Daria Shapovalova on How Digital Clothing Can Disrupt the Fashion Industry

Imagine a closet filled with clothing that automatically fits your body, always looks good in photos, and is sustainably and ethically made. That’s what virtual fashion is designed to do: Blur the lines between fantasy and reality by creating digital garments to be worn by your online avatars using 3D technology or edited onto images of your body using augmented reality.

While the concept of selling virtual clothing is still relatively new, it’s not totally foreign. In May 2019, the world’s first piece of ‘digital couture’, an iridescent, translucent one-piece designed by Amber Jae Slooton, was sold at a New York charity auction for $9,500.

And 2023 CC100 honoree Dara Shapovalova, co-founder of DressX, the first multi-brand digital fashion retailer, predicts that in the future, every fashion brand will offer a digital collection regardless of style or price point—similarly to how high-fashion luxury brands branched out to offer perfumes or accessories when the industry saw a rise in those categories.

DressX was created as a “metacloset” for consumers and brands to easily access the Metaverse. Launched in 2020 by Shapovalova and Natalia Modenova, the digitally native company’s main goal is to offer every person in the world an infinite digital wardrobe for their online identity with no limitations on creative expression. The company just raised $15 million in Series A funding, which it plans to use to improve its app and NFT marketplace.

“Digital fashion offers a more accessible and eco-friendly way for customers to experience luxury fashion while still providing a sense of exclusivity and excitement that comes with wearing designer pieces in a digital space,” Shapovalova explains.

A few pioneering fashion houses have already begun to pave the way for luxury fashion in the metaverse: Gucci, already well-known for its experimenting, released virtual sneakers while Louis Vuitton launched a metaverse game where players can collect NFTs.

But the biggest hurdle, when it comes to digital clothing going mainstream, is understanding what the Metaverse is and how virtual fashion exists inside of it.

Waiting for ‘meta fashion’ to have its moment

Purchasing in-game “skins” and cosmetics, used to customize characters, is nothing new to the gaming world. And now the fashion industry and its consumers are starting to take notice—Morgan Stanley forecasts that the virtual fashion market could be worth over $55 billion by 2030

“Meta fashion presents a great opportunity for the industry to reach new heights, open up new opportunities, create new markets, and become integrated into the digital creative economy,” says Shapovalova.

“The transition from traditional fashion to its digital form continues to take place in a natural way,” she adds. “It’s reflecting the overall shift in how we live and experience the world around us.”

She describes how within this rapidly changing landscape, we are increasingly becoming “the avatars of ourselves” on various social media platforms, gaming, messaging, and streaming services, adding that “digital fashion serves to adorn our digital personas.”

Like media, fashion will have to embrace digital to survive

For luxury fashion to thrive in the next decade, brands will need to release their collections into a digital world where most young consumers are already spending or gambling with the chance that contemporary artists who are already well-versed in the online world will release some sort of variation before them, which recently happened to the French luxury brand Hermés.

In December 2021, digital artist Mason Rothchild released an NFT collection of faux fur, colorful variants of Hermès iconic Birkin handbag dubbed “The MetaBirkin.” After being sued by the famed fashion house, the court ultimately ruled against Rothschild in February 2023 when a nine-person federal jury in Manhattan determined that he had infringed on the company’s trademark rights. The jurors also found that his NFTs were not protected speech.

Virtual fashion paves the way for a more sustainable future

With the fashion industry being the second-most polluting industry, it’s been widely debated whether or not virtual clothing is a definite answer to its long-existing environmental issues. According to TechCrunch, an estimated 30 percent of all manufactured goods end up as waste within months of rolling off the production line every year. In a survey commissioned by the credit card company Barclaycard, nearly one in 10 UK shoppers (9 percent) admit to buying clothing only to take a photo for social media.

Considering the current data combined with the continuous rise of fast fashion that only promises more waste to come, the benefits of digitally constructing fashion present a compelling opportunity for brands to reshape outdated business models and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

Shapolvalova says that the production of a digital garment produced by DressX emitts 97 percent less CO2 and saves 3,300 liters of water per garment on average, compared to a physical one.

“By replacing just one percent of physical clothing with digital garments, we could save five trillion liters of water and reduce the fashion industry’s annual carbon footprint by 35 million tons,” says Shapovalova, citing a report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation

The reality is that as long as physical clothing exists, the industry will still likely struggle with the damage done to the environment. But if digital outfits can be used as more sustainable alternatives when it comes to things like content creation or building, introducing trendy, one-off collections, and building hype around brands, that damage could be reduced dramatically.

Looking forward to digital fashion

As Shapovalova explains, meta fashion will definitely shape the future of the fashion industry. Even though digital fashion cannot fully replace physical clothing in its current form, what it can do, she says, is allow us to continue to enjoy the fun of fashion while also making a meaningful contribution to the environment.

And while an argument can be made that virtual fashion only exists in the digital space, robbing us of the tangible joy that physical clothing can bring—it isn’t any less real because of that. Virtual fashion opens up previously locked doors that lead us to very real experiences that are at the core of the traditional fashion industry: creativity and self-expression. While the clothing may not exist in real life, those feelings still do.

Few things are more relaxing than watching Tina make magic on the pottery wheel. Her line of sophisticated clay ceramics—in both warm neutrals and spunky shades like millennial pink—are about as Instagrammable as it gets.

Michelle Robinson, Mister Michelle

Eloisa Ribeiro, The Wolf Nest

After struggling to find beautiful, high-quality bedding for her dogs, Eloisa launched The Wolf Nest to create her own. The company’s products are handmade from excess fabric that would otherwise wind up in landfills, and a portion of profits are donated to LA-based animal rescue centers.

