does not. "You can't live in future," she shared. "Hello, you can only live in the present. We only have our five senses in the present."

Adding, “Here's the secret of age: You’re still the same person, but after you hit 50 or 60, you’re free like you were when you were a little girl." Joking, "Except now you have money, and your own apartment.”

3. NO ONE IS TRULY ALONE.

As a woman with a self-actualized career, Steinem never married, never had children, but surrounded herself with a sea of motivated women (including Amy Richards, who shared the stage with Steinem and worked with her on the Viceland series "Woman").

"Being an organizer is being an entrepreneur of social change," Steinem said. "But the more you tell your story, your dreams, and your entrepreneurial hopes, the more you will see that you're not alone in either your striving or your doubts. You will be better able to move forward by sharing."

4. WOMEN NEED TO REVERSE THE GOLDEN RULE.

Though she said that men need to follow The Golden Rule (treat others as you wish to be treated), Steinem said that women need to do the opposite. "We need to treat ourselves the way we would treat other people," she told the millennial audience. It's that simple. Be kind to yourself.

5. SHE'S FOUND THE GOOD IN THE FACE OF THE CURRENT ADMIN.

Steinem might have dubbed the current administration "a disaster," but she also said the sitting President is "a big-time consciousness raiser." (How's that for a hope-a-holic?) Bringing up the historical Women's March on Washington, Steinem said, "It was the first protest led by women that was joined by men." She also urged the women in the audience to, "Be honest. Speak the truth."

6. SPEAKING OF MEN, SHE'S NOT DISCOUNTING THEM FROM THE CONVO. (But she does want to change it for them.)

Steinem might have called the masculine experience a "prison" and "bonkers," but she also said that it is vital that we show males "the path to empathy." Noting that feminism benefits all people.

"They’re not supposed to show emotion or admit failure. It’s crazy and it shortens your life." She continued, "Show the ways in which it [feminism] is good for men. It lengthens their lives." She also said we need to "humanize the masculine role which is killing men. It’s not about asking for sacrifice, it’s about showing compassion. It is possible to go forward in a different way, and I think we are."

7. SHE CALLED UPON EVERYONE TO FIND THE COMMON THREAD IN OUR HUMAN EXPERIENCE.

The "patriarchal, hierarchical, bullshit," as Steinem calls it, has only been around for about 500 years. The social activist, who often cites indigenous cultures in her talks spoke of a time when, "People were linked. They were not ranked. Women controlled their own bodies. Languages didn’t have he and she. People were people. There was not a concept of ownership."

Scene & Overhead: Exclusive BTS of Our Kickoff Create & Cultivate NYC Brunch

The conference was a smashing success. But first, we brunched.

We kicked off our magical #createcultivateNYC week with a boss brunch in the city thanks to our friends at Tinder. There's nothing quite like coffee, mimosas, and stacks of Little Park pancakes to get the conversation going.

Create & Cultivate CEO and founder, Jaclyn Johnson, kicked off the morning festivities with a personal tidbit-- the newlywed met her (now) husband on Tinder. Which, of course, brought up the changing times and success stories!

Lauren Probyn, Tinder's Director of Marketing Events, chatted about the increasing rate of success stories and how the company is starting to see the first wave of what they've dubbed "Tinder Tots." (AKA kids born to Tinder matches.)

Naomi Hirabayashi, co-founder of Shine, which recently announced it's surpassed half a million users in its 1-year and finished a successful 2.5 million dollar seed round, has seen the firsthand benefits of making wellbeing accessible. (Interpersonal relationships being an integral part of the well-being train.) "I think we're at a tipping point in society," she said to the table, which included Forbes' Emily Drewry and Olivia Rose Wright, founder of Rallier. "The old model of meeting a person ONE way was so isolating. It's now more in your power to figure out what you want."

"The old model of meeting a person ONE way was so isolating. It's now in your power to figure out what you want."

Tweet this.

Speaking about figuring out what you want, Brand Strategist and Maude co-founder, Eva Goicochea shared a bit of advice. "My mom always used to say, 'your job doesn't exist yet.'" Noting that we don’t know what the future of the workplace looks like (so look out!)

Florals from Urban Stems adorned the tables where NYC-based blogger Rach Martino joked about Twitter's emergence as a comedic platform, noting that her boyfriend and his friends screenshot tweets and send them back and forth. "It's like the guys version of Instagram," she laughed.

And NYC-based blogger Noelle Downing dropped this little anecdote about dealing with the ever-changing blog world. "I was in Germany and did an Instagram Live from a hot tub wearing a bathing suit," she said. During the Live Steam there were plenty of commenters throwing shade about how the brunette beauty shouldn't be live streaming in a bikini. Post-stream, Noelle said she received lots of DMs from her followers asking, how she deals with rude comments. She told them, "I don't spend my time on negativity."

We call that something to toast to.

Be sure to click through the above gallery to see all the gorgeous images from the event!

ETW: One Last Shot to Attend C&C NYC

We're offering attendees the chance to bring their BFF and #livegenerously.

Create & Cultivate isn’t just another conference. Sure, there’s networking and learning. There are mic drops left and right. Our speakers lay down the truth when it comes to the ups and downs of running a business, how they’ve learned from their mistakes, restructured strategies, mitigate the crazy world of social, and make every day count.

They pay it forward, entrepreneurial style.

And it’s a day where you get to grab the bull by the horns. Some people roll solo. Others roll with their BFF or biz partner at their side. But everyone comes to get inspired, collaborate, and create relationships that count.

So if you’re rolling to C&C NYC, here are a few of hacks we recommend.

PRINT OUT THOSE BUSINESS CARDS

Get ready to shake hands. Lots of hands. And despite what you might think, business cards are still an amazing way to make a great first impression. A speaker or mentor will be way more likely to take your card than they will put your info in their phone. There are a lot of people to meet and being aware is part of the networking game.

HASHTAG #CREATECULTIVATENYC & SHOUTOUT TO OTHER ATTENDEES

Want to take this a step further? Search the hashtag and DM people who are also attending. See someone you want to meet up with? Go for it. This is the new frontier. Be bold and be brave. It will make your day more meaningful.

FOR THOSE BRAVE SOLO ROLLERS -- NOMINATE A FRIEND TO COME WITH

We see you and we love you for making the investment in you. Which is why we want to give you the opportunity to bring your BFF along. We know it’s not easy to network. So with the help of our friends at Crown Royal, we’re offering you the opportunity to #creategenerously and nominate a friend to join you for the day. Those entrepreneurs aren’t the only ones who get to pay it forward.

