Make the Most of Attendee Happy Hour

If you’ve never been to a C&C attendee Happy Hour the night before the conference, you are in for a treat.

Happy Hour is taking place at Rolling Greens 7505 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90036 from 6 - 7:30 PM. Please bring your badge for entry or your attendee confirmation.

Not only do you get to mix, mingle, and network with fellow C&C attendees (bring those biz cards) you’ll also get your first big (head) shot. LinkedIn is providing headshot and Linkedin page optimization services.

That’s right.

You’ll look totally pro, before you hit the C&C circuit the next day.

Happy Hour is a great way to meet fellow attendees and begin building some very important relationships. Not sure on how to get the conversation started at the party? Here are a few tips.

1. Be open

Conferences can feel intimidating. You don't know who is going to be there, what to expect, or what you want out of it. Be open to everything! The Create + Cultivate community is one of kindness, support, and enthusiasm. You'll quickly find out that everyone is very open about where they are and what they're looking for (in life and work), and will be totally down to buddy up for the day! We have seen so many friendships blossom from the conference, so be open to whatever it may bring.

2. Go big or go home

Be bold and get outside your comfort zone—approach that person you have been dying to meet and ask them your burning questions! We want you to get the most from your C+C experience but that starts with you! Our team will be all over to answer any questions and if you see us, PLEASE introduce yourself! We love meeting our attendees and hearing all of your amazing stories!

3. Ask the good stuff

We've all been asked the same, "Where do you work?" "What do you do?" "Where do you live?" Boring questions and chances are, we're tired of answering them. Try asking your new friends something fresh and exciting. Switching up the conversation from the traditional work-related topics can really break the ice and give you ladies something real to connect with. Here are some starters:

Have you ever traveled or studied abroad?

Best new movie you've recently seen in theaters?

New artist, you're listening to?

Next vacation you're dying to take?

Podcasts you're listening to?

Books you're reading?

You're going to have a blast and we can't wait to meet you at Happy Hour. Check out our breakdown of everything else happening at the conference this weekend, it's going to be a full day of inspiration!

Address: Rolling Greens 7505 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90036

Limited parking will be available onsite. We recommend taking an Uber or Lyft.

Hold It Together During the Most Important Meeting of Your Career

Breathe in. Breathe out.

You’ve got this. In a matter of mere minutes you will be standing on top of a career mountain. A milestone of epic proportions. Because you’re about to enter. DUN DUN DUN.

The most important meeting of your career. Breathe.

Whether it’s an interview with your dream employer or a pitch meeting with a bucket list client, there are a couple of key steps to ensure that it’s in the bag. And, no, not the paper bag panic attack. Like, in the bag, you’ve got this, high-five yourself in the mirror because you’re about to do the damn thing.

Thanks to our friends at TRESemmé we’re sharing how.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Practice until you’re blue in the face. Practice until it’s in your DNA. And then forget the script. It’s a little trick that seems counterintuitive, but allows you to speak from the heart and the head.
You need to know your facts. Your KPIs (key performance indicators) and ROIs (return on investments) but you also have to know YOU (no acronym. Just you). When you combine your smarts with your soul, there’s no stopping you. But, you do need to put in the work. Speaking of--

KEEP IT MEMORABLE

If you’re meeting with someone for the first time, or you really want to impress said person, nerves have a tendency to wreck the best laid plans. Even the most seasoned amongst us get the jitters when they’re faced with career stressors. Even Meryl Streep was once nervous, asking Jane Fonda for tips on how to keep it together.

Keep it memorable by being yourself-- not a rehearsed version of you, as discussed above. To make an impression, you need to fake confidence. Not only will your enthusiasm for the subject matter leave a lasting impression, confidence begets confidence. Meaning, if you believe in yourself and what you’re saying, chances are higher the other person will as well.

KEEP IT FROM BEING A HAIR-RAISING EXPERIENCE.

