Millennial Burnout Is Real. The Question Is: Do You Have It?

We want to do it all. At what cost?

We want to do it all—but what happens if doing it all drives us to a place where we can't get anything done?

Millennials are not invincible—but we love to tell ourselves we are. I recall multiple occasions when concerned friends and family members warned me, "Careful you don't burn out!" And I recall as many occasions when I just shrugged it off before heading to my next commitment.

For most millennials, it starts in high school when you’re expected to take on countless extracurriculars. College is no breeze, but you get through it with the grades your parents expect and with a smattering of internships you somehow tuck between classes. Your friends are right there with you, juggling it all and joking that “overworked” is the new “normal.”

But then there’s adulthood.

I dove head-first into my first job while handling two apartment moves, a hectic social life, and then—because I wasn’t stressed enough—I took on additional volunteer work. My high school and college self could handle juggling, but I quickly realized I hadn’t accounted for the real world pressures of independence and a competitive work environment.

The trouble with burnout is that it strikes when you least expect it. You're overworked, overstimulated, and striving for excellence in a world that sets the bar high. And as a millennial, you’re setting your own bar even higher.

The trouble with burnout is that it strikes when you least expect it.

We know ourselves better than anyone, yet we internalize societal pressures and put aside our needs. We want to strengthen our personal brand, maintain an active social life, all while striving for that sweet work-life balance—when balance means we just sort of never stop working.

We. Are. Tired.

And who can blame us? Fortunately, though, we can change that. Here are signs you’re nearing burnout and some ways to stop it before it happens.

SIGN 1: Someone asks what’s most important in your life and your answer is ‘everything.’

We want to do it all. But what happens if doing it all means sacrificing healthy sleeping and eating habits? Not worth it.

You know the word “prioritize,” but a lot of millennials struggle with the concept. There's so much to do, and in the Digital Age, it feels like everything needs to be done immediately. Ever have someone give you a hard time about not texting them back immediately? I hate to break it to you, but you can’t do it all at the same time. You’ll burn yourself out, guaranteed.

SOLUTION: SLOW DOWN + STREAMLINE

I say it's time to cut some of the dead weight. Start by taking a look at your schedule for the next week. Is there anything you'll be doing that fills you with dread? See if there's a way to maneuver yourself out of it. Our entrepreneurial tendencies mean we often say “yes” to every opportunity. But people will be supportive of your need to take a step back. Be honest about your concerns, say no, then stick to it.

Next, try making a to-do list. It may seem archaic, but listing out what needs to be done per day and then checking those items off your list can give you a great sense of accomplishment. It will also allow you to visualize what’s most important and what can be left for another day.

SIGN 2: You panic if you leave your iPhone (and thus instagram) at home

As millennials, we've been raised with limitless information and countless ways to communicate. We’re encouraged to build our identities on social media, reinforcing our public image with well-edited photos of party going and staged selfies. That’s a lot of pressure, and it’s time consuming. Suddenly, the need to share means we’re permanently plugged into our devices.

SOLUTION: DON'T GIVE IN TO THE PRESSURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Remember that you exist in the present and that person is enough. If your work life isn’t contingent on your social presence (meaning you’re not working as a social media marketer), reevaluate your participation on social platforms.

How often are you pulling up Twitter or Instagram to share? Try actually counting how many times a day you open the app. The results might be staggering, but you’ll have to face your problem honestly.

That time can be better spent sleeping, cooking healthy meals, or exercising. Yes, these options may initially seem less appealing (thanks to social media, too many of us have no sense of how to be alone), but they can drastically improve your overall health and energy levels.

  • Put your phone in another room before you go to bed so you won’t be tempted to check it in the middle of the night or immediately when you wake up.

  • Consider committing to only checking Instagram (or Twitter or Facebook) once a day.

  • Disable your push notifications. They’re both tempting and distracting. You’ll be more productive without them.

  • The next time you plan a fun activity or take a trip, commit to not photographing it. Instead, just focus on enjoying it.

SIGN 3: You know your body needs a quiet night in, but when friends text, you wind up going for yet another night out. that’s five days in a row.

This may seem like an obvious point, but we often forget to take care of ourselves. We get a text from a friend asking to meet for dinner as the workday comes to an end. Instead of heading home to get an early night’s rest, we talk ourselves into meeting for happy hour and feel pressured into the next bar or restaurant down the street.

SOLUTION: MANAGE EXPECTATIONS AND PRACTICE SAYING “NO”

It’s difficult to tell your friend no because you want to sleep. Chances are, they’ll put on the pressure and make a few jokes at your expense. But that extra time for self-care is crucial to avoid burnout. You will miss many more happy hours if you’re completely exhausted, depressed, stressed, or even physically ill. As hard as it may be to make time for it, self-care is crucial.

  • If you’re like most millennials, you may need to actually schedule your nights in so you don’t make plans on top of them. Put them on your calendar and stick to them.

  • Consider limiting drinking to weekends. Late nights are exhausting, but you’ll only feel more run-down if you’re dehydrated and hungover.

  • For the friends who tend to pressure, make advanced plans and offer them the specific days you’re available. Then they won’t expect you to text on the nights you’re not.

  • Single? Delete your dating apps. If you’re feeling frantic and exhausted, you’re not going to be your interesting self anyway. Make your self-care your priority until things calm down. Trust us, Tinder will be there when you get back.

Whether you’re on the cusp or already drowning in a pool of burnout, it’s never too late to take your life into your hands. Reflect on how you got to where you are, cut yourself some slack, then use our tips to get back on track. As millennials, we hate the thought but: sometimes we need to take a step back to move forward.

Do you think millennial burnout is a real thing? Why or why not? Chime in below.

Money Matters: Shannon McLay, Founder of The Financial Gym

“Every step, no matter how painful, presented an opportunity to learn, grow, get smarter and improve the business.”

In this month’s installment of our monthly Money Matters series, we’re sitting down with ShannonMcLay, the founder of The Financial Gym, a financial training program that offers one-on-one advice to help you reach your money goals. We got down to business, asking Shannon the nitty-gritty about her business, including how she saves, spends, and invests in her company’s future. Read on to see why Shannon should be your new BFF (best financial friend).

Where do you think is the most important area for a business owner to focus their financial energy?

I think the most important area for a business owner to focus on is expenses. It doesn’t matter how much money your business is making, if you’re not retaining most of the revenue because your expenses are under control, then it’s not a healthy business. I have a client whose business generates $1.2MM per year, but she’s only taking home $20,000 and she can barely afford the expenses around her business.

What was your first big expense as a business owner?