Here’s how it works:

Crown Royal, AKA the world’s most generous whisky, is offering you the chance to win a VIP ticket for a friend to attend #CreateAndCultivateNYC with you! If you’re 21+ live in the Tri-State area and have purchased a GA ticket, comment on our Instagram here,  and tag a powerful and independent friend who wants to attend using #Contest. To enter for a chance to win them a VIP ticket because you’re the best friend they’ve ever had.

Quick & Easy Spring Must Haves for On-the-Go Women

You're busy. So we got you.

Spring is officially here! And we’re sprung. But we’re also crazy busy with work travel plans, meetings on meetings on meetings, and still trying to make time to get out in the sunshine.

And since we know you’re busy too, here are three quick travel tips for on-the-go women.

1. PROTECT THE SKIN YOU’RE IN

You need to put your best face forward but lets face it, tons of travel plus an onslaught of environmental aggressors can leave your skin a little worse for wear. So, while it’s hard to have it all IRL, you can at least have it all when it comes to your moisturizer.

Enter: A Perfect World collection from Origins. This line is designed to provide the most comprehensive protection against environmental stress, including new skin damaging stressors like infrared rays (IR) which makes up 50% of all light and penetrates deeper into skin than UV to cause protein damage, oxidative stress and free radical generation, all leading to accelerated aging.

"It's hard to have it all IRL,  you can at least have it all when it comes to your moisturizer."

Our favorite (And what we gave away to the amazing speakers at #CreateCultivateSXSW): A Perfect World SPF 40 Age-Defense Moisturizer with White Tea, which is Origins highest SPF moisturizer. It’s a super-charged, oil-free moisturizer that delivers instant hydration with SPF 40 for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Better yet, the essential oils within eliminate any kind of traditional SPF odor. Need it!

Even better? It doesn’t feel like a sunscreen either! Goes on smooth and lasts all day, harnessing the powerful benefits of Silver Tip White Tea, Edelweiss, and White Birch to help protect skin on multiple levels and create a barrier that defends skin from harsh environmental stressors you can’t control, like pollution and UV. Helping you prevent premature signs of aging before they start. After all, it’s not a perfect world, but at least your skin can live in one!

If you want to radiate this spring, A Perfect World should be your go-to.

2. TRAVEL IN STYLE

Up in the air is part of the job nowadays. Thank goodness for in-flight wifi! Also, thank the travel gods that our favorite luggage ladies at Away teamed up the women at Pop & Suki to create this Away suitcase in Pop & Suki’s signature pink with contrasting black accents. No one will mistake their bag for yours ever again!

With all the traditional perks of Away: 360-degree spinning wheels, a scratch-resistant shell and even a built-in USB charger. The suitcase caters to the needs of all travellers, coming in four different sizes.

Quick reminder: YES! You should even wear SPF when up in the air. Airplane windows don’t filter out the sun’s UV rays. Especially if you’re a frequent flier clocking 20k+ miles per year. Think of it this way: the higher you go, the closer you are to the sun. Moisturize before and during your ride if it’s longer than three hours.

And if you feel like snoozing on the plane, you can rest easy knowing that A Perfect World SPF 20 Age-Defense Eye Cream with White Tea, Origins first-ever SPF eye cream, will hydrate, brighten, and help protect against environmental stressors even while in the air. Plus, with a universally flattering hint of tint, you know you’ll wake up looking refreshed and ready to go. That’s what we call pulling overtime.#professional.

3. THE GAME-CHANGING HAIR DRYER

From the company that actually managed to vacuum your dog’s hair out of your couch, comes a hair dryer that’s even more impressive (and small enough to pack in your carry-on). Dyson re-thought the hair dryer, giving the trusted tool a much-needed 2017 update.

The Dyson Supersonic is fast-drying (a must for busy ladies), protects your hair from damage with tech that measures the tool’s temp 20 times per second, is engineered for balance so it won’t weigh your arm down, and did we mention it’s sound is inaudible? Yes, it’s virtually silent. So you can dry your hair just about anywhere. It’s a futuristic hair tool for right now.

How to Food Prep for Your Work Week

So tasty.

Don’t get bummed out by the Sunday night back-to-work blues. Get ahead of the game instead. Studies show that successful people PREP for their week with a few key habits: concentrating on the positive, taking an hour to organize their calendar, and mapping out their meals. That’s right.

When you map your meals on Sunday, you have a more productive Monday. And that attitude carries through your week.

So with a little recipe prep help from our friends at Hormel Foods, we’ve gathered some great recipes and ideas to get your through the week.

SKIPPING LUNCH IS BAD FOR YOUR BRAIN… AND BUSINESS

Skipping lunch to get more work done is never a good idea. Your body and brain shut down when you don’t eat. Instead of stressing through your lunch hour, only to order something unhealthy and fast at the last minute, opt for prep instead.

You wouldn’t walk into a major meeting unprepared, so why would you do that to your own body?

The Natural Choice® brand has so many amazing lunch options. From DIY Bento Lunches that are low calorie, high-fuel for on-the-go working women, to protein-packed, Sonoran Power Taco Bowls for powerhouse ladies, and more, you can pack a lunch filled with  that will also have your taste buds melting with joy. For more ideas check out all of The Natural Choice® brand recipe options.

EATING EVERY TWO TO FOUR HOURS HELPS KEEP YOU ALERT

Any time you go longer than five hours without eating, your energy crashes. And crashes hard. Especially when your brain is working overtime in a go-go-get-‘em office environment.

If your blood sugar drops, so does your productivity, which is why keeping healthy snacks on hand  a great way to power through those 3pm conference calls. Meat, cheese, and almonds snacks boost brain power and replenish energy. Hormel Foods offers four great snackable options to keep on hand and keep you firing on all cylinders. Or opt for their Hormel Gatherings® Culinary Pairings for an array of salamis, cheeses, pecans, walnuts, and almonds. Or bring a Hormel Gatherings® party tray for the whole office. Food is universal perk and it will not only boost your morale, but company morale as well.

GATHER YOUR CO-WORKERS & INDULGE A BIT

Many studies show that small reward-based incentives will keep you on track through the work week. So you should enjoy indulgences where you can-- even better if you can share with your co-workers as well. And who doesn’t love a little chip and guac action? When rushing out the door in the AM, grab a Wholly Guacamole® Mini Guacamole for your lunch or pure and simple Wholly Guacamole® Classic Guacamole Tray to share with your coworkers during a brainstorm. We’ve heard avocados and their omegas are good for that…

What are some other ways you stay on track during the workweek? Share your favorite at-home prep recipes below!

How These 5 Women Are Fighting Gender Bias in Hollywood

Don't ask for permission.