From all parties. Look, you don’t want to fidget with your clothes or your hair during a presentation or interview. You want to appear cool, calm, collected, and tugging on your clothes, or nervously touching your hair, belies the confidence you’re trying so hard to fake. One way to ensure you don’t fall down a hair-twisting nervous tick is to put it back and use a little of the new TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray, which will keep it in place, with no stiffness or crunch.

No matter how you style your hair, remember: you got this. You can hold it together. And TRESemmé can give you a little help on the side. Try this Sleek low bun from Justine Marjan, TRESemmé Global Stylist.

Create a center part then spray a brush with the new TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray in Level 3: Boost, then brush through the hair and gather the hair into a sleek low pony, spraying the brush with more hairspray if necessary. To keep the pony as sleek as possible, tilt your head back as you secure the elastic. Run the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum through the length of the pony and to smooth down any flyaways to finish.

Have other tips and tricks for first meetings? We’d love to hear! Share in the comments below.

How the C&C Team Keeps Healthy During Conference Week

Oh my gosh, it’s almost here.

Olly Olly oxen free!!

That’s what the C&C team will be yelling next Saturday night when we’re filled with joy and happiness and likely, a couple of delirious tears over the success of our pending Create & Cultivate LA conference.

‘Cause look we’ve been in hiding. Our heads down, doing the damn thing, working on Create & Cultivate tirelessly over the last couple months. Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE the work we do, but that doesn’t mean we don’t burn midnight oil or work more hours than the average 9-5er.

It’s hard putting on a conference the scale of C&C. And neglecting our health and wellness is not an option. So we make sure to 1. Drink tons of water and 2. Take our vitamins. These are what vitamins we’re popping!

They help us feel like there are a few more vitaminutes in the day.

Jaclyn Johnson, CEO + Founder

Goodbye Stress. WIth GABA, L-Theanine and Lemon Balm, Goodbye Stress help our CEO keep calm and stay alert. “There are so many plates spinning in the air come conference time,” she shares, “so keeping calm, but focused, is vital to the success of the conference.”

GABA is a fast-acting (30-60 minute) active that supports a relaxed state of mind to help combat the acute effects of stress. Even though there is nothing cute about stress face.

Arianna Schioldager, Editor in Chief

Purely Probiotic. Needing to stay on top of it all tends to take its toll on our EIC during conference time. Long hours and a go-go-go-get ‘em environment is hard on her body. “Making sure my digestive tract is in good working order is key to making sure I stay on top of my game,” she says. ‘Otherwise my immune system goes haywire.”

Since 70% of your body’s immune system lives in your digestive tract, it’s super important for your overall health and well-being.

Adriana Contreras, Senior Event Producer

Undeniable Beauty. C&C is close to a 100-hour work week, especially for the production team. There’s no time to stop and think, let alone make sure you hair and nails look good.

Heather Records, Senior Marketing Manager

Daily Energy. Heather heads up C&C’s social channels, which means she needs all the energy in the world to keep up with our enthusiastic followers and attendees. The B12 in Daily Energy keeps her from burning out, even when she’s burning the candle at both ends. “Week of conference is pure crazy,” Heather says, “but it’s the exact kind of crazy that I like. I just need to power up and power on.”

Chloe White, Graphic Designer

Hello Sunshine Vitamin D3. Our redhead, fair-skinned graphic designer tends to get burned outdoors. But she also spends so much time at her comp., that it’s important for her to give her body a daily dose of of Vitamin D3. It also helps support overall wellness. “Even if I can’t make it outside during conference week, I still like to feel like there some sunshine in my life,” laughs Chloe. Plus, it helps support a healthy immune system, which I’m all about conference week. There’s no time to get sick.”

ALL OF US.

Restful Sleep. On Sunday post-conference, once all I’s have been dotted and T’s crossed, you can bet we’ll all be popping Restful Sleep with a little bit of melatonin to slow our brains down and make sure we get a good night’s rest Sunday. Because there’s no rest for the worker bees.

If you're attending Create & Cultivate LA be sure to check the Olly pop up to learn more about there delicious and super beneficial vitamins and how they can help you!