The first things I invested in was legal advice on how to set up my business properly and a designer to help me set up my first website.

How did you decide what to pay yourself?

Before I had any investor money, I didn’t pay myself anything, especially since the business was operating on losses. After I raised my first round of money, I paid myself $5,000 a month. It wasn’t enough to sustain my personal expenses, but it was a balance between what I could use personally and what I needed to leave in the business account to survive.

Every step, no matter how painful, presented an opportunity to learn, grow, get smarter and improve the business.

How did you decide what to pay employees?

I offered my first employee $50,000 per year salary and she negotiated back with $70,000, but I told her I couldn’t pay her more than I was paying myself, so we settled on $60,000 and we both made $60,000 for the first year she worked for me.

What are your top three largest expenses every month?

Payroll, Rent, Office Supplies

How much do you spend on office space?

We have two gym locations, our HQ and our initial gym space and the two combined rents cost us $30,000 per month.

How much do you spend on employee salaries?

Our current payroll runs around $130,000 a month for full-time staff and $15,000 in contractors.

How much are you saving? When did you start being able to save some of your income?

We are not in a position to save money each month since we are actively growing our business and spending extra money on marketing to fuel our growth.

What apps or software are you using for finances? How did you decide when to hire a financial advisor (if you have one)?

We like using Quickbooks for our business and we wouldn’t hire a financial advisor since that’s what we do for a living.

Do you wish you’d done anything differently in your financial journey as a business owner?

I have certainly made some large financial mistakes where the business is concerned, but I wouldn’t change a single thing about my journey. Every step, no matter how painful, presented an opportunity to learn, grow, get smarter and improve the business.

Why should women talk about money?

Money is our lifeblood. Whether we feel connected to our money or not, we need it to operate in this world and more importantly, we need it to have power and authority and I truly believe that our financial situation prevents us from being and making the changes we want to see in the world.

The Evolution of Celeb Seeding & If It's Still Worth It

What you got in that swag bag?

Give it away, give it away. Now.

While celebrity endorsements have always been a “thing,” celeb seeding really took off in the '90s and early 2000s with the rise of brands and products like Juicy Couture and the trucker hat.

Back in the day it was almost impossible to leaf through a magazine without a glimpse of Paris Hilton in a fuzzy pink track suit or Ashton Kutcher topped off with an ironic mesh hat.

If it was not a paid for endorsement or gifting suite, celebrity seeding was a tricky process that involved multiple steps and a lot of finger crossing. PR pros tasked with gifting had to identify the best contact (stylist, manager, assistant, best-friends-little-sister’s-cousin) and pray that the item landed in the hands of the actual celebrity rather than some handler along the way.

There was also the mind-numbing time spent pouring over photo databases hunting for a celeb wearing your brand on their most recent Starbucks run. Finally, someone in PR typically needed to pitch those hard-won images to media contacts and hope the photo was strong enough for inclusion in a story. There were few guarantees and lots of product was sent out into the void never to be heard from again.

With the evolution of social media, seeding has evolved. The playing field has opened up and now includes influencers who can go direct to their audience via their own Instagram, Snapchat, or other. Social media has given brands hungry for endorsement new and more direct avenues for both outreach, contact, and end-consumer visibility.

Outside of the products that influencers are personally fanning out for, now, with a little luck, a well-timed tweet, comment, or share has the potential to catch the eye of an actual tastemaker with a larger social following. In a sense, social media has helped reduce those six degrees of separation to just one and has given brands a more instant gratification with fewer obstacles to navigate.

To seed or not to seed

At some point it seems every woman is offered the following euphemism, maybe by an old-fashioned parent or an overprotective brother, “Why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free?” This passive-aggressive advice would certainly not win any praise from Amber Rose, and it doesn’t play well in the world of influencer marketing either.

Seeding and gifting are a necessary part of most consumer-product marketing strategies, and while they come with very few assurances, one strategic placement has the power to move the needle right off the scale.

Like every marketing initiative, it is important to weigh the pros and cons of gifting and to always consider timing and target.

A few basic tips for giving the milk away for free:

Find Your Muse - If you sell leather handbags, don’t gift a vegan celeb or blogger. If you make anti-aging cream, don’t go after a YouTuber with a fan base of 10 million 13-year-olds. Consider the look and feel of what you’re hoping to promote and who the tastemaker is reaching.

Become A Subtle Stalker For Good (not evil) – If you don’t have a relationship in place, try to suss out the best point of contact. Maybe you can find a way to go direct, via a mutual contact or find a reliable team member to start the conversation.

Pick A Winner - Make sure you are sharing a product that is so new and hot it will stand out or a tried and true classic that everyone would be happy to have. Don’t use gifting as a time to get rid of your “clunkers.”

Keep It In Your Pocket – Identify whether you have a product that makes sense to gift. While more outreach and product seeding is likely to increase the potential for a return, it’s important to really look at your costs and margins and come up with a cold hard number gifting budget that you can stick too.  With seeding, more is often more, but not if it puts you out of business.

Feeling Myself  - If you design fine jewelry, coordinate trips to Bali, or are offering something with a very high price point, gifting needs to come with some kind of guarantee. A high price tag will often create leverage to secure just the kind of coverage you’re hoping for.

Continue To Subtly Stalk (without being annoying) – Follow up is important. Influencer, celebs and the people who work with them are inundated and harangued by people trying to give them stuff all the time (tough life).  It is important to try and get a definitive sense of interest via reasonable follow-up. Don’t be too extra; after one or two follow up emails let it go… otherwise you just seem crazy.

Channel Your Inner Bad Ass and Dig In – Seeding should be done consistently with the launch of each new product or collection. Just because you want Kylie Jenner to IG your natural lip balm it doesn’t mean she will, but if you work at it long enough and hone your approach, you will develop a few tried and true contacts that will give your brand the love it deserves. If all else fails and it’s within your budget, hire a pro to handle your seeding initiative(s) for you.

3 Things To Consider Before Becoming A Digital Nomad

Choosing to work and travel the world is now easier than ever.

It seems like everywhere we look, more and more people are choosing to become digital nomads and embracing the #workfromanywhere lifestyle. While the thought of living and working on the road is what a lot of people aspire to do, it’s important to realize that once you take the leap, it isn’t all just sangria on the coast of Spain (although that is an added perk).

When you’re thinking about becoming location independent, either working remotely for a company, freelancing, or realizing that your current business simply requires an internet connection and a good cup of coffee... it’s important to remember these three things:

Slow Travel Is Sustainable Travel

When you’re starting this new chapter of your life, odds are you’re going to want to book a ticket around the world and head to a different country every week. Heed my advice: slow travel is sustainable travel.