#GirlCrush: 5 Small Business Owners We're Loving This Month

We’ll take one of everything, please.

Here at C&C, we’re always coming across truly amazing women who are running cool, creative small businesses and shaking things up in their respective industries. Starting today, we’ll be sharing monthly roundups of these budding entrepreneurs, so you can get in on the party and support their work.

See who we’re inspired by right now below!

Jessica Young, Bubble

Jessica was working as a chef and head of product at meal delivery service Daily Harvest when she started building Bubble, a direct-to-consumer health food company. “Think Farfetch meets Erewhon, but available to everyone in the USA,” she says.

Ally Maki, Asian American Girl Club

After realizing that none of the clubs she was in as a child had any members that looked like her, Ally knew she wanted to create that community. She launched AAGC, an apparel company that redefines what it means to be an Asian woman. (We love their clothes, but we’re pretty obsessed with their marketing, too.)

Anishka Boozer, Gypsy BK

Aniksha first got into jewelry when she sold a collection of repurposed designer vintage jewelry. She realized the demand for her unique style was high, and so Gypsy BK was born. Today, Anishka custom designs and manufactures her own gorgeous pieces.

Jenna Blazevich, Vichcraft

Jenna launched Vichcraft shortly after turning down her dream job in packaging design to pursue her own business full-time. She’s built quite the empire, working on projects for clients like Instagram, NPR, and Hillary for America on top of hosting workshops and selling apparel, prints, and accessories on her shop.

Liz Eichholz and Lindsey Johnson, Weezie

When Liz asked Lindsey an innocent question: "what towels do you use?" Lindsey responded "I actually hate my towels." And thus began Weezie, makers of the softest towels we’ve ever touched.

This CCO Says There's No Longer One Way to Do This

Changing the game.

After working her way up at two other major fashion houses, Marie Mazelis came to Halston. Looking to introduce a generation of new Halstonites to the heritage brand that pretty much defined the '70s, Mazelis had her work cut out for her.

But what she knew was that dressing had fundamentally changed. Specifically, dressing for work had fun-da-mentally changed. And when she took control as Chief Creative Officer, she knew this had to be incorporated into Halston's offerings. That dressing had become interchangeable.

Read more from Mazelis on the why and how, fashion dress codes (there are none) and lasting power of Halston.

The business world (for most of us) is more casual than ever. In what ways have you seen a difference in the way women dress for work?

I think how we dress overall has become a lot more personal and much more relaxed. There isn’t just one acceptable way to dress for the office. Women no longer have two separate wardrobes – one for work and one for the weekend. They’ve become interchangeable. It’s all in the mix, it’s how you put things together.

What do women want from their work wear?

Comfort, ease, versatility... Also, I think, longevity… They want things that won’t be out of style next season. Today’s woman is very savvy, and she’s willing to invest in quality that will last. She is also looking for something unique and special, with attention to detail.

How has the way you dress for work changed over the course of your career?

Interesting question. Working in fashion, I was never really confined to a “dress code”, so the changes in how I dress for work have been mostly influenced by changes in my life. My days now are a whirlwind - filled with meetings on color, embroidery and prints… Fittings, and photo shoots, and sketch reviews... And when I’m not working, I’m out and about with my two boys. All this leaves little time for anything else, so I’ve had to simplify. I’ve developed a “uniform” of sorts. During the week I wear all black – all my favorite pieces that are easily interchangeable, which I update with new silhouettes each season.  It’s one less decision to make before 9am.

In your last seven years at Halston how have you addressed the changing needs of women?

I have focused on creating designs that are lasting – both in quality and aesthetic. Halston brand is known for its timelessness and modernity. There are so many vintage Halston pieces that look as if they had been designed today. To make Halston glamour more accessible, our collections have expanded to include more casual pieces, giving options for dressing up or down, and thus offering more versatility and value.  As I mentioned earlier, it’s all in how you put things together. Like when you wear a cocktail dress with flats, it feels more casual and relaxed, making it appropriate for day.

What are some major trends you're forecasting for this year?

It feels like everything is on trend. It’s all in play. So it’s more about having your own unique point of view.

How do we update our office basics?

For me acquiring a new piece of clothing is about the emotion it evokes.  Dressing for work can become so routine, so mechanical in a way… I love resetting from time to time with something that makes me feel really happy when I reach for it in the morning. Invest in pieces that inspire you.

Can you recommend 6 easy adds to any closet?

An iconic Halston silhouette, this classic jumpsuit is an easy all-in-one outfit.

A great option from desk to dinner. Layer a jacket over it for day, put on some heels for night.

A fun piece to complete any look, whether with jeans or a cocktail dress, it adds a touch of glam.

Classic Halston, this timeless dress should be in every woman’s wardrobe.

One of my favorite tops this season. I love the delicate ruching detail and the flowy, effortless silhouette.

Gotta love a great slide! A summer must-have, wear these with anything for a relaxed, yet put together look.

Why You Deserve a Spring Break

Why is it just for kids?

An unbothered, sweet week of silence. Or raucous good time in Tulum. However you choose to take a break, is fine by us-- as long as you take it.

According to a recent Gallup poll only six in 10 Americans took a vacation in 2017. The same poll claimed, “Employers might do well to examine how to encourage vacation time in a way that benefits their workforce's engagement as well as their employees' overall well-being, including such radical policies as having no vacation policies at all.”