The One Product Every Working Woman Needs

Hello future.

You’ve stayed up late working, cooking, organizing, folding all that laundry on your bed, and everything else. It’s tough being the boss breadwinner. And next? You have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get ready for the next 9-10 hours at the office. Hair is the last thing on your priority list, right?

Same. We’ve all been there, but we’re introducing you to the number one machine that will solve all your hair probs.

Yes, it’s a hair dryer. But not just any hair dryer. This hair dryer has already won more awards than all of us on the C&C team combined.

Celebrity hairstylist and C&C fave, Jen Atkin, had a huge part in the creation of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer™ which is now creating a hair dryer revolution. This past year, at New York Fashion Week F/W17 and S/S18, the machine powered the hair at more than a dozen shows including: Alexander Wang, Phillip Plein, Brandon Maxwell, Brock Collection, Narcisco Rodriguez.

Save Time

Not only does it make you look super techie and chic with its slim frame and lightweight body. It’s also very effective in getting the job done. This hair dryer from the heavens is cutting drying time in half for most women with a motor that spins up to six times faster than a Formula One race car

Tom Crawford, Dyson Global Category Director, says, "Fast drying isn’t just about high‑speed air. You also need the right balance of pressure and turbulence. You need to control the air, and make it stable."

Make Less Noise

It’s stable alright. It’s also borderline silent. We know, a quiet hair dryer almost sounds like a dream come true.

Three words. Vibration reduction mount. This fancy mount helps prevent the motor from vibrating against the inside of the handle, which in turn, reduces the amount of noise coming from the hair dryer.

Get More Shine

As if you needed another reason to fall in love, the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer was engineered to protect against extreme heat damage to bring out the natural shine of your hair. It’s intelligent heat control measures the exiting air temperature measured 20 times per second. When our hair is exposed to excessive heat, this reduces reflective light and decreases our hairs’ natural shine.

Annmarie Nicholson, a Dyson Engineer says, "You need a certain amount of heat to style hair, but extreme heat can cause damage. By keeping the temperature under control, our dryer can help protect your hair."

Silent drying, faster drying and more heat protection. Welcome to the future ladies. If you’re joining us at Create & Cultivate LA this year, don’t miss the chance to try out this beautiful machine at the Dyson pop-up! Their team will be offering complimentary dry blowouts.

Have you tried the Dyson hair dryer already? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Nina Dobrev’s workout playlist and best fitness advice

Get #LikeNina

Nina Dobrev is an actress and fitness fanatic. You may recognize her from her roles in Return of Xander Cage and Flatliners. When she’s not busy filming on set, Nina is in the gym with her girls.

Get the scoop on her new Les Mills GRIT workout, what’s on her gym playlist and the one fitness routine every on-the go woman needs in her life below!

Tell us about your girls you workout with, what do you love about group workouts?
I am lucky enough to have an amazing group of girlfriends who all love working out as much as I do. For me, it makes the experience much more fun. Especially when we do our weekly dance classes. It doesn’t feel like a workout, we have a great time and we sweat which a bonus! I’ll take a group workout with my ladies over a solo workout any day.

What are your essentials to a healthy lifestyle as an on-the-go girl always working on the next big thing?

Working out for at least 30 minutes each day is my Zen time that keeps me going. I make sure to put my phone down and completely unplug so I can focus on doing something good for my body.

Can you chat us through how working out with Les Mills has changed how you feel about your body?

Les Mills GRIT has transformed my body completely. To put it simply, these workouts kick my ass! Les Mills GRIT workouts work every single muscle in the body and have allowed me to build strength that I never had before. Once I started seeing results, I couldn’t stop.

How do you juggle your fitness and wellness routine while filming on set?