For 16 years LUNA has been promoting women storytellers with LUNAFEST. Every year they program and travel with 6-8 short films, bringing awareness in different cities to female directors. They also partner with local women’s non-profits in the cities where films screen to raise money for local charities.

And last Sunday at #CreateCultivateSXSW, in keeping with the spirit of the day and LUNAFEST, four amazing female storytellers took to the stage to talk about the realities for women directors in Hollywood. They were introduced by Suzy Starke German, the brand marketing manager for LUNAFEST, who told the audience "About two years ago we decided we wanted to look at the careers of the filmmakers who had toured their films through LUNAFEST.” The company also partnered with USC’s Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative to complete a study about women in film. "Like in many areas, women directors are underrepresented,” said Starke German, bringing to the stage Mynette Louie, President of Gamechanger Films, an equity fund that exclusively finances women directed narrative features.

Joining them on stage were: Jennifer Brea, director of “Unrest,” a first time documentary filmmaker who used the medium to explore her personal medical journey, Rachel Holder, the writer and director of “I Love Bekka and Lucy,” a female friendship comedy which is the first digital series to be accepted into SXSW, and Kim Sherman, a production executive with Stage 13 representing “I Love Bekka and Lucy,” at the festival.

The women candidly discussed their journeys and where they feel the conversation (and action) needs to go.

1. DON’T ASK FOR PERMISSION

She’s from a little town in the Midwest but Kim Sherman told the audience, “I don’t think I ever thought, ‘I can’t do this’ or ‘I shouldn’t do this.’ I just started making movies. Every feature seemed to lead to the next. Eventually, thanks to amazing women like Mynette, I was recommended for this new digital initiative, Stage 13.” Stage 13 specifically works to support emerging artists in underrepresented communities-- “women being part of that,” she shared.

Rachael Holder got her start with an MFA from NYU/Tisch. “After graduation I wrote a lot of scripts, but no one was reading me. So I decided to not wait for permission and I made a web series. That web series was purchased by WB. With that platform I created ‘I Love Bekka and Lucy,’” she explained.  “The beginning of my creative process was creating these characters, because I wanted to have a walking resume. Something people could click on and get two-minutes of content, hear my voice, and hear my POV. That’s how you do it, it works.”

Nodding to Holder’s narrative about how she got her start, Brea picked up on the theme of permission. “I think ‘permission’ is a big theme about how women get their start. Who are the gatekeepers and do you need to ask for permission? For me, I was pursuing a totally different path in life. I was an academic, it was a safe path— but I had a strong impulse to tell a story that I really cared about and believed that it had to be visual that I had the idea to make a documentary. I think it’s because I had reached a place where I was so sick, I had lost everything, there was nothing left to lose. It was from that place that I felt I could take the risk.”

“Make your art without asking for permission,” Brea encouraged.

2. DON’T KNOW WHERE TO GET FUNDS? KICKSTARTER ACTUALLY WORKS

Both Jen Brea and Rachael Holder relied on Kickstarter to launch their projects.

For the first “I Love Bekka and Lucy” vignettes, Holder used Kickstarter, relying on friends and family for donations. She made a web series with 5k.

“I also relied on Kickstarter,” shared Brea. “It was essentially me asking the audience, ‘Do you want this film?’ And they said, ‘Yes,’ in a resounding way.” Her project raised over $200,000 on Kickstarter. “Had it not been for that I don’t think anyone would have given me permission to make this film.” Kickstarter also allowed Brea to believe that it was a story people wanted to hear and that it mattered.

3. WHAT ABOUT THAT HOLLYWOOD GENDER BIAS?

Holder, who writes about women a lot, said she doesn’t feel restricted by the kind of subject matter she can touch. She does admit: “In terms of my female characters that have empowering sex, it sometimes feels like there’s an expectation to make that character fucked up in some way. ‘She’s craa-azy, she likes orgasms.’ I like to fight against that."

“‘She’s craa-azy, she likes orgasms.’ I like to fight against that.”

Sherman, who got her start in the horror genre shared that she never felt restricted but she did feel alone. “I was often the only woman on set, aside from the actors. We would bond with each other because we were in a very male-dominated genre. It was interesting to go to festivals because I felt like my role in things was often overlooked or diminished. For me, that was really frustrating. As someone who champions filmmakers and directors, I noticed the difference in reception I would get when going out with a female fronted project vs. the projects that were attached to a male director. The men seems to be more free to experiment and more free to come to the table with something that was their voice and vision. Where women, depending on the distributor, there were a lot more concessions to what they could make and a lot more notes. No matter what their background was or what they’d already accomplished there was a tendency to want to tell them ‘how it is in the industry.’”

Brea who admitted she is “new to this,” said that in some ways she’s “happily naive.”

Sharing: “I know there are institutional barriers, but in some ways you can’t think about that. You have to hold onto the belief that you can do anything. That type of ownership of the world is the privilege of being a man, but it’s something that I think we as women storytellers need to own. But talk to me in ten years.”

4. ONLY 4% OF DIRECTORS ARE WOMEN

The EOC has found that Hollywood is guilty of discrimination. But just what can women in Hollywood do about it?

“Studies and numbers are on our side now,” said Sherman. “It’s not just anecdotal anymore. I think that’s the first step, but it has to be acknowledged at the higher levels. That science has to be felt. I think about this a lot. It would be amazing if even to start— every time a male project was greenlit for millions and millions of dollars, a female project was also greenlit for millions and millions of dollars. Apples to apples. Let’s get women in these major roles.”

"Women outnumber men going into film school, so why is that not translating to higher jobs? Where along the way are we losing?” asked Sherman. “How do we make sure people at the beginning of their careers have access to audience? If you going to give hundreds of millions of dollars to men, do it for women too. Let’s start there.”

For Holder, this was a point to bring up the importance of intersectionality. “We need more female directors and storytellers, but we also need to have women of color be a part of the conversation too. Not only not male, but I’m also not white and damn,” said Holder.

All women agreed that the conversation needed to be much more inclusive and is a conversation has been brewing for a long time.

Mynette also brought up the point that, "Women are expected to only direct other women.” But pointed out, “A woman inhabiting the male perspective is as feminist and apt as directing a female protagonist.”

20 Amazing Mic Drops from C&C Keynotes

How about that #MondayMotivation.

We're still riding the wave of Create & Cultivate SXSW and sharing 20 of our favorite moments from last week's popup featuring keynotes: Brit Morin, Brooklyn Decker and Whitney Casey, Hannah Hart and Mamrie Hart, and Kristen Bell.

Enjoy and pass on to a friend who needs a boost!