Which brings us to-- SPRING BREAK. Why do we lose that precious time known as spring break as adults? Sure, there are emails to be answered and dial-in conference calls to be managed, but it’s vital that you take a brain break.

Studies have shown that the respite effects of a vacation can increase productivity, concentration, and creativity, by as much as 80 percent. There are even companies offering bonuses to employees who use their vacation days. (Sounds like a dream, right?)

And when you’re on said break, you need some sweet footwear. Here are some of our favorite ADULT SPRING BREAK options from Dolce Vita

UMA in White

A white boot is very of-the-moment. And there is something super romantic about this embellished western-style bootie. Bonus: it looks great with a cold one in hand.

DANE in Indigo

An update on the wedge, that can easily transition from day-to-night. This is what we call a perfect packer. Wear it to the beach. Wear it to cocktails. There is nothing that the DANE can’t do. (Sort of like you. Hello multi-tasker.)

KAI in Caramel

We love a little lace-up sandal in caramel that elongates your leg. (Too bad it can’t elongate your vacation.) But, hey, with a little R&R you’ll go back to work looking to the future.

ZARITA in Yellow

This is the essential summer sandal. Which means, your feet can be on vacation, even if you aren’t. (But please, as previously stated, take a break!)

CELITA in Blue

And finally, what’s spring break without a slide? Like the embellished Celita in blue, which has the has the ideal amount of edge for everyday wear. Even when you’re back at your desk.

Have spring break plans? Share in the comments below. It just might encourage someone else to take a break too!

Heading to the Desert? Here’s What You Need to Pack

Say see-ya to your packing struggles.

If you’re busy pondering that decade-old question-- what do I wear to the desert, ponder no more.

In partnership with BGBGeneration, we’ve rounded up the dream desert essentials that will seamlessly transition from pool party to polo field, day to night, and so much more.

Cotton Eyelet Ruffle-Hem Romper:

Part flirty, part fun, this cotton eyelet romper is the easiest way to do pretty, without having to worry about looking too plain. Dance the night away to Beyoncé in this sweet number.

Sunprint Floral Asymmetrical Maxi Dress:

Romance this trend with a floral dress that’s sure to beat the desert heat and bring the fashion heat. It’s easy and breezy, with a party slit in the front. Ideal for keeping it casual and sweet.

Sleeveless Cutout Denim Jumpsuit:

Look effortlessly cool in this one piece denim jumpsuit, that’s a cutout above the rest. It’s modern, functional and fashionable. What’s not to love?

Striped Tie-Shoulder Culotte Jumpsuit:

Are you spotting the trend of clutch one-pieces? It’s for keeping everything super simple, while still totally on trend. With chic spaghetti straps and a color palette that feels more south of France than Coachella Valley, you’ll be a crowd standout.

Grommet Saddle Bag:

Give your outfit a touch of tassel with this Grommet Saddle Bag, the perfect size for carrying essentials only. You’re going to want to dance after-all.

Whipstitched Floppy Hat:

You don’t have to rock a dad hat to keep the sun off of your face. Opt instead for a floppy hat that elevates your outfit, without looking that you rummaged through dad’s storage bin.

Floral Star Choker:

If you’re ready to say buh-bye to a flower crown (they can cause quite the headache after eight plus hours) a star choker is a perfect replacement. It’s not too fussy, but accessorizes any outfit with the right amount of chic.

Meet Me Backstage Tee:

And because denim shorts are a staple at any summer festival, you need a tee that says you’re going places-- like backstage.

Pro tip: Take 25% off all regular price items on www.bcbgeneration.com from 4/9 – 4/17

with the code: CREATE25

What else are you planning to pack? We recommend SPF. Share your essentials below!

4 Quick Ways to Upgrade Your Work Look

Brrr-ing. That’s our mix of brr and boring. How we feel about our winter wardrobe.

Brrr-ing. That’s our mix of brr and boring, and TBH it’s how we’re feeling about our winter wardrobe right about. Layers are chic and all, but we’re ready to bring our outfit vibes out of hibernation. Because look, winter will be over before you know it and we need a few looks to match our spring feeeel-ings. Everything's coming up!

Yes. We’ve collectively made it through the long chilly haul. But if you’re like us, and wondering how to upgrade your winter/spring transition, without making a major dent in your paycheck, we’ve got tons of great ideas.

EAR BLING.

Throwing on a pair of earrings to match your top can make a huge difference for your look. Bright earrings are also a great distraction to a not-so-glamorous hair day. What goes better with an Excel spreadsheet than a bold earring? Nothing.

JUST SAY NO TO COMPUTER BAGS.

Leave the plain colors for your tech. Carrying a bold bag that demands attention is a surefire way to upgrade a casually chic office look. Besides, you don’t need to lug your laptop to lunch. Leave it on your desk and bring one of the above instead.

GET IN CHARACTER.

It’s still a little frosty outside, so layering your outfit with mix matching textures adds some character to your look. Some of our office favorites are denim paired with linen or cotton.

BOLD NATION.

Color blocking or just throwing on some bold patterns is one of the simplest ways to spice up outfit for the day. Just grab a simple colored top and pair it with a bold printed bottom and you got it girl!

All products featured can be found on YOOX

What are your favorites ways to rock your look at work? Share below!

4 Creative Ways to Announce Your New Engagement

Make it pop.

Are you one of the 40 percent of people that get engaged between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day? The holiday months are some of the most popular when it comes to love.