I am fortunate enough to have Lissa (Lissa Bankston, Reebok X Les Mills International  trainer) with me, we make time every single day. 30 minutes, everyone can do it. Even after the hardest, longest days, I have learned to hold myself accountable for making this time no matter what.  However, what’s amazing about Les Mills is that they offer workouts you can truly do anywhere, anytime – with or without a trainer, or even a gym.  Les Mills On Demand workout programs let you workout from online anywhere.  They have 15 minute to 55 minute classes available for people of all fitness levels so it really gives you no excuse to not find the time.

How does maintaining a wellness routine affect your positivity and perspective?

Maintaining a consistent wellness routine is so important to me. I love working out. It’s in my body, it’s in my soul, and it’s part of who I am. Sleep, and the proper fuel are also vital to maintaining wellness as well. I won’t settle for less than 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night, and I start each day with a special shake packed with protein and vitamins to help kick start my day.

IYO, what’s the one fitness activity every working women should try to do at least once a week?

If I had to recommend one fitness activity that every woman could fit into their schedule just once a week, I would have to say the #LikeNina Les Mills GRIT workout that I developed with Reebok and Les Mills. It’s quick, only 30 minutes, but it is SO hard. The best results come from the hardest work, and I am a firm believer that everyone can make time for a 30 minute workout each day.

Go-to playlist you listen to when you’re working out:

Woman - Kesha
She Wants Me Dead - CAZZETTE
Lose Control - Hedley
No Problem - Chance the Rapper
Feel It Still - Portugal. The Man.
Most Girls - Hailee Steinfeld
Sorry Not Sorry - Demi Lovato
All Night - Steve Aoki, Lauren Jauregui

Coming to C&C LA? Nina will be joining us on our Keeping It One Million panel at this year’s conference, don’t miss it!

What’s on your workout playlist? Let us know in the comments below!

4 Quick Ways to Upgrade Your Work Look

Brrr-ing. That’s our mix of brr and boring. How we feel about our winter wardrobe.

Brrr-ing. That’s our mix of brr and boring, and TBH it’s how we’re feeling about our winter wardrobe right about. Layers are chic and all, but we’re ready to bring our outfit vibes out of hibernation. Because look, winter will be over before you know it and we need a few looks to match our spring feeeel-ings. Everything's coming up!

Yes. We’ve collectively made it through the long chilly haul. But if you’re like us, and wondering how to upgrade your winter/spring transition, without making a major dent in your paycheck, we’ve got tons of great ideas.

EAR BLING.

Throwing on a pair of earrings to match your top can make a huge difference for your look. Bright earrings are also a great distraction to a not-so-glamorous hair day. What goes better with an Excel spreadsheet than a bold earring? Nothing.

JUST SAY NO TO COMPUTER BAGS.

Leave the plain colors for your tech. Carrying a bold bag that demands attention is a surefire way to upgrade a casually chic office look. Besides, you don’t need to lug your laptop to lunch. Leave it on your desk and bring one of the above instead.

GET IN CHARACTER.

It’s still a little frosty outside, so layering your outfit with mix matching textures adds some character to your look. Some of our office favorites are denim paired with linen or cotton.

BOLD NATION.

Color blocking or just throwing on some bold patterns is one of the simplest ways to spice up outfit for the day. Just grab a simple colored top and pair it with a bold printed bottom and you got it girl!

All products featured can be found on YOOX

What are your favorites ways to rock your look at work? Share below!

Lettuce Take Back Our Lunch Hour

Give it up, switch it up + spice it up.

Lunch. Defined as a meal eaten in the middle of the day, typically lighter, or less formal than an evening meal. If you’re #nevernotworking workflow is anything like ours, lunch is more of a luxury most weekdays.

When we finally get into a flow of productivity we really don’t want to sacrifice it for anything. We envy those amazing women who use their lunch hour to network, savor their meal and take a brain-break to come back fully recharged. So we’re making an effort, call it more of a commitment, to take back our lunch hour.

The salad savvy ladies at organicgirl, our favorite organic greens company, gave us their pointers on taking back the lunch hour. With these three steps to switch up your lunch routine, you’ll be coasting through the 3pm slump unphased.

First we gotta give up some bad habits.