"I put my name in it because I want people know I'm real about this. I'm a real person. When you Tweet me, I'm gonna Tweet you back. When you Instagram I'm gonna Instagram you back. It's not a brand just trying to be a brand." Brit Morin on incorporating herself into the company.

“I don’t think women brag about themselves enough.” Brit Morin on being a powerful woman in charge.

“Cooperation over domination is going to be the cure.” Kristen Bell on what will move the business needle forward.

“Investors want to invest in people.” Brooklyn Decker on being yourself in meetings and believing in yourself.

“To know your differentiators you have to know the marketplace. Do you research.” Whitney Casey on how to enter VC meetings.

“Be incredibly well-researched on the market that you’re entering. Understand it so well and it will help you prepare for any meeting.” Brooklyn Decker on how to enter VC meetings.

“If I were a young woman right now I would learn how to code.” Whitney Casey on how we change the male-dominated tech world.

“Beyoncé, she’s our user, she’s our girl.” Brooklyn Decker on her Finery dream user.

"Good ideas spread, they're the best infections." Kristen Bell

"We want to work, but we also want to create." Brit Morin on the impetus of Brit+Co.

"You can kick down the door but you better be ready to fight when you get in there." Mamrie Hart on breaking down barriers (and kicking down doors above).

"You can kick down the door but you better be ready to fight when you get in there."

"If you try to please your audience you're not being your authentic self." Marie Hart.

"When I would start to cry I would run to the bathroom to study it." Mamrie Hart on being an 8-year-old asking for an agent.

"We're literally two girls with the last name Hart who started our YouTube channels in the exact same month drinking and making puns and we literally still don't feel competitive. So, there's enough room for everyone." Mamrie Hart on female competition and how she, Hannah, and third "Holy Trinity" member Grace Helbig really do support each other offline.

"We focus so much on being pitted against each other, but we don't think about the social construct that has put us in the pit. That's the thing we should get together and try and change." Hannah Hart on women supporting women.

"It's intention into action. If you're intention is to get a lot of views and be famous, you can study all the strategies and compromise your values, but it might not work. So wouldn't it be better to make something you're proud of?" Hannah Hart of content creators breaking into the crowded space of social.

"Ask for what you want." Mamrie Hart. Keeping it simple and smart.

"This year especially, I just want to be around strong women. And I really want to focus on me and my girls going for it as hard as we can right now. I'm 33 and I really want to hit it hard right now. People are like, 'This is when you freeze your eggs,' and I'm like, 'No, this is when I get a frozen margarita with my bitches.' I feel like women right now need to come together." Mamrie Hart on the "Pussy Posse 2017" bracelets she gave to her friends.

"In this 'climate' I'm worried that we're so focused on protecting our individual 'I's' that we're not listening to other people's 'we's.'' Hannah Hart on the need to be inclusive.

"I believe our give back is the reason we are so successful." Kristen Bell on why she believes in This Bar Saves Lives and why she thinks social responsibility is the move.

3 Amazing Must-Read Tips for Brides-to-Be

It's wedding season ladies.

The weather in Austin was a little damp, but the vibe at the Simon G. Jewelry Happy Hour at Create & Cultivate SXSW was on fire. In part because of the dynamic energy of the room and the gorgeous jewels on display. But also, we had a S’mores bar y’all.

Allure editor-in-chief, Michelle Lee and Jessy Fofana of La Rue PR were in FULL convo mode, chatting everything fashion and business, but also bonded over their mutual love of  beloved NYC nail salon Paintbox. Taking the weather into consideration, both NY-based ladies smartly paired their smashing outfits with chic sneakers.

Founder of May Designs Mica May, Ashely Rose of Sugar & Cloth, and local designer Claire Zinnecker, who designed the Simon G. custom booth at the conference, couldn’t stop taking Boomerangs. Mamrie Hart, Hannah Hart and Grace Helberg cheersed their delicious custom Crown Royal cocktails. Guests were given three signature cocktail choices: To Rye For, SXSW Deluxe, and Vanilla So Smooth. (Recipes here.)

Austin-based fashion blogger Olivia Watson of Livvyland marveled at the sparkles. Jessy and Claire also couldn’t stop trying on the gorgeous jewelry that was on display.

But the toast of the evening was digital darling Jenn Im and her new (!!) finacé Ben who chatted with Simon G.’s  VP of Marketing and Communication, Brooke Brinkman about their upcoming nuptials. Brinkman, a wealth of knowledge when it comes to tying the knot, shared everything in her wedding wheelhouse. She’s a pro at picking wedding venues. Jenn was beyond excited to soak it all in. And now Brooke’s sharing with us!

Below are three of her best tips for brides-to-be.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOVECATION

Is there a place that holds sentimental value for you as a couple or your family?  If not, perhaps there is a place that appeals to your style and personality.  The location of your wedding will hold significance for the rest of your life, so it is important to choose something that is special or can be special for years to come. If there is not a place that appeals to your personality or holds sentimental value, then we would recommend you choose based on ease of travel for you and your guests.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT VENUE

Obviously you want to choose a venue that will accommodate your guest list, but size shouldn't be the only criteria you consider.  While size is important, you don't want it to be too small and feel tight or to large and feel empty, you also want to make sure the venue allows you to host the event of your dreams.  The venue should fit your personality and style...if you want to have live music, make sure the venue you select will accommodate that desire.  If you want to work with a caterer you absolutely love, ensure the venue will allow for outside catering.  How about decor...do you want to transform the space or are you looking for a space that can stand on its own?  You also want to consider whether or not you want to have your ceremony and reception in the same place and if you choose separate locations, ensure they aren't too far from one another.

YOU’VE ALREADY GOT THE RING, BUT WHAT ABOUT OTHER BLING?

Traditionally, the bride receives a gift of jewelry from her groom to commemorate their wedding day.  Often the gift is earrings or a necklace that can be worn on the day of the wedding.  When choosing jewelry to complete your wedding day look, it is important to choose pieces that truly compliment the look but don't overpower. The pieces chosen should fit the style you are looking to achieve be it modern, classic or vintage and we would also recommend choosing pieces that can be worn many times over, providing a reminder of your special day for years to come.  Stud earrings and drop pendants are always a safe choice, as are tennis and bangle bracelets. A piece of jewelry with a sapphire is also a nice way to achieve your something blue should you be looking to exercise wedding traditions.  You likely will want to stay away from any rings, as your engagement and wedding ring should be the star of the show.

Wondering What to Send? There's a Bouquet for Every Career Occasion

Bloomin' freakin' brilliant.

Florals have been adorning tabletops for years, but bringing a little bloom to your career is also a good look. And not just for spring.