It makes sense after all. Family and fun, eggnog. Mistletoe… the New Year’s Eve capital K Kiss. There’s a lot of smoochin’ going on lately. And we love it. So does Simon G Jewelry, the leader in engagement rings and bling. But announcing your love to the world can feel more overwhelming than the wedding. How do you make sure your announcement is equal parts sweet and creative?

Here are some ideas!

MAKE IT COLORFUL

The recently engaged blogger Color Me Courtney wanted an IG announcement that popped as much as her ring. (#SimonGSparkles.)A couple balloons, a bright pink monochrome, and the #onbendedknee Boyz to Men style swagger from her now fiancé, it was picture perfect. It didn’t hurt that she was rocking a gorgeous yellow diamond stunner.

IT SHOULD BE OUT OF THIS WORLD

This couple took their proposal to the moon and back. To recreate this amazing announcement, find yourself a creative partner and get to work. No one said marriage is easy, but this couple has the moon (and likely the world) on a string.

SMILE BIG.

OK. Maybe it’s not the most creative but you don’t have to have a paint war engagement photoshoot (yes, those exist) to show your true happiness. Sometimes the best thing you can do is smile big and flash a little ring.

And look, it’s not only about the proposal. You have to pop the question to your best gals as well, so why not make it ‘grammable with bridesmaid proposal cards from Etsy! We love the scratch off "Will you be my Bridesmaid" cards.

Have other creative ways to announce? Let us know below!

Exclusive! BTS at the Create & Cultivate x Google Store Dinner

Fun, fashion, and the season's best gifts.

What the best time of the year?

The holidays, obviously.

That was certainly the vibe at our holiday party with Google Store Tuesday night at NeueHouse in Los Angeles. So we’re throwing it to last night’s “bests.”

From Nicolette Mason toasting to her exciting new line Premme, to Whitney Leigh Morris chatting about renovations on her Tiny Canal Cottage, everyone was in the mood to chat and be merry. We had some laughs as well.

Sarah Dubbeldam, founder of Darling Magazine, actress Arielle Vandenberg, and Caroline Lee, founder at Woodnote Photography, gathered around the Google Daydream View to experience the world of virtual reality. While Bianca Alexa, doodled on the Google Pixelbook.

There were laughs and good vibes all around, while notable attendees Whitney Port and Arielle Vandenberg dished on their tips and tricks for holiday shopping. @Arielle said, "I love giving gifts. It's probably my favorite thing ever." Adding "I'm a practical giver. I only give things I know someone will use. Like a salt shaker."

The actress and IG star may have been kidding, but we’re into practicality. (We’re busy women, ya know?) Especially the practical help that the Google Home Mini offers. Want to know what traffic is like by the mall where you do all your holiday shopping? Just ask, “Hey Google, what’s the traffic like near The Grove?”

Whitney Port dressed up for one of the first times since becoming a new mom. The "I Love My Baby, But" star put on her Miu Miu shoes-- "they're surprisingly comfortable!" she said.

Jaclyn Johnson, founder of Create & Cultivate addressed the crowd, telling them that holiday season surrounded by her favorite women is something she looks forward to every year.

"It is an honor to have each and every one of you here tonight," she said, "and I am so excited for you guys to experience the joys of Google Store. This has been a partnership of which we are extremely proud. Be sure to follow @madebygoogle."

Suruchi Shukla, Head of Global Marketing, Google Store, likewise raised a glass and toasted to the table. “I want to welcome all of you to this wonderful dinner organized by Jaclyn, and team,” she shared. “This is a great opportunity for us, at Google, to introduce our new line of products to you and have you experience them and my hope is that you fall in love with these products as much as we have and tell your friends and family about them. So many are geared toward making your lives easier. As busy, working women we know how important this is. The Google Home Mini we’re gifting to you acts like a mini assistant.”

There were cheers from the table.

Click through the gallery below to enjoy an exclusive BTS look at our holiday dinner with Google Store.

And for any last minute shoppers, you can shop for Google Home or Google Home Mini at Google Store: store.google.com, where you can learn more about Google’s products and offers. Heads up there’s free 2-day shipping on your holiday gifts when you order by 12/19!

When It Comes to Work, You Want to Be Basic

Hear us out.

We’re not saying you’re average, but on average women spend 2.5 hours per week thinking about their wardrobe.

So how about being basic instead?

If your mornings are spent racing through your closet trying to beat the clock, only to have the clock win every. damn. time, it’s high time you reconsider your work wear and incorporate basics into your life. You shouldn't be late to morning meetings because you spent too much time getting dressed. Appearance at the cost of productivity or promptness, isn’t cool.

“Having a wardrobe full of basics makes getting dressed so much easier,” shares Allie Greenberg, Senior Brand Marketing Manager of Richer Poorer, the Cali-based innerwear brand known for its socks, bralettes, and tees you don't want to take off.

“I get to hit the snooze button at least two extra times each morning," says Greenberg, "because I know I can throw on a pair of jeans with an RP tee and look effortless and still totally put together.”

Hence the tag line: "Goes with Levi's...buys ten of them," in reference to the brand's beloved muscle tank.

There are some rad arguments to be made for an office “uniform.” And no, it doesn't make you boring. Or less creative. It makes you smart.

THIS IS THE NEW DAY TO NIGHT DRESSING

If you’re thinking, ‘I’m creative!’ ‘I need my outfits to be creative,’ maybe you'll heed the advice of Richer Poorer Art Director Katherine Wang. “Our tees and tanks are the perfect anchor for creating outfits that are easy but still are unique to me," explains Wang. "I love wearing the crew pocket tee under all the jackets I wear year-round.”