Give it Up

Cutting back on the carbs during lunch can help keep our energy higher throughout the day. Jennifer Whittle, one of our LA panelists gives up  bread, pasta and rice – those types of carbs at lunch. “I save my cracker/bread carb for snack before dinner when I crave it or on weekends when anything goes.”

Nicole Malcolm-Manyara, conductor of communications is “making an effort to stop delaying lunch until 4pm, scheduling meetings during my lunch hour and eating at my desk. Instead, I block time on my calendar for lunch, disengage from work email, and try to spend at least 15 minutes of that time walking outside or on a treadmill. When I take regularly scheduled breaks, it makes me more productive and makes me feel happier in general. Studies have proven that taking breaks while working allows our brains to process information and connect ideas better, and therefore enables us to be more creative, insightful and focused. Who wouldn’t want that?!”

Caitrin Hall, premium salad and fresh dressing champion echos Nicole’s don’t work through lunch mantra: “I try not to look at work email. This let’s me fully enjoy my nourishing food and take a little time to reset.”

Switch it Up

Heidi Otto, the brains behind organicgirl’s new bevvy’s considers the season heavily: “I use sautéed greens because I have started learning nutrition based on Ayurvedic food philosophy.  In the winter it’s important to eat warming foods that heat your soul and your energy.  It’s also important to eat foods that are already warm to make it easier for your body to digest them.  Salad in its normal form requires a lot of energy to heat it to your body temperature and to digest it.  Sautéed you get a new texture, can eat WAY more greens and you’re helping your overall wellness to boot!”

Caitrin gets out of dodge: “Sometimes when I need to clear my head or make a decision about something at work, I drive to our charming downtown and take a walk around in the sunshine. Stretching my legs, stepping back from work, and feeling the sun on my face is always rejuvenating and boosts my focus when I get back to my desk.”

“Don’t feel guilty about taking a break; view this as a time for self-care to energize yourself for a productive second half of the work day.”

Tweet This.

Julia Neff, social community maestro agrees: “Don’t feel guilty about taking a break; view this as a time for self-care to energize yourself for a productive second half of the work day. One easy small change is to eat at a different location than my desk. On days where I’m looking for an extra boost, I turn to essential oils. Scents like lemon, ginger and peppermint are great for increasing focus.”

Spice it Up

Nicole taps into texture to change up her lunch: “I’m currently obsessed with Saffron Road’s crunchy spiced chickpeas in just about every flavor. Even though I eat meat, I still try to get most of my protein from plants. And since chickpeas have a high protein content and are super versatile, they’re high on my list of plant-based protein-rich foods. Also, sometimes I like to cook my salad greens very lightly, or I pile on a bunch of hot cooked salad toppings to lightly wilt my greens.”

Heidi layers flavors: “Adding Eden Foods Plum vinegar is a super savory, great way to add more flavor into your salad.”

Caitrin plays by numbers: “A good salad in my book always has at least 5 ingredients. Five different ingredients bring a delightful blend, yummy textures and flavors no matter what the combo! Her formula is simple:
Greens base
Crunch (nuts, seeds)
Sweet (dried fruit, cut up fresh fruit) OR Vegetables (avo, beets, etc.)
Protein (cheese, meat, egg)
Dressing!

Julia seeks delicious simplicity: “Our organicgirl dressings are perfect for spicing up your salads. There’s a flavor for every day of the work week +1!”

Pro tip: Have your co-workers join in on the fun! At organicgirl everyone brings different toppings and they create a collaborative salad bar.

Remember The Poet Behind Beyoncé's 'Lemonade' Interludes?

Here's what she's up to now.

“I tried to make a home out of you/But doors lead to trapped doors.”

So goes the beginning of the first interlude for "LEMONADE," Beyoncé's new "visual album" released on April 23rd last year on HBO. While many critics have noted the deeply personal aspect of the hour long special, a rare glimpse into the artist's innermost feelings and thoughts, especially in relation to hubby Jay-Z, some of the most personal language is not hers. It's Warsan Shire's, a Somali-British poet who takes second billing in "LEMONADE's" production credits for 'Film Adaption and Poetry." That's right, her name appears before the directors. Shire's words reframe the entire album, making the tribulations that Queen B calls out the struggles of all women.