If being a digital nomad or location independent is something you want to keep up for a while, make an effort to be in one place for 3 to 4 weeks at a time so you can truly make the most of your experience.

Being on the road takes time and energy, but when you’re fully immersed in a place for around a month, there are endless benefits. You’ll be able to feel settled, create a routine, and most importantly be able to be present instead of worrying about the next plane ticket you have to buy or when the next train leaves.

When you opt for slower travel, it also allows you to become fully immersed in the culture you’re in. When you’re in a new country or city for 4 to 5 days, you’ll only just scratch the surface of what it has to offer.

Learn How To Work Smarter, Not Harder

Don’t believe the Instagram hype. Being a digital nomad doesn’t mean that you’ll be on the beach in the Amalfi Coast all day long or ziplining through Guatemala from sunrise to sundown. While these new experiences might be part of your journey, don’t forget that you’ll still need to work to pay the bills (and lattes).

Choosing to work from anywhere will force you to work smarter, not harder. With new experiences, people, and places at your fingertips, you’ll learn how to get the essentials done in less time so you can enjoy where you are.

A few ways to keep things under control especially when starting out....

  • When planning your travel, think about where your team or clients are based so that you don’t have to work odds hours. Let’s be real, conference calls at 2 am in Thailand isn’t ideal.

  • Create a new schedule that allows you to still respect your ideal working hours while you’re on the road so you can stay balanced and happy while still checking off items on your to-do list.

  • Consider spending “off-peak” hours exploring so that you aren’t stuck behind a computer all day long. If you’re traveling through Europe and your team is in the U.S., consider taking the morning hours to get to know your new city so that when everyone else is headed into the office (6 hours later) you’ll be readily available without regret.

Find Community That Fosters Deep Connection

“Why do I need to find community? I have my friends and family at home as my support system.”

While that may be true, one of the things that connects us as human beings is shared experiences. When you start life on the road, you’ll find yourself longing for real connections with others who are on the same path. Loneliness as a location independent worker is real.

While you’ll meet a lot of new people, it’s important to go the extra mile to foster relationships that aren’t just surface level.

Many people who work and travel choose to stay at coliving spaces exactly for that reason. Coliving is an up-and-coming trend where you live and work with other like-minded people for a period of time, normally between 2 - 8 weeks.

Something I’ve seen time and time again at one of the leading coliving spaces in Europe is when you’re in a place that offers both personal and professional development, you seem to connect on a deeper level. Sharing a space and certain experiences with others positively impacts life on the road and creates long-lasting friendships.

Choosing to work and travel the world is now easier than ever and such a rewarding experience at the same time. Be sure to do your research before you get ready to take the leap and remember that slow and steady wins the race. You want to make the most of your digital nomad experience and when you set yourself up for success before even leaving home, you’ll have that much more of an opportunity to thrive along the way.

15 Signs to Step It Up at Work

It's not her, it's you. Or is it? S.O.S.

In an ideal world, your boss tells you when you're doing something wrong. But sometimes people avoid the hard conversations. We've got some common warning signs to watch out for.

1. She stops giving you large assignments

If you were initially given a chance to work on large assignments, but now you’re only assigned small (maybe even seemingly unnecessary) tasks, something’s gone awry. It’s possible your boss wasn’t impressed with your prior work. Whether it’s paying better attention to detail, logging longer hours, or having a direct conversation with her to get some feedback, you should do something about it now. Tackling bigger projects is your bargaining chip for future promotions.

2. She reassigns your work to a coworker

Take a look at your current work load. Is it different from when you first started? You might have felt like you nailed your last project, but if you notice that your coworker seems to be taking on more work, while your assignments dwindle, stop to consider. This may be your boss’s attempt to balance, but if you feel like you could be doing more and aren’t getting invited to do so, consider approaching her about it. You want to make sure she knows you’re ready and able to assume additional responsibility.

3. She does your work herself

Some of us may have completed an assignment or conducted research for our manager only to find that she redid it herself (ouch!). This might not actually be as bad as it looks. Sometimes the instructions were unclear, or she wanted you to focus on something else so she finished it up herself. But it doesn’t hurt to clarify. If she’s unhappy with your work, you should discuss ways to improve for next time.

4. She calls a lot of meetings to “discuss your work”

We’ve all experienced a manager who loves meetings. However, if your boss calls a meeting more than once to discuss your work, or the quality of your work, then she’s probably trying to guide you. She may be subtly telling you that your work isn’t up to par. Try to listen without taking offense. A simple fix may make it better, for her and for you.

5. She edits most of your work

I cringe sometimes at the red underlines and blue scribbles I see when my manager edits my writing, and the meetings afterward to discuss the edits are awkward, too. If you embrace the feedback, though, over time the reds and blues will decrease. If you don’t see a marked change after a few attempts, chances are you’re at an impasse with your writing styles. That’s when you’ll want to consider addressing it directly with her.

6. “I love it... but...”

We’ve been programmed to expect the worst when we hear the word “but,” and it’s usually for good reason. Some managers are sensitive to their employees’ feelings so they add a cushion to their negative response when reviewing work. Watch out for these phrases—it may take some reading between the lines to determine what your boss actually wants from you. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification, either. Just because she’s not always comfortable with direct feedback doesn’t mean you don’t deserve it.

7. She drops you from a group project

If you start working on a team project, but suddenly you find yourself removed from the email chain? Warning sign. The change in guard could have to do with work load and strategy rather than you specifically, but it’s always good to address it. Letting your boss know you were excited about the project and would love to be considered for a future one is one way to open the conversation. Ask her if there’s anything you could do better for a future opportunity.

8. She micromanages

All bosses have different management styles, but if she feels the need to give you step-by-step guidance on every project, even those you’ve done before, there might be a trust issue. Consider broaching the subject from the perspective of her time. Tell her you don’t want to take up her limited work hours and ask whether there’s a better way for you to work independently. The conversation should reveal any concerns she might have about your work.

9. “You should know by now”

When you first get a job, you’re given a probation period where you get the chance to show what you can do but also learn the business. If you find that your boss starts to bring up the fact that you’ve been at the company long enough to know how something works without feedback, she’s probably hinting (in a not so subtle way) that you need to step up your game.

10. She starts nitpicking and sniping

As time progresses at your company, you may notice that your manager is becoming more irritable when you approach her.  Maybe she starts pointing out every little error you make, leaving you with this feeling that you can’t do anything right. We’re all personalities beyond our job descriptions and, frankly, that means we sometimes get on each other’s nerves. If your boss continues to lash out in small ways, you can still make a comeback. Triple-check your work before turning it in so those small mistakes don’t happen. After all, they really shouldn’t, should they? If it truly feels like unfair treatment, though, consider addressing it with her or your HR department.