Tara Rynne, Director of Marketing and Merchandising says she now has to "force" herself to wear different things. "RP tees work with every outfit: muscle tanks under jackets, the scoop V with jeans and fun jewelry, and the crew with cons.”

Sounds like a buncha pros.

THE ENDLESS PERKS

Stepping outside-the-box is important when it comes to business. Without a little discomfort, we never progress. (Think about the first time you spoke up in a meeting or asked for a raise... not easy stuff.) You gotta off-road to make inroads.

But when it comes to how you dress, comfort is key. The first step to feeling comfortable in front of others is feeling comfortable with yourself. How you dress and how you feel in your clothing has a major hand in this.

Other perks to working in the best basics brand out there?...

“Wearing super soft tees all day every day. Duh," says Alex Kirk, Marketing and Merchandising Manager. "Dressed up or dressed down, no one’s judging. Our muscle tank is by far my fave. The functionality of this silhouette is endless. Considering I have a bit of a hard time sitting still… at work, at home, driving too fast on my motorcycle, going a little too ham with friends on a Friday night, trying to beat my boyfriend at tennis, golf-- everything, the muscle tank allows me to be comfortable, feel good, and style to every occasion.”

ALL TEE’D UP (EVEN FOR MOMS)

Stop over-thinking it. Basic dressing at work is your hole-in-one.

There isn’t anything you can’t wear with a tee these days. CEO and co-founder Iva Pawling is living proof that being a boss, a mom, and a fashionable babe are not mutually exclusive. Forget struggle, the trifecta is real. Even with 3 1/2 year old son Ford, who rules her roost in the am.

“My child has an incredible ability to be the vortex of my morning minutes, so having a preset uniform of rotating basics has kept me looking like I still have it mildly together (it’s a lie). My muscle tank is my main go-to, whether it's layered under a sweater, dress or tucked into a pair of high waist pants, I feel good in it and can jet out the house quickly.”

Removing the day-to-day thinking about clothes frees up brain space. You need that-- we all need that.

7 Power Gemstones Every Millennial Woman Needs

Rock these rocks. Move mountains.

Behind every powerful woman is herself.

Strong, confident, and often well-accessorized to boot. But we all need a little boost from time to time. With power gemstones from Gorjana, we can be all of the above, plus a little something extra.

Here are our picks for meaningful gems that also offer a daily dose of power.

FOR FOCUS

Do you feel like working in a multi-screen economy has short-circuited your attention span? Us too. We just looked at our phone, our computer screen, checked our email, texted our bestie, and had a convo with our boss. Everyone is on the fritz. But frazzled doesn’t have to be a way of life. Iolite is known for encouraging focus that helps manifest goals and illuminate your inner creative. (Yes, she’s hiding down in there.)

Our suggestion: Wear the Iolite bracelet when brainstorming new ideas or on a 15-minute walk. Some fresh air plus a little power gem help might bring a new perspective.

FOR CALMING

If you’re typing away, feeling frantic, frazzled, and like a chicken with no head, holler at some Howlite.

Used to calm the troubled or overactive mind and induce peaceful sleep, Howlite will also help you develop patience and tolerance and a positive outlook on life. Which means, you might even deal with a cranky colleague with a smile. If you’re feeling like a negative Nancy you can also opt for Smoky Quartz. With grounding properties, this gem helps dissolve negativity on all levels, plus aids with alleviating stress and fear.

Our suggestion: Put this on Sunday night before you get a case of the Mondays.

"Behind every powerful woman is herself."

Tweet this.

FOR COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE

It’s no small feat walking into a job interview, an investor meeting, or up on stage to give a presentation. There are endless big moments throughout your career and jitters are normal and healthy. Snowflake Obsidian helps you regain the courage to persevere and teaches you that life is learning curve. Mistakes are part of the game-- without them we never advance. Or if you want an extra confidence boost, wear Orange Agate to help you know your own truth.

Our suggestion: Throw your nerves a curveball and strack Snowflake Obsidian with Orange Agate. It’s still on you to bring your own thunder, but this combo might make it rain success.

It just might lead to a career homerun.

FOR ENERGY

Millennial burnout is real. If you’re feeling like 2017 has already taken you to the energy cleaners a little garnet can go a long way. Garnet has restorative properties to help with the churn and burn.

Our suggestion: Never take it off. Everyone could use a little energy boost and some help with the work life balance issue we all face.

FOR DREAMS

Here’s to the ones who dream-- there’s nothing foolish about it at all. Big dreams lead to big moves. And if you want to dream bigger there’s a power gemstone for that! Pink Jade has numerous positive properties, but it’s known as a dream stone because it brings insightful dreams. Which sound way better than the dreams where you’re stress packing for five hours.

Our suggestion: wear it to bed, wear it to the movies, never take it off! Never stop dreaming.

Postscript suggestion: stack them all together. Because you know, #strongertogether.

Ladies Clap Back: A Roundup of the Raddest, Baddest Feminist Merch

Every day can be International Women’s Day.

While feminism is far from a new phenomenon, interest around it is at an all-time high. And we are here for it. When Dior’s Paris show last fall featured “We Should All Be Feminists” T-shirts as part of its Spring 2017 collection, the (political) statement took on a whole new meaning. And to give the T even more gravitas, Dior announced that it’s donating a portion of the proceeds to Rihanna’s non-profit organization, the Clara Lionel Foundation (which supports and funds effective education and health programs around the world).

Some background about that T-shirt: Dior collaborated with writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who penned an essay of the same name as an adaptation of Adichie’s 2013 TEDx talk. And if you haven’t yet had the chance to hear the TEDx talk, you might recognize this line: “Feminist: A person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes,” as it appears in Beyonce’s “Flawless.”