How the relationship between the poet and Beyoncé came to be is not known, but "Lemonade" would not be the same without the poet's work.

Here are 7 things to know about the young poet.

1. In 2014 she was named Young Poet Laureate for London. Of the honor Shire has said, “Being Young Poet Laureate for London has been an incredible experience. It has been challenging, humbling and rewarding. I’ve had really beautiful moments connecting with Londoners over the transformative power of poetry. It has been truly inspiring and I’m excited about the way it has informed and accelerated my work as a poet.”

2. She's been working on a full collection of poetry since 2012. It is set to be published this year. In 2011, Shire published “Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth,” a collection of poems. She has published one other pamphlet, "Her Blue Body."

3. She was born in Kenya in 1988 to Somali parents and immigrated to the UK at the age of one. She writes primarily of her experience as an immigrant, but is also deeply focussed on love, the human experience, and telling the stories she sees unfold before her. "Character-driven poetry is important to me," she said.

4. In "LEMONADE" Beyoncé recites adaptations of her poems including: "For Women Who Are Difficult To Love," "The unbearable weight of staying,“How To Wear Your Mother’s Lipstick,”“Dear Moon,” “Grief Has Its Blue Hands In Her Hair,” and “Nail Technician As Palm Reader.”

5. Where does she get her inspiration? Shire usually writes at night, with music and film are crucial to the process. “My writing is always inspired by film,” she told africainwords.com. “If I don’t watch a film, I won’t write. I watch about 10 films a week.”

6. Her name almost seems like foreshadowing for her career. Warsan means ‘good news’ and Shire means ‘to gather in one place.’ Her parents named her after her grandmother of her father's side. Of her name she has said, "It is not easy to pronounce, it takes effort to say correctly and I am absolutely in love with the sound of it and its meaning.”

7. Writer's tip: She uses a Dictophone when recording the experience of her relatives, so that she has authentic and true accounts before turning their stories in poetry.

The Best Kept Secrets For Finding Career Success

Sharing is caring.

We spend half the waking hours in our working adult lives on the clock. You can spend those hours punching in and out, passing the time, and getting by, or you can spend those hours -- you guessed it -- creating and cultivating the career of your dreams.

And because there are so many different definitions of success, we took a look at a recent LinkedIn study and are sharing our best advice for finding career success, happiness, and stability -- after all, we’re all #InItTogether.

FIND YOUR PASSION

LinkedIn found that more than one-third of professionals (36%) are finding success by pursuing a passion project or side-hustle. We have some theories as to why. When you’re passionate about the work that you do, it becomes more than a job. It becomes a reason to thrive. This stat should EMPOWER you to make bold choices about your career. Yes, being an entrepreneur is difficult, but how would you like to join the ranks of workers who are finding joy and success through their work? According to the survey, it’s no longer about landing the corner office. Today, it’s about being your own boss -- 34% of professionals surveyed would take a 10% pay cut if it meant having the ability to design their own schedule.

Which brings us to our next secret…

ABUNDANCE IS ABOUT MORE THAN $$

We know that money in the bank is an important piece of the pie. But there’s more to it. According to LinkedIn, 87% of professionals say that success isn’t only about what they accomplish in their life, it’s about what they inspire others to do. Which means, if you want to find true happiness and success, you need to pay it forward and back. Whether that’s through mentorship programs or through local community outreach, it’s important for you to take the time to figure out how you can inspire others. It’s one reason why mentorship is a key element of Create & Cultivate culture. We cannot find success if we turn our backs, or a blind eye, on others.

Speaking of which, it matters how you treat people and what you can bring to the table.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT YOUR CREDENTIALS.