11. She condescends

Yes, she has more experience than you but professionalism dictates that she should treat you with respect even if you aren’t on her “level” at the company. If she condescends from the start, it’s probably just a sign she’s not a great manager (and that’s another story entirely). But if your boss suddenly starts talking to you as if you’re a child or not on her level when she’s previously worked well with you, she may be tired of the less-than-excellent work you’ve been turning in. The key word here is ‘suddenly’.

12. You ask her for a certain opportunity but it goes to someone else

All of us love to take on new and exciting opportunities, and we should relay this to our bosses or managers. However, if an opportunity comes up, and you make it known you’re interested in taking it on, and your manager gives it to someone else, she may not think you’re up for the job.

13. She gives you poor scores on your annual review

This is probably the most obvious sign (if you can even call it that). If your scores on your annual review seem to be decreasing every time, there’s no doubt about how your boss feels about your work

14. She "inadvertently" skips you in update meetings

This can be totally disheartening, but if she stops asking you for updates on your projects or doesn’t ask you to share in team huddles, she’s probably hinting that she’s uninterested in the work you’re doing currently.

15. Her energy toward you has just... changed

Interaction styles vary among managers. Some are open and approachable while others prefer to keep their office door closed most of the time. If you were once “cool” with your manager and for some reason she starts avoiding your morning chats over coffee, she’s probably intentionally distancing herself for one reason or another. It doesn’t hurt to ask her why.

What you can do

If you notice any of these signs, here’s what you can do:

  • Ask your manager directly how she feels about your work and areas where you can improve

  • Ask a coworker who seems to be thriving to give you some pointers regarding your manager’s preferences

  • Ask for feedback from your manager and coworkers monthly

  • Evaluate your work and ask coworkers (whom you trust) to review your work before turning it in

Desk-Side: This Actor & Blogger Shares How She Finds Balance When Working From Home

“The best part about being a blogger is getting to connect with women from all over the world.”

Courtney Halverson is a busy woman. An actor by day and an influencer—well, also by day, she spends her waking hours running lines, shooting content, and blogging about all of it on her site, Pretty Little Fawn. So when she gets time to relax, she really takes advantage. We partnered with Glade® Essentials Room Mist to hear how Courtney puts a little balance in her hustle—read on below!

Q: How long have you been in Los Angeles?

A: I’ve lived in LA for about six years.

Q: What’s something most people don’t know about you?

A: Fun fact about myself, I can turn the shower on with my feet.

Q: How long have you been acting? What do you love most about it?

A: I have been working as an actress since I was a kid. I actually just had a film come out set in the 1950s, which is great because I love all things vintage. But the best part about being an actress, is getting to become a lot of different people. I mean, I have worn a lot of different hats.

Q: What are your essential tools when prepping for a role?

A: A cup of coffee (needed), a highlighter, and whatever script I’m currently working on.

Q: What’s your favorite room in your house?

A: My favorite part of the house is definitely the cloffice (closet-office). It’s definitely my happy place in the house because it’s where I get to work on my other job of being a blogger. It’s where I style looks, create content, and do what I call “research,” a.k.a. reading magazines.

Q: Since you work from home a lot of the time, how do you instill work/life balance in your space?

A: After a long day of learning lines and writing blog posts, I like to relax in my living room. For me, it’s all about unwinding and setting the mood. The Glade® Essentials Room Mist is my go-to—I love the Mandarin & Mimosa scent. It helps clear my mind and let me know work is done for the day.

The best part about being a blogger is getting to connect with women from all over the world.

Q: Who is your style icon?

A: 100 percent Alexa Chung.

Q: What’s the best part about being a blogger?

A: The best part about being a blogger is getting to connect with women from all over the world. Second best part? Creating content.

Making Moves: First Female CEOs, TED Talks, & Record-Breaking Films

Another week, another batch of inspiring women.

Every Friday, we here at C&C like to celebrate all of the incredible contributions women are making in the world. And as always, this was a good week for women. Read on to see women being featured in film festivals, moving up in business, and more!

Activist, writer, and educator Brittany Packnett gave her first TED Talk ever this week. The subject of the talk: confidence! Packnett says she has been working her whole life for this moment, speaking at the event TED2019: Bigger Than Us in Vancouver on April 16th.

She’s moving on up! Corie Barry, the current CFO of Best Buy, will become the company’s first-ever female CEO. Barry will become one of the few CEOs to head an S&P 500 Company and will officially take the role this June. Talk about being a boss!

“What, like it’s hard?” Kim Kardashian West is taking a page out of Elle Woods’s book and is planning to become a lawyer. KKW informed Vogue that she’s been studying law for the past year as part of a four-year apprenticeship available for those who did not attend law school. She is scheduled to take the bar exam in 2022 and credits her work helping Alice Marie Johnson get out of prison for this new endeavor.

Lights, camera, more female representation! This week, the Cannes film festival revealed its official selection of films to be screened this year. The News? They’ve tied their record for the most films directed by women to be considered for jury prizes, with four. More female directors are to be featured as well, with 13 of the 51 directors being women. To top it all off, the official poster (above) was made as an homage to female filmmaker Agnès Varda.

How to Work out Without Leaving Your Desk

Get your blood flowing and body moving without pulling yourself away from your to-do list.

We all know that spending too much time in the office can take a toll on your mental and physical health. Anyone who’s scarfed down a sad salad desk lunch knows that not being able to pull yourself away from your computer can be taxing. Buuuut sometimes that’s life.

We’ve got good news! When you just can’t escape your chair, we’ve got some tips to keep you happy and healthy. Yeah, that definitely includes a big cup of coffee and some pretty desk accessories, but we don’t stop there!

With this desk workout, you can get your blood flowing and body moving without pulling yourself away from your to-do list. It’s simple, yet targeted enough to help you tone and tighten right from your desk chair. Pair this with a walk on your break, and you’ll reap the physical and mental benefits of exercise, all before happy hour! Now that’s work-life balance.

Are you ready for the workout? Let’s go!

Chair Squat/Air Sit

Start seated at the end of your chair with heels firmly planted into the ground. Sit up tall with your chest lifted and core engaged. Press your heels into the floor to lift your booty off the chair about 2 inches. Hold and hoover for about 30 seconds.

Glute Squeeze x15 (to avoid dead booty!)

This is an isometric move to get your booty woke. Squeeze your glutes as hard as you can and hold for 10 seconds. Release and repeat.