There are plenty of career occasions where flowers not only spruce up a space, but might even help you get ahead.

And if you’re thinking about sending flowers to a boss, a colleague, or your #workwife, but don’t know where to start, our friends at UrbanStems, the floral brand with fresh blooms delivered to you in minutes, are dishing on the best bouquets for every career occasion.

There's a flower for every occasion.

THE INTERVIEW FOLLOW-UP

Worried that you’ll seem overeager? You don’t need to send the biggest bunch your potential employer has ever seen, but a unique arrangement that shows you pay attention to trends but are also able to think “outside the bouquet” might just be the edge that gets you the job. And if it doesn’t you will have left an indelible impression, that  might lead to something down the road. .

Opt for: The Blanc: Striking a balance between memorable and professional is key and super chic tulips are always a safe bet. The wow factor gets upped a bit with an unusual variety: “peony” tulips — lush, fluffy blooms that are the spitting image of their coveted late spring namesake.

THE CONGRATS ON YOUR RAISE

Haven’t you heard? The energy you put out is the energy you bring in. If a friend gets a promotion or a raise, congratulate them with a beautiful arrangement that includes a “thriller” flower, because a flower-filled celebration is in order.

What says congrats best: The Tango. Bold colors are the best way to get the party started! The Tango is full of fiery shades of orange and red, and funky stems like ranunculus and parrot tulips make it feel extra special.

THE BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME

It’s inevitable. There are career highs and lows. But when a colleague or good friend really takes a hit, opt for  a thoughtful gesture that will be much appreciated when they’re in the doldrums. Send your pal flowers and a note to remind them that you don’t get flowers without a little rain.

Keep ‘em smiling through the pain with: The Dino. A good laugh is the best way to beat the blues and this quirky dino succulent planter pretty much guarantees a smile. Succulents are easy to care for and super sturdy, so they’ll outlast any rough patch.

THE 'THANKS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY' GIFT

If someone goes out of their way to facilitate an intro, an interview, or patch you in on a deal, a thank you bunch goes a long way. Especially if it’s someone you don’t know very well. They will be all the more willing to help you out next time if you show your appreciation.

Make yourself memorable with: The Mimosa. Garden roses are absolutely fabulous in their own right, but striking colors like yellow and green are completely unexpected. Mixed with feather eucalyptus and dainty wax flowers, it’s sweet and earnest — just the kind of gratitude you want to convey!

THANK YOUR BOSS WHEN THEY DO A GREAT JOB

It’s not as easy to be the boss as it seems. You have a company and salaries and bringing in dollars to worry about all the time. And when you’re the boss, you don’t have someone above you patting you on the back when you do a good job. In fact, it’s a little thankless.

Make your boss smile withThe Cathy. Your boss has enough to worry about, so an ultra low-maintenance air plant is the perfect way to show them some love without adding to their to-do list. Air plants can take a lot of neglect and need almost no water to stay fabulous-looking.

Want more? Head to UrbanStems to find the perfect floral for any function.

The 5 Ways to Pitch Your Boss to Attend Create & Cultivate

It's not even a hard sell.

photo credit: Tyler Joe for Elle

Tickets for C & C NY are about to SELL OUT, which means it's time to act.

That might mean pitching your boss to foot the bill. This is a smart move, and we are here to tell you how to sell your boss on it.

Some companies have established budgets for job-specific and career advancement training. Some don't. Either way, here are our 5 top reasons to get your capital B Boss to send you to NYC.

RELATIONSHIPS THAT COUNT

The connections and relationships you have access to at C & C are unparalleled. Where else can you interact with #squadgoals and #bossgoals on such an intimate level? Sure, it's easy to ignore an email. A follow-up email. Even a voicemail. But if you take advantage of the golden opportunities in New York, whether through our mentor sessions, it could open a myriad of doors-- not only for you, but for your company as well.

Not to mention, the mentor sessions are heralded by our attendees as some of the useful stepping stones they've ever had.

GETTING A FOOT IN THE DOOR EARLY

Big relationships and partnerships matter, but so does having your finger on the pulse. This is something that Create & Cultivate and our team members excel at. Sure, our past keynotes like Jessica Alba, Rachel Zoe, and Chelsea Handler have seen huge success, but there are smaller, lesser known (though on the path to blowing up) women who your boss might not be aware of… yet.

The conference is your foot in the door, to introduce you to a wide array of valuable partnerships. Round up a list of all potential female entrepreneurs changing the game and brands that will be onsite, research their stats and why you think it would be good to get on their radar now, and sell your boss.

DIGITAL EDUCATION BOOTCAMP

Sure there is fun to be had-- goodie bags and a power cocktail hour, but C & C gets down to brass tacks. The panel discussions, from putting brand before business to why content will always be Queen, gives attendees direct takeaways. You're learning from the best in the biz, like Rebecca Minkoff, Aimee Song, and CEOs who are sharing how they built their businesses. They're there to pass on how they did it, while also encouraging you to forge ahead.

IMPORTANCE OF GETTING OFFSITE

The work environment has changed, and working from a mobile office is one tenant of the new working world. However, beyond working on-the-go it's important to get out of the office and put your skills to good use. As they say, if you don't use it, you lose it. If you spent most of 2016 behind a computer or in an office, explain the benefits of hands-on experience. Whether you want to use C & C to work on interpersonal skills-- like sticking out a hand and introducing yourself to a stranger-- or as the first place to make your mark in the business world, there is nothing like practical application.

"To make your mark in the business world there is nothing like practical application."

Tweet this.

CONFIDENCE BOOSTING

In the same way that a wellness retreat works to revitalize your body, a conference like Create & Cultivate works to boost your brain power, which in turn gives you a confidence jolt like no other. When you leave New York you'll feel energized and ready to dive back into your job with more fervor than ever. Which isn't to say you don't give it your all now, but there is something about the energy generated at C & C that gives attendees the focus and confidence to really assess and hone their strengths.

BONUS: TELL YOUR BOSS YOU'LL BRING HER HOME YOUR VIP SWAG BAG...

And remember when you're presenting this to your boss, it's crucial to nail down specifics that are relevant to your job. Find the speaker, panelist, or mentor that is most beneficial to you, your current position, and your company as a whole. Elaborate on how building a relationship with this person will be of merit to all three. Give your boss deliverables. If you tell her you're going to have a conversation with , make sure you're breaking down why this is relevant. Bosses are interested in ROI.

So get to pitching and follow these words to tickets here.

Dreaming Big & Manifesting Your Hustle Into Something More

Just a little Saturday motivaton from Kat Lane.