You can line item your skills, but you’ve got to be able to back it up -- in more ways than one. C&C CEO + founder Jaclyn Johnson loves to say that experience is king. And according to key findings from LinkedIn, she’s right. An overwhelming majority of professionals (89%) feel that skills are even more important than job titles -- with “learning a new skill” ranking as the #1 career goal in 2018. Don’t be afraid to take a new class or learn a new skill like coding with resources like LinkedIn Learning. You could even swap skill training with someone in your LinkedIn network -- you teach them a specialized skill you have in exchange for their expertise. It’s an enterprising solution that also goes back to point two -- helping someone else out inspires the greater good.

For more information from the LinkedIn success findings, check out the infographic below, and find more information here. And you can join in on the conversation with #InItTogether.

What are your secrets to success? Share in the comments below!

Are you joining us at our Create & Cultivate Los Angeles Conference? If so, don’t forget to join LinkedIn for the Create & Cultivate Attendee Happy Hour on Friday, February 23 from 6:00-7:30 PM at Rolling Greens. We’ll see you there!

5 Ways to Save Time During the Work Week

Time is money, honey

You’re busy. We’re busy. Let’s cut to the chase, instead of making you chase your tail.

We’re dropping five ways to save time during the week.

Forget washing your hair

You don’t have to wash your time worries away. Dry shampoo them. Using Living Proof’s dry shampoo can save you time if you’re in rush and need to skip a wash. Keep your blowout bouncy and your roots fresh for days. That way you can worry about more important things, like making deals. In heels if you so please.

Write your to-do list before bed

Are you one of those people who has to wake up on a round number? For instance, if it’s 7:21, you’ll sleep until 7:25. Those increments of five seem to make all the difference in the am, especially when it leaves you scrambling for time. What you should never scramble for is your sanity.

Write your morning to-dos out before your snooze, that way if you have a conference call in the morning, or you have in an in-office meeting or an email that needs responding, you’re not freaked out and flustered. With a clear-cut list you will get a more peaceful night’s sleep.

No need to wake up and stress about what to do for the day, you already wrote it out. Just keep it moving.

Choose tomorrow's outfit, tonight

Your mom made you do it as a kid, there’s no reason to stop doing it as an adult. Outfit prep is like meal prep-- it saves you. Waking up and trying to decide what to wear wastes so much time in the mornings. Spend a few extra minutes before bed to choose your outfit for the next day.

Be a morning minimalist

We try to do too much in the morning. Simplify your routine by cutting one item off your to-do docket. If you think you can workout, shower, use your Headspace app, read through the morning news, make sure you don’t need to put out any email fires, home press your coffee, eat a healthy breakfast, and make it out the door with your hair and teeth brushed, forget it. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself in the AM. Go ahead and cross an item off, that way you don’t feel like you’re starting the day off on a failed foot.

Lay off the snooze

It feels so harmless in the moment but not hitting that dreadful snooze button could save you so much time and stress throughout the week. And the more stress we are, the less we accomplish. Stress KILLS time.

Move your phone or alarm a distance away from your bed so that you have to physically get up to turn it off.

Have any more tips for saving time throughout the week? Let us know in the comments!

Meet Three Enterprising Women Who Make Their Own Hours

And have the career of their dreams!

Three women from three different cities with different backgrounds and dreams have all discovered a career they can control—where they’re in charge and defying the rules of today’s workplace.

How? Cabi. These three cabi Stylists turn homes into “alternative stores,” changing the way women shop for fashion—and the way they work.  But beyond providing a solution to the frustration of modern day shopping, and earning a meaningful income while doing so, cabi Stylists are all about lifting women up, inspiring them to look and feel great, and becoming their best selves.

We’re dishing more.

Hannah Tomlin from Franklin Tennessee joined cabi as a Stylist in 2015. “I’d always dreamed of having a career in fashion,” Tomlin says, but admits, “Internally, I battled how to be part of this industry without getting engrossed in a culture that makes women feel like they aren’t enough.” That is, until she found cabi.