Toe Touches x20

Seated, reach your right arm straight toward the sky, extend your left leg, and engage your core to lift the leg as you lower the arm to touch your toe. Lower and repeat, alternating sides.

Tricep Dips x15

Start seated on the edge of a stationary chair. Position your hands shoulder-width apart on the chair, then move your booty off the front with your legs extended out in front of you (the straighter your legs, the harder you'll work).

Begin to bend your arms to 90 degrees as you lower your hips toward the floor. Straighten your arms, squeezing into your triceps and lifting your hips. Lower and repeat.

Bicycle Crunches x20

Seated, gently place your hands behind your head, elbows out wide. Sit up tall with your chest lifted. Lift your left knee toward your chest as you rotate through the spine, twisting your right elbow across to the left side of your body. Return to start and repeat, alternating sides.

The Importance of Mentors & How to Find Them

They are out they and they want to be found.

"Get mentors." That's Alexa von Toble's advice to young entrepreneurs.

Von Toble, who remains CEO of LearnVest, the financial planning company which sold for more than $250 million in 2015, echoes something we've always promoted at Create & Cultivate.

Mentors are not only a wealth of information for the career-driven young-preneur, they also help boost your confidence by given you actionable advice. Something we consider vital when you're starting out.

So why mentors?

Mentors are inspiring

Ask any successful person about their career trajectory and they will always cite people who have inspired them. They have stories that push us to work harder. They've made mistakes we can learn from. They have wins that keep us going.

It's like having an inspirational professional playbook.

Mentors tell you when you should do better

Constructive criticism is easier to take from a mentor than from a boss. If you've chosen one or two people who you really trust, then you can remove any workplace issues or resentments that make it hard to hear what your boss (or superior) is saying.

No one likes being told that they're wrong. Or that their work needs improvement. But when it is coming from an objective third party, it's much easier to stomach and will likely inspire you to *gasp* do better.

Mentors have key relationships

If you impress your mentor, chances are they are going to find a way to connect you to other people who matter, professionally speaking. Often this can happen naturally. People who are willing to be mentors like connecting the dots and as such, will connect the dots.

Plus paying it forward is a win-win. When you are in a position to introduce them or connect them to new clients, do it.

Mentors know what it takes to make it

Work. Work. Work. Work. Work. That's what it takes, and when you're midnight-deep in another oil burner at the office, and you don't think you can do it anymore, a text to your mentor that reminds you they were once (and probably still are — because making it means even later hours) in the same boat, goes a long way.

They've also heard "NO" a million ways and never gave up.

A little bit of encouragement from someone you respect and trust? That's the juice that turns into a money-making smoothie.

Just because you’ve made it, doesn’t mean you don’t need a mentor

Sophia Rivka Rossi co-founder of HelloGiggles, has “made it” by most professional standards. The feel-good company online platform was acquired by TIME last year for an estimated $30 million. And yet, when speaking with Elizabeth Rice and Julie Cutler, co-founders of SoulCycle, she cited both women as her mentors, and who she continues to look to for for inspiration. Smart, savvy, successful business women never stop learning. It's how you grow. Even when you think you're tall AF — there are still professional inches to be gained.

Where to find them

One, at Create & Cultivate. Have you become an insider yet?

Two, six degrees of separation is real. One very simple way to see who knows who you want to know, is to look through who your friends follow on Instagram. You'd be surprised to find out how interwoven our lives are. Then, craft that DM and tell person X that you'd love to bring them coffee and take 15 minutes of their time.

It could be the beginning of an amazing working relationship.

Desk-Side: This Successful Style Influencer Shares What It Takes to Build a Full-Time Blogging Career

“Sometimes I wish that I had a superpower where I snap my fingers and everything is organized.”

If you’re looking for a new style muse, look no further than Sheryl Luke. As the voice behind Walk in Wonderland, she’s made her blog her full-time venture—something many of us only dream of doing. That’s why we partnered with Glade® Essentials Room Mist to hear Sheryl’s advice on what it takes to become a blogger and influencer full-time. See her sage wisdom below!

Q: How long has LA been your home?

A: I’ve lived in Los Angeles for about 13 years. I live with my husband and my puppy.

Q: How long have you been a blogger? What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger?

A: I’ve been blogging for about five years now. The most rewarding part about being a full-time blogger is that I get to make my own work schedule.

Q: How do you start your day?

A: To start my day I love a fresh cup of coffee, and I love a clean scent.

Q: What tips do you have for someone looking to be a blogger?

A: For anyone starting in the industry, my tip would be to have a good, strong work ethic. I think that’s gotten me to where I am.

Q: What is the most challenging aspect of being an influencer?

A: Because I live and work in the same space, I have to find new ways of staying productive, so my productivity hack is actually getting ready. It keeps me in my work mode all day long. I’m super blessed to be doing what I’m doing, but if there’s one thing that I find challenging is constantly staying creative. But the fun part is I get to dress up every day and work with a ton of amazing friends from fashion to beauty and lifestyle. My typical work day is answering my emails, scouting locations, prepping looks. But if there’s one thing I wish I had more time for is actually shooting.

Q: How do you create an inspiring workspace even when you’re working from home?

A: Through scent. I use Glade Essentials Room Mist Mandarin & Mimosa and the bright scent keeps me going all day long. I wish you could smell it; it reminds me of Capri Blue’s Volcano candle!

Q: How do you finish your day?

A: After a long day, I love to unwind. So I shut my computer down, set aside my phone, spend time with my husband, and take my puppy for a walk. One other thing I’ve also been enjoying is also cooking. I’ve been cooking a lot of Indian food lately.

For anyone starting in the industry, my tip would be to have a good, strong work ethic. I think that’s gotten me to where I am.

Q: What’s your favorite fashion piece you own?

A: The one thing I cherish most is my mom’s vintage earrings. They’re from the ’80s, and they stay really close to my heart.

Q: What’s one question you always get asked?

A: People always ask, “Why Walk In Wonderland?” I’ve always wanted a huge, walk-in closet where I walk in and feel like I’m in Wonderland.

Q: Do you have any habits you wish you could break?

A: I hit snooze a lot. I snooze between 30 minutes sometimes to even an hour. And I’m a bit of a mess. Sometimes I wish that I had a superpower where I snap my fingers and everything is organized.

Q: If you weren’t blogging, what would you do?

A: If I wasn’t blogging, I’d probably have a clothing store.

"I Weigh the Sum of All My Motherf*cking Parts" — Jameela Jamil on Feminism, Inclusion & Impossible Body Standards

“Make space, don’t take space.”