Kat Lane started working at a very young age and she hasn't stopped the hustle since. We caught up with the Miami-based radio host, creative director, and musician to ask about balance, hustle and working with clothing brand QPED Life.

She's got the right attitude when it comes to achieving your dreams.

You started working when you were 12. Can you give us a little bit about your background and what compelled you to start so early?

It all started on the dance floor. As far back as I can remember I was dancing, acting, and on stage, and because I grew up around people who worked hard at what they loved - I got used to working hard for what I wanted to do from early on.  Age 12 was a big year for me in that I booked my first commercial, I wrote my first song, and recorded the song.  I started pursing my love for dancing, singing, and acting on a level where I was actually making money (imagine that!).  It was definitely a progressive build, but since I was 12, I remember equating the whole "if you do what you love, you'll never work a day of your life" perspective to the fact that I loved expressing myself through music and motivation.

From microphone to desk. How have you balanced the line of creative and business woman?

There are a couple factors here, the first is knowing the importance of working hard and having a willingness to expand your boundaries and grow on different levels.  When I study people I consider "great" at what they do (or did), and see the amount of tenacity, persistence, patience, and ingenuity it took for them to achieve their goals, I clearly understand what I'm taking on, and that it requires both a creative and practical approach. My team at Sound Business Recordings and at QPED Life are branding experts, and have always urged me to stay focused on both aspects (creative and business), as one could not exist without the other.

The second factor is in having an awesome support system between my family and the awesome company I get to work with.  There's nothing better than to have a team that finds importance and value in the same things you yourself do - and also a team that cares for each other and has each others' backs.

So what is your role with QPED Life?

I started with QPED Life when it was just a concept that Sean Sloan had created.  The original thought was to create something positive and meaningful in entertainment, and digestible for anyone with an ambition to succeed and be the most they can be.  The concept evolved into the song "QPED", which I sang and recorded, and which contains a lot of the sentiment of what has become the brand QPED Life - ambition, heart, focus, forward movement, honesty to oneself.  Once I really understood the mantras and what the brand stood for, and started seeing the initial apparel designs, I was completely on-board.

I currently consult with QPED Life on the creative side, advising on garments/cuts/fabrics as well as current and future fashion trends. I'll be overseeing our upcoming music program, which you'll hear more about in Q2 of next year, and I'm also a Brand Ambassador for the line.  Basically I get to offer my ideas and expertise/vision of what is possible with the brand - from a variety of angles.

And why was it important for you to take on another role?

The entertainment industry is kind of like a creative garden - you can keep planting different herbs/plants/varietals, and they all feed off of the same energy and stem from the same roots.  What I've done and continue to do in music - makes the garden more interesting from the outside as well as internally.  For example, when I'm searching for new records to play in my radio mix, I get music from all over the world.  A great artist is like a journalist reporting on the energy of a particular location or a movement, so many times I get reports that help me spot trends way ahead of the curve.  I use this during our QPED Life discussions on new designs, marketing campaigns, social media, and more.  Best of all, I get to bring ME to whatever I get involved with, and being in multiple roles allows me to have different ways to reach & connect with people.

What is it about the company that’s unique?

QPED Life is a communal brand that's all about bringing people UP, and this translates from the designs down to the people involved with the company.  The owners of QPED Life have a strong belief in the physical aspect of human interaction, which is a fresh take in an era where we're all staring at our phones for a good portion of the day!  I think the overall positive messaging and encouragement of dreaming big and putting thoughts into action - is something I believe is not only healthy, but absolutely necessary.

"Dreaming big and putting thoughts into action - is something I believe is not only healthy, but absolutely necessary."

Tweet this.

There is also a level playing field at QPED Life, so doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl, young/old, etc - your ideas and your work ethic are what are most valued and critiqued.  I get a lot of hands-on training and no matter what happens, I know the brand will have my back, and that's not something that everyone can always bet on.

What’s a phrase or image that you really want to put on a shirt?

Love over Hate.  We actually made a shirt with Love over Hate a few years ago - prior to launching QPED Life.  With the recent political atmosphere, this is a phrase that could really help unite people over what really matters to all of us.  Another phrase I'm drawn to is "Shoot for the Moon", and we actually just made a design with this phrase for Kat Lane fans!  I really love this piece, you can check it out here:  www.katlanemusic.com/merch

How do you see the company growing?

I've seen the company grow from a set of principles, to a song, then designs, and eventually to a real clothing line.  You're going to see a lot of growth from QPED Life over the next 2 years, from expansion of the line/designs to accessories, live events, and one huge surprise that will be revealed around June/July 2017 :)

But on a basic level, the messages of motivation and positivity will continue to be conveyed in many different platforms - anywhere the message could make a difference in someone's life.  The goal is to grow organically to where people understand and support the spirit of the brand and then the actual physical products - because this is the underlying purpose of why we do what we do at QPED Life.

Do you think it’s important for women to have more than one hustle?

Whether it's for women or for men, hustling just to have a hustle doesn't work, I really feel like you have to work for something that's important to you - and only then will hustle manifest into something more.  Our belief has always been quality over quantity - so when you put your heart into something, it will grow into things we never could have imagined.  Entertainment in general is important for me - I've always been creative, so having different "hustles" means having different avenues to utilize and share my creativity.

"You have to work for something that's important to you - and only then will hustle manifest into something more."

Tweet this.

"Shoot from the heart,” what does that mean to you?

"Shoot from the Heart" is a message of going for something with honesty for who you are, and giving it all you've got.  It's all about being true to yourself.

If we were to find you anywhere at 7am, where would it be?

Radio!  I host on weekend mornings on Miami's #1 pop station - the New Hits 97.3

If we were to find you somewhere at midnight, where would that be?

Radio!  I have a mixshow on Friday nights too :D  I spend a lot of time outside of the office with QPED Life - experiencing life, and since the customer is now the real boss with retail as well as with music and so much more - I like to get out and meet people as much as I can!

How to Recreate the Look of Create & Cultivate at Home

Transform any room in your house.

Create & Cultivate and High Fashion Home are aesthetically a great fit. And we can never get enough of the vignettes created at our conferences. If we could transport them into our own living rooms, we would. (And you can.)

We checked in with HFH co-founder Dolley Frearson about the company's presence at C&C, best sellers, and how to transform any room in your house.

What about High Fashion Home speaks to the C&C girl?

I think HFH speaks to the C&C girl because we offer them the freedom to choose from a large section of high-style and high-design products that caters to her intelligence, creativity, and individuality. The C&C girl knows how to create her own look; she just needs the right selection/mix of products ranging from timeless and modern to bohemian and eclectic. She loves being fashion-forward and different, but the space must be practical and functional as well.