Natalie Portman was seen rocking the “We Should All Be Feminists” T-shirt at the Women’s March in L.A., while RiRi stepped out at NYC’s March with a pink THIS P**SY GRABS BACK hoodie, designed by Victoria’s Secret model Leomie Anderson and created by LAPP The Brand.

Even Karl Lagerfeld had a huge feminist-inspired moment in September 2014, when he staged a feminist rally starring the likes of Gisele and Cara, megaphones, and posters of the “He for She,” “Ladies First” and “History is Her Story” variety.

But while Chanel’s “women’s protest” back in 2014 felt like a throwback to a bygone era (and almost felt theatrical in its grandeur), the groundbreaking Women’s March this past January was all too real. And all too necessary in an era where we need to make our voices heard as much as possible. Because this year, shit’s getting REAL.

Consider feminist-inspired gear our way of clapping back to 2017; a way of flexing our feminist muscles and using our voices -- so even if you aren’t heard (and shame on the world if you aren’t), you will be seen. After all, fashion has always been a form of self-expression.

In honor of International Women’s Day, we rounded up some of our favorite feminist-inspired goods: best enjoyed the other 364 days of the year.

THE FUTURE IS FEMALE

Those “The Future is Female” sweatshirts spotted on Cara Delevingne and girlfriend St. Vincent in October 2015 have become an Insta phenomenon (and spawned similar merch like pins and baby onesies). While they might seem like a recent political statement, there is feminist history behind them. According to a New York Times article, the OG “The Future Is Female” T-shirt design was worn by Alix Dobkin in 1975, when photographer Liza Cowan took a picture of Dobkin (her girlfriend at the time) for a slideshow she was working on.

Thirty years later, Rachel Berks, the owner of LA-based shop / graphic design studio Otherwild spotted the photo on the Instagram account, h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y. Berks made 24 T-shirts, which sold out in two days. She made another batch and decided to donate a portion of the proceeds to Planned Parenthood. Soon she introduced the sweatshirt design, and the rest is literally, her-story, as the T has taken on a life of its own.

NASTY WOMAN

Get yourself a “Nasty Woman” T-shirt or reusable bag, made by Amanda and Cameron of Google Ghost (50% of the T-shirt’s proceeds go to Planned Parenthood; 20% of the bag’s proceeds go to the ACLU).

NEVERTHELESS, SHE PERSISTED

Studio15 is a socially responsible fashion brand geared towards millennial women and founded by total boss lady, Jia Wertz. The company supports female entrepreneurs in developing countries by donating a percentage of proceeds to fund women-led businesses in Uganda. The brand launched “The Future Is Female Collection” on Presidents' Day to make a statement against the current administration's comments about women, immigrants and refugees.

For International Women's Day, Casetify released an ENTIRE "Nevertheless, She Persisted" Collection.  Protect your rights. Protect your phone. All in a day's work. CAN YOU HEAR OUR FEMINIST VOICES NOW??

STRONG FEMALE LEAD

One of our favorite “girl gangs” ban.do created this “Strong Female Lead” sweatshirt, among its wide array of other femme-perfect swag.

Stay warm when taking down the patriarchy.

LET'S CALL THEM, ACCES-HERIES

Check your self-ie. Protect your phone with these “Nasty” cases by Casetify

We’re having our cake and eating it too. Feminist blogger slash baker Lyndsay of CocoCakeLand.com whipped up these delicious messages on her sweet creations and was featured in the resistance-leading mag, Teen Vogue, as a result.

Wear your feminist flair with enamel pins, buttons and patches from the likes of jewelry brand Bing Bang NYC (50% of “girl power” swag’s proceeds are donated to women’s organizations) and our favorite “Girls’ Only Club,” The Wing. We love the Bang Bang Bad Bitch Circle Patch or the Girl Power Button Starter Pack.

Speaking of NYC-based The Wing, its feminist merch is a call to arms, especially “The Self Supporting Tote.” The tote's text comes from a call to action written by Anna Cardogen Etz in the early 20th Century. The letter, "Self Supporting Women of Hornell" argued for the creation of a women's club and was printed in the local newspaper in Hornell, New York. (A tote that literally carries the weight of women’s issues.) Or wear your feminism on your keychain.

So let’s make sure feminism is more than simply “a mainstream trend,” and actually becomes the norm. Instead of proclaiming to “Wake up like this,” let's stay woke. Happy International Women’s Day, ladies.

How This Blogger Is Fighting the Plus-Size Retail Problem

Throwing retail a curve ball.

As a size 14/XL fashion blogger, one of my top pet peeves is being denied the experience of brick and mortar shopping.

I would love to spend a Saturday out shopping with girlfriends, but I almost never do it. And here’s why: even though I represent the average size woman in this country, I can’t walk into most brick and mortar stores and fit clothing on my body.

Take J.Crew and Madewell for instance. Two brands that are steeped in Americana and accessibility, unless you wear above a Large in which case you are directed to shop online. Let me repeat, I wear the average size in this country, but I can’t walk into J.Crew and buy a sweater! Does anyone else think that is nuts? My bruised ego aside (and trust me, it is bruised), do these retailers know how much money they are leaving on the table? Jenna Lyons, I love you girl but what are you thinking?!

Looking at it objectively, it’s not hard to see how this came about. As the ultimate luxury good, fashion has always been an industry built on exclusivity. Unless you possess the required means, access and body type, high fashion simply is not available to most.