Listening to Jameela Jamil talk about her philosophy on womanhood, success, and inclusion is like taking a breath of the freshest air you’ve ever inhaled. She’s unlike anyone else in Hollywood, sharing her fears and failures like badges of honor and taking down the patriarchy along the way. When she left the stage at our Desert Pop Up event this past weekend, we sat in awe processing everything she’d just laid out on the table. Lucky for you, we took notes—and some of our favorite takeaways from her keynote are below. Scroll through for inspiration from a woman who’s had enough of the status quo and is fighting to make the world a better place for all of us—both on Instagram and off…and go listen to her WorkParty episode for more!

“Trying is winning. I think we put too much emphasis on what we think success is. There’s so much to be had in just trying, and that’s where the real guts come from.”

“If you’re going to be an activist or feminist, you have to be willing to take an L and know that we don’t know everything. We have to be willing to shut up, listen, and learn, and not be too proud about it.”

“We’re all feminists in progress who said weird problematic shit when we were younger, and now we’re all growing up and out of it. We’re having to unlearn so much of our own internalized misogyny, and we have to not shame each other for that.”

I am done with the idea of the “icon.” I want an icon I can relate to and see myself in.

“I was told I was too old, too fat, and too ethnic for Hollywood, but I’m here today. Don’t listen to people who project their fears on you.”

“The next generation is f*cking done being excluded and looking up to a white straight thin version of what we are supposed to be. We’re done with the dinosaurs…and I’m here to kill the last of them.”

“It pays to include minorities, so do it.”

“If a man is attractive, it’s considered a bonus. For us, it’s the basic foundation of our worth. We have to be the Victoria’s Secret model, but they just have to be successful enough to fuck the Victoria’s Secret model.”

“I am done with the idea of the “icon.” I want an icon I can relate to and see myself in.”

“I weigh the sum of all my motherf*cking parts.”

“Stop being so worried about being fucking likable—it’s not your responsibility to make people happy.”

“All the things we want are readily available to us; we just don’t know we’re allowed to ask for them.”

“Build yourself up from the inside. Go to therapy! Spend all the money you’d spend on bullshit face creams on saving yourself first. You are the most important person in every way.”

“I have a strong elimination diet around anyone that brings toxicity into my circle.”

“The amount that all of us, especially women of color, have been through is ridiculous. You are walking miracles.”

“Make space, don’t take space. We’re told there’s room for one, but that’s a lie. There’s room for loads of us.”

“This is now a time of sisterhood. Seeing how high my activism has risen, seeing how I’ve been embraced for being so outspoken, so rude—-by even the media and men—-is a sign that change is here.”

Desk-Side: This Fashion Blogger Shares The Best Part of Being Her Own Boss

The opportunity to create, to write, to dream—it just never stops.

Jessi Afshin is no stranger to success. With 300k Instagram followers, Jessi spends her days working on her fashion blog, The Darling Detail, and her new clothing line, Shop Darling, which supports victims of trafficking. We partnered with Glade Essentials Room Mist to find out what inspires Jessi and makes her feel most at home. Read on to get to know Jessi!

Q: How long have you been in Austin?

A: So I’ve lived in Austin since 1999, that’s almost 20 years. I actually went to the University of Texas, that’s where I studied fashion and business. Hook ‘em!

Q: What do you love most about fashion?

A: My favorite part of fashion is just all the positive emotions it evokes, like self-confidence and encouragement. So many good feelings just through comfort.

Q: We heard you just launched a clothing line, congrats! Can you tell us about it?

A: I just launched a clothing line, and I’m so excited about it because this has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. They’re soft, cozy sweatshirts and they have joyful messages on them. Every single one of our products is actually shipped and fulfilled by survivors of trafficking in Austin. So we’re actually employing women who are recovering from trafficking.

Q: Where do you draw your inspiration from?

A: I get almost all my inspiration from dreams. I have like 10 dreams a night. I wake up and I write them down, and I instantly have so many new ideas. I also LOVE to Pinterest, and mood board, and collage.

Q: What do you love most about your office space?

A: I like to keep this space feeling so fresh and inspiring. We’ve been using Glade Essentials Room Mist Mandarin & Mimosa and it seriously smells like an Anthropologie store in here!

Q: What’s the best part about being your own boss?

A: I love my job. The opportunity to create, to write, to dream—it just never stops. One of my favorite parts about working for myself is the flexibility and the hours. It’s amazing. So much of what I do happens right at my desk. But most of all, my very favorite part about what I do is writing my faith-based account, it’s called My Darling Diary and it’s where my heart is.

"An Overnight Success is 10 Years in the Making" & Other Mic-Drop Moments You Missed From Our Desert Pop-Up

Palm Springs, you did it again.

There’s nothing like coming together with hundreds of women in the middle of the desert to mingle, share knowledge, and hear from some of the best in the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries. Saturday’s Desert Pop-Up was all that and more, with jaw-dropping keynotes from Jameela Jamil, Rocky Barnes, and Karena Dawn and Katrina Scott. They shared the priceless advice they’ve gained over the years, and we couldn’t take notes fast enough! Don’t worry if you weren’t there—we’re bringing you all the key takeaways below…and if you’re a C&C Insider, you can watch videos of every speaker & panel here!

The New Standard: Influencers Reshaping the Beauty & Fashion Industry

“I want to be on the field playing, not on the bench.” - Annie Lawless, Lawless Beauty

“Everything you post is an online resume.” - Jill Wallace, Little Black Boots

“I’m not going to do a job I’m not 100% about. I will never compromise my style.” - Brittany Xavier, global style influencer

Don’t do it for the likes or the comments. Post what you’re passionate about. - Carolina Lindo, I’m Not Sorry Darling

On starting a new venture: “There really is no true five year plan. Everything you do should be short-term planning.” — Jessica Franklin, HeyGorJess

“The only person I’m in competition with is myself. Where was I three months or six months ago, and where I am now?”
— Jill Wallace, Little Black Boots

On being an influencer in a rapidly-changing digital landscape: “It’s a bit like the wild wild west. We’re making the rules up as we go.” - Jill Wallace

“There’s never a right time to start a company, so you might as well start now. Just have faith.” - Annie Lawless

“You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going. Just be really focused and passionate about what you do and everything will fall into place.” - Jessica Franklin

“The only person I’m in competition with is myself. Where was I three months or six months ago, and where I am now?” - Jill Wallace

Fireside Chat: Rocky Barnes

“An overnight success is 10 years in the making.”

“I think it’s so important to find the right person or brand to collaborate with. Don’t be afraid to say no and find the right match. It’s like finding a boyfriend.”

“I don’t want anyone to think there’s a quick easy shortcut to success — It may look like there is, but it’s all about hard work.”