Who is the ‘High Fashion Home' woman?

She is a confident, worldly woman who loves high-design home décor that suits her modern, eclectic lifestyle. Home décor is important to her because her home/space is her sanctuary that brings her joy and allows her to create memories with family and friends. She loves inspiration and to get lost in her discoveries. Decorating is a journey to her. She is also a savvy shopper who will not compromise on quality and enjoys a seamless, transparent and authentic customer service experience.

"The C&C girl knows how to create her own look."

We create little vignettes on site at C&C that end up being the most photographed, but what is the best way to update a room? What pieces can we add to create updated “vignettes” at home?

I would say artwork, rug, pillows, and accessories...or any combo of these.

What are your favorite items on the HFH site?

And what makes the store both online and the Houston brick and mortar unique?

What makes our online store and brick and mortar unique is our carefully curated selection of furniture and home décor accessories and how we create room ideas to inspire our customers. Our store is 125,000 square feet and four stories and for those who have shopped in our Houston store, they will tell you that is like a home décor mecca. It would take hours to walk through the store which is a good thing and a bad thing. But the best part is our layout and merchandise mix. We really love to mix it up and it's our goal and mantra to inspire our customers. It's wonderful when you hear first-time or long-time customers say that our place is so inspirational and their favorite place to go and wander. It's so flattering because we know how important their time is and the fact that they want to spend it in our "home"...that just makes me feel so proud of our work and our team.

We are also very proud of our wonderful manufacturing partners and eco-initiatives. We take the time to seek out products made from salvaged or sustainably harvested wood, plant-based materials, recycled fibers, and USA-made upholstery. About 95% of our upholstery products (sofas, sectionals, beds, chairs, etc.) are bench-made in the North Carolina. We are also committed to our partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation; For every piece of furniture sold at our store and online, we plant a tree -- so far, that's over 120,700 trees planted!

Top Hacks for Busy Working Travelers

It's not always easy, but we make it fun.

Who run the world? Women.

But we’re also running all over the place. Taking business meetings and holding court in different areas of the country. We jump on planes (never to conclusions) and we’re constantly on-the-go.

At the least that’s how it is for the team behind Create & Cultivate, and we know we’re not alone. From scouting locations to heading out town for conferences and popups, we’re up in the air and out of town quite a bit. Traveling for work isn’t always easy, but we’ve found a few ways to make sure it’s fun.

Here are some of our favorite travel hacks:

Where to Stay: Use HomeAway Vacation Rentals

Travel for work may not be “vacation,” but with more than 1.2 million rentals in 190 countries, HomeAway offers a smart solution to lodging costs for employees.

The benefits are multifold, especially when and if you’re traveling with your whole team. First, it’s less expensive than renting multiple hotel rooms, especially when you factor in the cost of food. More so, having a kitchen is both a financially and emotionally beneficial. Room service charges add up. So does heading out for every meal. Beyond that, being able to gather in a kitchen (or cozy up on a couch) with your work squad when you’re OOT gives you the much-needed creature comforts of home.

Our team is like family, especially when we’re on location. We pull so many late nights the week leading up to the conference. From midnight oil burning computer cram sessions to early AM (being able to make coffee in the morning is key to getting out the door) powwows, having the team in one place is also one less thing to worry about. Instead of solo working in the wee hours of the night, we’re in it together. Being in a home together is one of the ways we keep sane.

We stayed at a 4-bedroom bungalow in the Kirkwood neighborhood in Atlanta. The home was spacious and perfect for our five-person team (and we made more than a few late-night pizzas).

Spent many late nights gathered around this table.

When you’re away, you can also be home.

How to De-Stress: Pzizz Yourself to Sleep

Stress is an inevitable challenge when you travel for work. There are deadlines and time changes. Even the most seasoned business travelers are plagued by insomnia and burnout, both of which drastically affect your performance.

One of the best rated sleep apps, Pzizz (which, has made a fan of J.K Rowling) has a patented algorithm that plays a sleep-optimized mix of music, voiceover and sound effects. They work together (just like your #workcrew) to quiet your mind, put you to sleep, keep you asleep, and wake up feeling refreshed. If you know it’s going to be a long week, getting to bed on time is one of the best things you can do for your body. A well-rested team is a well-oiled machine.

How to Pack: Only Bring a Carry-On

One of the best things about staying in a home vs. hotel is that most homes come equipped with a washer and a dryer. A MAJOR travel hack because it means you can fit everything into a carry-on and not have to worry about paying for baggage or losing it.

When traveling and packing for work trips you need to curate your suitcase the same way you would a proposal: remove the fluff and keep it tight. You can successfully travel (and still look good) for a week with a carry-on.

How you ask? This is our proven strategy: two pairs of versatile pants (one denim, one ‘fancy,’) four t-shirts (assorted colors), two blouses, three pairs of socks, four pairs of underwear (remember you have a washing machine), one dress or fancier outfit, a pair of heeled boots and dress shoes, and one magical, cozy outfit that reminds you of home.

If you’re going to be staying in a city for longer than two days, hit up the local Target and buy bath products in their travel section. You can get everything you need for under $10 (which, is much cheaper than checking luggage). Bring your jewelry or accessories in your purse.

On the plane you should wear: sneakers, leggings, t-shirt, and carry your larger coat.

That’s all you need. Truly. Try it once and you will never check another piece of luggage for work again!

Why Diversity and Representation Matter in Business and Media

Important takeaways from the #CreateCultivateATL "Shattering the Glass" panel.

Gigi Gorgeous looked into the Create & Cultivate crowd this past Saturday in Atlanta and said excitedly, "There is so much diversity under this tent!" The audience cheered, acknowledging the importance of representation at the conference.

The six women on stage, Gigi, Jodie Patterson, Nicolette Mason, Daniela Ramirez, Maya Penn, and Mattie James were gathered to discuss the importance of diversity and representation in business and media. Nicolette put it simply, "People deserve to see themselves in the media."

Here are some of the other important takeaways.

ON NOT PUTTING OURSELVES IN BOXES

Jodie Paterson, co-founder of (recently sold) DooBop and mother of a trans son, Penelope, told the crowd, “We have to be able to choose all of the things that we are, not just one. We have to let our whole selves out."

"I never thought working for a fashion magazine was ever in the realm of possibility for me," said blogger and writer Nicolette Mason. "I had the education and the background, but there was no one who looked like me. No one I could look to as an example," she shared. "When Vogue Italia reached out to me and asked if I would be a contributor and a year from that point Marie Claire asked me to come in as a columnist and I penned a column for five years-- it was so amazing and surreal to know that my voice did have the potential and ability to be part of the mainstream."