Maybe the problem is that for too long this high fashion “you can’t sit with us" mindset has trickled down to the retail level, creating a world where average women like myself can’t walk into an average store and shop.

But if the old model is a trickle down from fashion into retail, I think we are starting to see a new model: a trickle up from social media into retail.

"We are starting to see a new model: a trickle up from social media into retail."

Tweet this.

Thanks to social media, body positive women like Ashley Graham, Iskra and their over 6 million combined followers have given a voice to an entire swath of previously ignored women. Women like me who spend on handbags because we can’t walk into a store and buy clothing, or who are too frustrated with shopping to enjoy it as an activity with friends.

Thanks to the influence of social media, we are seeing mass brands start to welcome more of us with open arms. This can only mean a win-win for everyone, retailers included (cha-ching!). Aerie has been at the forefront of this with their popular #unretouched campaign and commitment to inclusive sizing in their brick and mortar stores. At Ann Taylor there are rumblings of a plus line launching this year (yes please!). And while Kate Spade isn't exactly a mass clothing retailer, did you know they carry up to size 16 in store?

I think we all know there’s enough room for everyone in the retail world. And it’s refreshing to see brands starting to wake up! Here’s to hoping the day that I can walk into J.Crew and buy a sweater can’t be far off.

Katie Sturino is a size 12(ish) New Yorker who believes great style can look chic at any size. She started the12ishstyle.com to introduce girls like her who wear sizes 12-18 to fashion forward brands across extended and plus sizes.  Click here to read her piece on Turning "Big" Into Business.

How to Throw a Beautiful Boss Bridal Shower

One for the books.

I've been engaged for the past year to my incredible fiance and it's been an interesting journey with many lessons learned, one of which I wasn't expecting--I'm not great at being a bride. I love throwing parties, hosting events and putting together our conferences, I'm not great at sitting opening gifts and playing the role of the blushing bride-to-be. Don't get me wrong I am so excited about getting married but I know one thing -- I'm better at being the boss than being the bride.

However, going through all the traditions - my bachelorette and now my bridal party -- I've really enjoyed spending time with the amazing women in my life; hearing their stories of marriage, kids, career especially spanning generations. When we started planning the bridal shower, I told my sister I really wanted to work with all female-owned businesses and vendors -- this is something I have made a priority over the past several years, and it's been awesome getting to know so many incredibly talented women.

For my dress, I teamed up with Megan, owner of Lighthouse Bridal and letterpress design in Fort Lauderdale (we met via her email to C&C!). Her selection was incredible featuring brands such as Daughters of Simone and Alexandra Grecco. We landed on me wearing the Farrah from Stone Fox Bride. For all the South Florida brides this is a must stop.

We also worked with Rockstar Catering owned by Rachel Pintarelli, a total boss babe, to come up with a super fun menu. The food and mimosa station was adorned with calligraphy menu's by Natalia from Papel & Co. The lush and bright florals ran across the entire table were orchestrated by Beth from Southern Floral Company and we had incredible succulents courtesy of Shop Succulent owned by Jessica De Gennaro .

The  bridal gift boxes filled with customized treats were from the owner and creator of Chic Sweets, Natalie Clamp. The styling and set up came together with the help Lauren Stewart of Urban Vintage. Guests sat family style at the handmade farm tables by Pat Ryan Designs, adorned with chairs and vintage rentals from husband and wife duo at True Love Decor. The boho antique screen served as a backdrop for opening gifts and was created by the talented Kathy Peterson Inspired.

Nailing the Perfect Office to Party Ensemble with Kate Spade

With winter here, we're on the hunt for the best holiday outfits that not only work for the office, but also double up as a perfect holiday party ensemble. Y'know - anything that makes our hectic schedules even more convenient. Because who has time to leave work early, change, get ready AGAIN, and make it to the party on time?

With the bulk of holiday parties still ahead of you, we tapped some of our favorite fashion bloggers and business ladies to share boss babe party style looks from Kate Spade

THAT'S A WRAP with PURSUIT OF SHOES FOUNDER ASHLEY TORRES

It's not just presents that are for wrapping this season. In a sparkling wrap dress, that can be paired with flats at the office and heels for the party, you've got this in the (cutest little black) bag.

On Ashley: Metallic Multidot Dress, Cameron Street Lane Bag

BLACK & WHITE & OH SO EFFORTLESS with  EFFORTLESS CHIC FOUNDER JEN PINKSTON

Black and white was made for busy bosses. When you don't have time to pattern match, you can get dressed for the day and night faster than you close those deals. Oh, and if it's a rooftop party,  you'll be stylish and cozy in a gorgeous tweed coat.

On Jen: Faux Fur Collar Tweet Coat, Poplin Ruffle Shirt, Abbie Pant, Anastasia HeelsCameron Street Lane Bag

BOSS PANTS NATION with JORDAN SANTOS

Power babes in power outfits, with a few key accessories. In a high-waist pant and crisp white button-down, heading from your desk to festive drinks has never looked so good.

On Jordan: Silk Alyssa Top, Shimmer Tweed Jacket, Cameron Street Lane Bag

THE LADY IN LILAC with NIKIA PHOENIX

There may be songs about ladies in red, but this winter opt for soft colors like lilac because pretty pastel hues aren't just for spring. Go romantic and sophisticated.

On Nikia: Jia Dress, Malerie CoatCameron Street Lane Bag

THE CASUAL CREATIVE with LILLIAN BABIAN, FOUNDER OF STUDS AND SAPPHIRES

Casual meets classic with a high waist denim and white button-down. Sometimes when everything is up in the air, you want something simple and sweet. And a monogrammed bag is the perfect addition to this classic look.