“Make time for face-to-face interactions, taking the time to have coffee, say hello—make a personal connection. You have no idea how far that will go in this industry.”

“The best advice I’ve ever received is to never take anything personally.”

“No one is bigger or better than anyone else. Everyone started in the same place.”

“Instead of focusing just on that dream job, focus on the way you want to feel. That’s where you should put your focus.”

Keynote: Katrina Scott & Karena Dawn, Founders of Tone It Up, in conversation with Jaclyn Johnson

“The secret to being business partners is to allow each other to be who you are and find your strengths.”

“There’s never enough time in the day—don’t try to do everything. If you can choose to do one big thing once a day, think of how much you can achieve in a month, or a year, or 10 years.”

“Be in tune with the community you have, even when you think you know what’s best for your business.”

“For us, because we’re so focused on relationships, hiring is really about culture. Hire smarter than you are. Hire people who know what you don’t know.”

“Life isn’t all about work. You have to set boundaries—we’ll go on vacation together and spend the whole week not talking about work. Life is meant to be enjoyed.”

“You have to OK with change. Evolution is great. You’re not the same person you were 10 years ago, and your brand should evolve as well.”

“We’re really guilty of doing every job ourselves. You shouldn’t do that—you should be creating and connecting with your community.”

“Hiring is an investment of time, but think about how it will pay off in the long run.”

“From the very beginning, you’ll never find any Tone It Up workouts about ‘problem areas.’ We’ve always been very body positive. We have before and afters, but we’ve highlighted women who’s gained weight, who’ve gotten stronger, who’ve gone from being not confident to confident.

“Live in the moment and learn. When we’re younger, we’re so concerned about what other people are thinking about you. Just live.”

We Mean Biz: The Content Creators Building Buzz & Businesses

“There’s a reason people sit around the table and talk about their invention ideas and don’t follow through on them—because doing them is no joke. If you have that idea and there is something in you pulling you to do it, figure it out because I have to say, going forward with TOPTOTE, I would have regretted not making it happen.” - Lindsay Albanese, TOPTOTE

“Whoever is paying you is always going to say there’s no money available. There is always money available. Be difficult. Ask for the big money.” - Keltie Knight, TV Host & Founder, Ladygang

Focus on your niche. Focus on what your friends ask your advice on. What are you getting questions about? What are you really good at? Focus on that. - Jaci Marie Smith, Influencer & Founder, What We Said

“If it’s not something I would wear myself, I won’t put it into production.” - Nicole Williams English, Nia Lynn Collection

“Some of the biggest opportunities I’ve gotten are because I’ve asked for it. If I’m not asking, someone else is.”
— Lindsay Albanese, Founder of TOPTOTE

“Hard workers only. If you’ve got it, you’ll make it happen.” - Lindsay Albanese

“Tap into your resources. You know more people than you realize that can help you take that next step in making something happen.” - Lindsay Albanese

“Ask for what you want, because you are worth it. It is so hard to find a passionate, smart woman to work for you—and you are that. Get that money.” - Keltie Knight

“I’m at the point now where I’d rather level up on everything I’m doing than doing something new.” - Jaci Marie Smith

“A lot of people are so nervous to ask for what they want, but some of the biggest opportunities I’ve gotten are because I’ve asked for it. If I’m not asking, someone else is.” - Lindsay Albanese

“Take ‘just’ out of your vocabulary. Not ‘just following up.’ Say, ‘Hey. I’m following up. I’m fucking awesome. Reply to me.’” - Keltie Knight

Keynote: Jameela Jamil in conversation with Jaclyn Johnson

“If you’re going to be an activist or feminist, you have to be willing to take an L and know that we don’t know everything. We have to be willing to shut up, listen, and learn, and not be too proud about it.”

“The next generation is f*cking done being excluded and looking up to a white straight thin version of what we are supposed to be. We’re done with the dinosaurs…and I’m here to kill the last of them.”

“I weigh the sum of all my motherf*cking parts.”

“Stop being so worried about being fucking likable—it’s not your responsibility to make people happy.”

“This is now a time of sisterhood. Seeing how high my activism has risen, seeing how I’ve been embraced for being so outspoken, so rude—-by even the media and men—-is a sign that change is here.”

17 Steps to Leading a Mind-Blowing Meeting

Don't succumb to bad meeting fate.

Once upon a time, I worked for a woman who was known as a star meeting facilitator. CEOs would call left and right, asking her to organize strategy sessions and management off-sites, and she would prepare for these sessions meticulously and down to the last detail. Frequently, as I helped her prep for a meeting, she would remind me in an ominous voice: “Romy, if the room is too hot or too cold, people are going to blame you for it.”

While room temperature is sometimes tough to control, her broader point stands: if you’re going to lead a successful meeting, you have to think constantly about the participants. What’s going to make them feel good about the experience? How can you make sure everyone is engaged and heard? How do you make your participants a part of the meeting process, instead of just an audience? Fortunately, there's a process for that.

Here are some ways you can steer your meetings in a positive (dare we say, exciting?) direction.

1. Have a clear objective

Make sure everyone knows what you’re there to accomplish. If you can come in with a single item you want to achieve and then achieve it, everyone will leave feeling good about the meeting.

2. Have an agenda — and make it obvious

Make sure everyone knows what you're going to cover and in what order. It helps you keep the meeting on track, and gives your attendees a sense of inclusion in the process.

3. Keep it short

Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Everyone has lots to do and a short attention span. The more you can keep the meeting brief, the more people will thank you. That means you need to keep the scope of the meeting highly focused.

4. Book a comfortable room

...with chairs at the table for everyone. Seriously. If people feel uncomfortable or are marginalized to “back row seats,” they're not going to be receptive — and what they’ll remember later won't be the great discussion, but how uncomfortable they felt.

5. Choose the right seat

If it’s a meeting that’s around a long table, as the leader, you should sit in the middle, not at the head. That way, you are closer to everyone, sending a message that says, “this is a discussion.”

6. Bring bribes — EHM, snacks

Everyone likes food. Especially not completely unhealthy food.

7. Phones down, heads up

At the start of the meeting, ask everyone if they wouldn’t mind setting aside their phones for the duration of the meeting so everyone can have a better experience.

Send a message that says, ‘this is a discussion.’

8. Make sure all key stakeholders can and will attend

Nothing's worse than assembling a group without a key decision-maker so then nothing gets decided. Confirm RSVPs for everyone, and send a meeting reminder the day before.

9. Keep the tone purposeful but light

Inject humor wherever possible. If you can find any way to make the meeting fun, people will thank you. But please: no dad jokes.