ON HOW TO OVERCOME STEREOTYPES

Maddie James, moderator and the blogger behind Mattieologie kept it simple, but succinct “Stories kill stereotypes,” she said. The more we share, the more the outliers become part of the cultural narrative.

This was echoed by Jodie who said, "I see diversity as a domino effect. Diversity is some of us taking the first steps and putting ourselves out there and then asking and demanding it from all. If it's stunted in one area, it's stunted in all areas. People see and feel their way through change, not just statistics. It’s our job to tell stories. It’s also the media’s job to let the story happen."

"It’s our job to tell stories. It’s also the media’s job to let the story happen."

Gigi agreed. "Being a transgender woman I know the hardships that the people in my community go through," she shared. "I think it's important to get my story out there for the world to see. We saw this with Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox-- they're huge media icons but they made transgender a household topic and that's really powerful. It changes people's perspective."

"When you start sharing stories," said Jodie, "people are able to see and feel their way through change, rather than statistically analyze change.

ON THE MEDIA'S ROLE IN RESHAPING THE NARRATIVE

Maya Penn, CEO of Maya's Ideas, and the youngest (16) on the stage told the crowd, “I think the media needs to start stepping up. They need to say we need more diversity.”

Nicolette added, "It's the job of content creators and media creators to reflect our real world."

Maya said no one should feel like an odd one out. "We need diverse voices to show that representation matters. In non-traditional fields like STEM and science."

“I think the media needs to start stepping up. They need to say we need more diversity.”

Tweet this.

"My third child is trans and we did a video with Cosmo and it received 9 millions views," said Jodie. "It's the media's job to allow the story to unfold. I read this quote that everything is copy, meaning if you slip and fall on a banana, people laugh at you. If you slip and fall on a banana, and then you tell people, you own the laughter because that's your story."

"There have been baby steps along the way," explained Nicolette, "but there is so much more room to include diverse voices."

The 10 Must Read Takeaways From Create & Cultivate ATL

Save yourself some stress and read this.

The speakers at Create & Cultivate never disappoint. They never fail with the mic and knowledge drop. Here are ten of our favorite moments from last weekend at #CreateCultivateATL.

AYESHA CURRY ON NOT GIVING YOURSELF BOUNDARIES: “The moment I gave myself a ceiling is the moment everything fell apart. The moment I removed the ceiling, things started happening. I threw that ceiling in the garbage.”

ADRIANNA ADARME OF A COZY KITCHEN ON MOTIVATION: “My motivation was I didn’t have a Plan B. And that still really motivates me. There is so much competition and so many people that are super talented, and to honor the place where I’m at I have to think that way.”

"I didn’t have a Plan B. And that still really motivates me."

MANDY KELLOGG RYE OF WAITING ON MARTHA ON THE HUSTLE: “I worked two full time jobs for two years. Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s beginning or end. I bet none of you followed me when I had 100 followers.  This is sacrifice and struggling with finances. Just keep fighting the good fight.”

RACH MARTINO ON SPENDING THE MONEY:  “Hire a professional photographer. That first hundred dollars was really hard to give up, but it changed everything for me.”

DOLLEY FREARSON CO-FOUNDER OF HIGH FASHION HOME ON HARD WORK: “Practice like you’re in second, play like you’re in first. It’s a [Steph Curry] quote that applies to the business world because it is about pounding the pavement, putting in the hours and working really hard. Know your competition, respect the competition and push yourself to the limit in any industry. In the end it ends up elevating everyone’s game.”

"The moment I removed the ceiling, things started happening.  I threw that ceiling in the garbage.”

Tweet this.

SUSAN TYNAN FOUNDER OF FRAMEBRIDGE ON THE ‘TOP’: “You’re the one ultimately responsible, so you can’t throw blame anywhere else.”

IVKA ADAM ON BEING FOUNDER OF ICONERY: “If you’re not comfortable with uncertainty it’s important to bring someone in as a partner who is comfortable with it, or find ways to bolster that. Ultimately if it’s too rocky for you, it may not make sense for you to start a business. You are unsure every day; it’s so up and down. You have to know yourself and how you handle uncertainty."

IVA PAWLING CO-FOUNDER OF RICHER POORER ON ROLES AT THE TOP CHANGING: “The guy isn’t always the numbers or the brains behind the operation. And the woman is not just the creative. Don’t get hung up on it.”

ANNA LIESEMEYER OF IN HONOR OF DESIGN ON FINDING YOUR TRIBE: "Whether it’s a friend or significant other, it helps to have an outside perspective to give you a set of wings."

NICOLE RICHIE ON TAKING THE 'EASY' ROUTE: "If your want to save yourself some energy, just be yourself. There's nothing else to be. We each have something to bring to the table. I think instead of looking outward and focusing on what everyone else is doing, you have to have trust and faith enough in yourself to know that you’re going to bring something totally different.”

And honorary mic drop from our own editorial director:

"We're not here to play the game, we're here to change it."

BTS: Our #CreateCultivateATL Speaker Dinner with Crown Royal

An exclusive look at our speaker dinner last week.

We can't believe it's almost been a week since we sat down to delicious cocktails from Crown Royal Vanilla and even more delicious convo at our speaker dinner at the W Atlanta in Downtown. Is it possible to FOMO post event? We think so.

So we're throwing it back to a night of "bests." Where Sarah Michelle Gellar called the night's specialty Vanilla Fashioned cocktail the "prettiest drink ever" she's ever seen. Where the Beckerman Twins, Cailli and Sam deemed their personalized monogrammed bags, "the best takeaway ever." (Which, we'd have to agree.) And countless boss ladies from Nicolette Mason to Adrianna Adarme of A Cozy Kitchen and Ingrid Nilsen raised a glass and toasted to being in a room filled with amazing female energy.

Jaclyn Johnson, founder of Create & Cultivate addressed the speakers, telling them that the kick-off dinner is an event that she looks forward to every year. "It is an honor to have each and every one of you here tonight," she said, "and I am so excited for you guys to experience the conference tomorrow."

Click through the gallery below and enjoy the night's cocktail recipe from Crown Royal!

Vanilla Fashioned

1 sugar cube soaked in orange bitters

2oz Crown Royal Vanilla

Frozen flowers

Flamed orange zest

Place the sugar cube in a rocks glass with orange bitters, top with 2oz Crown Royal Vanilla. Once the sugar dissolves you put in your ice (containing frozen edible flowers) and stir! Orange peels are a great garnish (and you can even ignite the citrus oil when you squeeze the peel by a lit match).

Cheers!