Outfits You'll Want to Work Hard to Buy

There's a reason we call it the happiest season of all.

Oh it's the most wonderful weekend of all. Black Friday has come to be as important to the holidays as stockings on your chimney. And we couldn't be more thankful. Especially with the caliber of clothing offered luxe Italian retailer Luisa Via Roma

From the above Aciel White Cotton Poplin Shirt to the Aquazzura Napa Leather Flats, there is plenty to pine after. (BTW: Hammock also for sale.)

And if you’re lusting after a certain luxury piece, but can’t yet afford it, these items will convince you to put your nose to the grindstone and work until you own it.

A long pale pink dress is useful year round. During the winter months pair it with boots and a turtleneck to stay warm. A gray Emporio Armani turtle will do the trick. In the spring wear the Attico Satin Slip Dress solo and take advantage of the thigh-high slits. The Skogsberg&Smart vase vase pulls double duty as well. Use it as a candle holder or fill it with white lilies to match the winter landscape.

Looking to make a statement at your friend's holiday fete? Shourouk Ramses Black earringsare white and gold, the colors of the season. They're also dazzling danglers. Don't want to show up empty handed? The House of Hackney Pineapple candleholder is better than a bottle of wine (and lasts longer too). For a button-down that works with both a red leather skirt for nights on the town and back in the office on Monday, VETEMENTS padded shoulders cotton poplin shirt is a winner.

A cropped cashmere turtleneck? It's just the right amount of naughty and nice. And you should put something like it in on your xmas list. It's great for wearing around the office with a pair of high waist pants. Even better for flaunting a tiny smidgen of your mid-drift, even when the snow drift is piling high. If you like rocking high-necked styles, also check out this dot mesh and lace crepe top from British label Self Portrait.  And if you want to get a little crazy with your bottoms, these Vionnet Musical Printed pants are the way to go.

A Bitossi Ceramiche Hen Ceramic figure might not work as a purse, but it's certainly of the season and looks cute tucked up under your arm (or in your hallway entry). And with Marni Cropped Light Twisted Flannel Pants and Aquazzura Christy Lace Up Pumps, people are going to be more focussed on the bottom half of your outfit anyway.

For more holiday outfit inspo visit Luisa Via Roma. Black Friday sales are happening! Use the CODE: BFKEEP20 for an extra 20% off sale from Nov 23-24 & from Nov 25-28 the discount is applied automatically at checkout.

Rashida Jones Launches New Jewelry Collection with Iconery

Don't call it a collab.

Making a statement. You can do it with words and you can do it with jewelry. Rashida Jones, whose new jewelry collection was unveiled today, has now done both. The actress and activist partnered with Iconery, the online destination for jewelry fanatics, to design a collection that drew on personal memories, using, for instance, her father's pinky ring as the model for her Square Ring.

“I wanted a return to Seventies, Eighties bold, iconic symbols and what better way to do it than make it yourself?” Jones explained to WWD

Which is exactly what Iconery allows. It's also why founder and CEO Ivka Adam makes it clear that this is Jones' collection, not a collaboration. "We 'power' fine jewelry collections," Adam says. "In other words, we facilitate the design, manufacturing and distribution of collections on behalf of celebrities, influencers, and brands. They come to us to make their design vision a reality, and building their own brand is more important than ours."

Adam launched Iconery last year on the premise of producing fine jewelry on-demand using 3D printers. Early on she made the decision to "power other brands rather than build our own. From my background at eBay, where I worked with collectibles sellers around the world, I fell in love with supporting other people’s passions."

Still, the partnership between the brand and celebrity have to align. Andrea Linett, founding Creative Director of Lucky mag and, now Iconery's Creative Director, explains why Jones was the perfect choice for the company's first celebrity line. "The people we choose really have a point of view, which is what Iconery is all about," says Linett. "We bring an authenticity to the collections when they’re designed by influencers and 'cool girls' — they know what they want and they actually get to make it and share it with everyone."

Adam echoed this thought. "First and foremost, she [Rashida] embodies 'the Iconery girl:' she’s cool, kind, independent, and informed. While we’re still a young company we have to be very deliberate in how we build our brand and where we spend our resources. We want to bring collections to life for people we admire and adore working with, who also help communicate our values to the world."

"We want to bring collections to life for people we admire and adore working with."

Tweet this.

"Second," Adam says, "[Andrea] already had a relationship with Rashida so the trust was immediately there. It made the business side of the process much easier and efficient, and Andrea 'got' Rashida’s vision for the collection."

Adam maintains that now is the right time for a celeb collection for a few reasons. "In our first year of being live," she explains, "we’ve already launched collections for several influencers and fashion designers.  We started by working with those with whom we had a relationship. They had to fit into our brand ethos, but it was important to start with friends so we could get real, honest feedback to improve our process."

Now they will be tracking how various influencers, celebrities, and brands convert differently. "My hypothesis is that people who have smaller, more engaged followings convert better," Adam says, "but the big names build brand awareness and trust. We deliberately waited to launch a celebrity until we really felt like we had everything in order."

In order and ready for order. The Rashida Jones Collection which includes a mix of statement rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, launched today! There’s a Mariner chain necklace, square hoop earrings, a chunky square ring with an offset black diamond, and other pieces that use symbols like the ankh and hamsa. Of the collection, Jones says, "I like the idea that we wear jewelry to unite us and protect us in core beliefs. We need that right now."

And you need a piece from this collection.