10. Keep on track

If someone tries to take the meeting in another direction (and they always do), say, “that’s a great thought. Let’s schedule a separate meeting to discuss it."

11. Make everyone heard

Pay attention to people's reactions to the discussion. Often you'll spot someone trying to speak up but missing their shot. If someone is being drowned out, call attention to them and give them the floor.

12. Elicit participation from everyone

If someone seems quiet or thoughtful, ask them directly for their input. And if someone is not paying attention, call them out on it!

13. Take group notes on a whiteboard

If you jot down people’s thoughts, it gives them weigh t— and it also helps bring participants along to a conclusion or solution with you.

14. Blatantly wrap up

Recap key findings and next steps. Reiterate how the group has successfully accomplished the task at hand. The mental “checking of the check-box” will make everyone feel good.

15. Thank everyone for their time

These days, time is the most precious commodity anyone has. Thank them for making time to join you.

16. End five minutes early

If you can wrap up the meeting five minutes before the scheduled time, people will LOVE you. These days, so many people’s schedules are so booked, they will be forever grateful if you give them five extra minutes to catch up on email or — God forbid — take a bathroom break.

17. Send a meeting recap, notes, and follow-up

THAT DAY or the next day at the very latest. Make sure it is clear who is responsible for what follow up and by when. And if you need a follow up meeting, send the invite for it immediately too. It gives people a sense that the project is progressing.

Ultimately, it’s all about anticipation. If you can think through the purpose and the flow of the meeting in advance, and map out the participants’ experience, you are sure to have meeting that is no less than mind-blowing. And if all else fails, for God’s sake, check the thermostat!

How Refusing To Compare & Despair Helped Me Build a Unique App

“We focused less on standing out, and more on what we had to offer.”

I initially didn’t love the idea: an app that livestreams meditation. My boss suggested it amidst a lunchtime brainstorm, about the intersections of the wellness and technology spaces. I questioned whether live meditation really offered something different than other meditation apps. We brushed over the idea.

It wasn’t until I coincidentally began offering an optional Friday meditation to my coworkers via conference call (most of them were remote in different parts of the US) that I began to connect the dots. The real catalyst was a feeling my coworker experienced during this weekly meditation call. As she listened in and followed my voice, she noticed that her mind was not spiraling with anxious thoughts in the same way she had experienced when listening to guided meditation alone. She explained that it felt like everyone was meditating there with her in Seattle, even though the rest of the team was actually in Brooklyn, Toronto, and Walla Walla.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it: live meditation. Hundreds of people meditating at the same time across the world. Meditating in collective energy. I was reminded of studies that showed that group meditation has had a resonant effect on surrounding areas, reducing conflict and violence. This led me to a question that many of our great thinkers have explored: is there a single unifying force that joins us all together? And if so, can we tap into it?

I went back to my boss. Luckily, exploring and investing in this idea aligned with our company mission to start creating our own digital products again.

So, we went for it.

I kicked off the process, ushering myself through the same steps I often usher clients through: research, strategy, design, build, refinement. I was confronted with a sea of well-designed meditation apps from credible meditation experts, funded by lots of capital. There was a small opening in the market: no one was offering live meditation. We also had a unique scenario rare to the “app” world, where we were our own clients. We focused less on how to stand out, and focused our effort on what would allow an authentic manifestation of this idea.

As I began digging into design, I realized that if I continued to face the challenge of designing a meditation app, it would likely look and feel similar to other apps. In order to stand out, I needed to nurture what was unique to us. How do I help people feel the presence of others? How do I create a space in which people feel a sense of community, perhaps the presence of something “bigger” than themselves, without drawing away from the meditation practice itself? We focused less on standing out, and more on what we had to offer.

I used these questions as guard-rails. Functionality, structure, and aesthetic all had to contribute to accentuating this “feeling” of calm and the collective.

We started by stripping away anything that might distract people, or feed into our familiar behaviors of consuming content. I thought about how well-established apps (Twitter, Instagram) started, and noticed that these now refined, polished products launched with a single function. A small focused product could create big impact. We removed functionality— sign-ups, likes, comments, noted meditations— and interactions — scrolling and double taps—that weren’t 100% necessary to our experience. We landed on one single UI element: a button that allows you to Tap In and listen to a live meditation.

Our meditations wouldn’t be stored. We committed whole-heartedly to the desire to bring people together at the same time. Storing meditations would mean there would be less people sitting together daily.

We used a working prototype internally for 8 weeks prior to our beta week. During that time, we learned what being live really meant. For example, while in our internal prototype phase, I led one of our first meditations using the app from my home in Brooklyn. A man, outside my window very loudly yelled “F*** you!” It was a quintessential New York moment, but not one that was conducive to meditation. Being live meant things could go wrong: teachers could cough, a fire truck could go by, a man outside the window could yell profanities. It introduced a rawness that felt uncomfortable in a digital world that obsesses over curated experiences. We’d be removing the mask of curation, revealing our imperfections. Meditation teaches us to notice all of the facets of being human, including the environments we’re in. The more we can turn into ourselves and our breath, the more we can turn down the chaos around us. With some loose guidelines in place to ensure a relaxing experience, we chose to embrace it.

The remainder was primarily aesthetic, and relied on details and metaphors. We landed on the idea of each user being represented by a light orb, rather than photos or videos. As users “Tap In,” we could create a celestial ecosystem. With a halo identifying your own orb, you flock together and shift shapes with the other meditators. We aim to accentuate the feeling of togetherness— or at least ignite the imagination. Our backgrounds are blobs of colors, with ribbon-like shapes intersecting, visualizing what energy looks like to me. They continuously undulate and shift back and forth, up and down. We created a space that users can walk into, in hopes of immediately promoting calm.

As I reflect back on the creation experience, I noticed it’s often easier to look at other products and see value in their solution, rather than mold your own unique but raw ideas. Looking out rather than in often moves us into a space of comparison instead of creation. What is it that you are really trying to solve? And how can you share your unique take on that idea. In the creation of Tap In, solving the design for the app meant borrowing deeply from meditation traditions: silencing the noise in order to stay clear and true to the pure “essence,” the seed, the soul of the idea.

Originally from Montréal, Margaux Le Pierrès works as the design director at Fictive Kin, a digital product studio, where she had lead branding & digital product design for fabulous companies like National Geographic & Kickstarter. Margaux is also a certified Reiki Master, and Akashic record practitioner, with experience working with clients one-on-one to help facilitate opportunities for people to connect to themselves more deeply, and live a more authentic life. Along with Fictive Kin, Margaux recently launched Tap In, the first live, collective meditation app.