Katrin Brown, from Long Beach, CA has been a cabi Stylist for four years. Brown says, “As a young girl, I watched my mom build a sustainable business from home.” It was through that lens, as well as her mom’s mentorship and leadership, that Brown realized why building a cabi business was such a smart move for her future plans. She began her cabi career in 2014 and hasn’t looked back. She also has a full-time corporate career. Talk about hustle.

Archina Kumar, known to her friends and family as Cheena, also became a cabi Stylist in 2014. It was a decision the Northern Californian came to after pursuing multiple jobs and career paths that left her feeling unfulfilled. “I wasn’t passionate about my work, nor did I have the flexibility I needed.” For Cheena, cabi was a perfect solution. Given the flexibility to make her own hours, while also maintaining the ability to connect with people and transform women’s lives, Cheena found her passion.

Created as a way for women to live the life they’ve always wanted, cabi has changed the way women shop and work during the last 16 years. As more and more women grow frustrated and overwhelmed with the traditional shopping experience, cabi offers a solution that, amongst a digitally connected age, is grounded in human connection and relationship through independent Stylists who present the seasonal collections at home shows for groups of friends.

As a company dedicated to helping women create & cultivate the career of their dreams, we wanted to hear more from the women creating their dream careers with cabi.

More below.

Why was it important for you to take your career into your own hands?

Hannah Tomlin: After working 7+ years as a dental assistant (and countless other jobs), I realized the best I could hope for the future of my career was a small raise, if or when my boss would allow it. I also quickly realized I had a limit on my personal growth potential and I struggled to stay motivated. I felt like I was living to work without time for friendships, relationships, and the things that meant the most to me. When considering cabi, I thought, “Wow. This might be a really good opportunity for me to support myself.” I took the leap, and within a year and a half, I was able to quit my other jobs and just do cabi.

Katrin Brown: I remember I’d tell my friends my mom didn’t work because, in my eyes, she was always with me and my two siblings…whether she was cheering us on at our sporting events, helping out in our classrooms, chauffeuring us around from one activity to another, or getting dinner ready.

I came to learn that cabi provided her an opportunity to be a professional businesswoman doing something she loved with the flexibility to be a full-time mom. As I started my professional career, it was important for me to be part of a company that was more than just clocking in and out. I wanted to find a career that excited me, challenged me, and allowed me to do meaningful work. Most importantly, I wanted to maintain a work-life balance that allowed me to be fully present in my family, just like my mom. Cabi has given me the opportunity to do exactly this—and it’s fun!

Cheena Kumar: Before cabi, I held many different jobs, from a speech therapist on a Native American reservation to admin support and even a Zumba instructor. I was left in a challenging place where I needed a job and needed to connect with people since I was miles away from home. I also knew I needed the freedom and flexibility to pursue my passions that fulfill me, which is music ministry at my church. Cabi has given me all of this and provided the flexibility for me to do both.

Above: Katrin and her fave-- the Amour Dress.

In what ways does cabi allow you to redefine the rules of the workplace?

CK: As my own boss, I’m able to decide my hours, as well as the amount of time and effort I put into my business. More importantly, my work is meaningful and fulfilling—serving women and helping them feel confident in their own skin, letting their true beauty shine. For me, it’s not all about the clothing, it’s about the connection with each of my clients.  We really get to personally know our clients, and what works and doesn’t work for their lifestyles and bodies.   It’s not a relationship purely based on digital connection, it’s a personal relationship where I can become their go-to-fashion resource.

As a cabi Stylist, I have the privilege of working alongside incredible women who encourage, motivate, and inspire me. We’re always helping each other grow personally and sharing ways to grow our business. I’m so proud to be part of a company that’s transforming women’s lives through relationships.

KB: I’ve been able to completely redefine the traditional workplace through my cabi business because I get to manage it from home (sometimes in my pj’s!), call my own shots, set my own hours, and be my own boss! I have the freedom and flexibility to take my business with me wherever I go. That’s not the structure of a typical corporate job.  When I’m not managing my business from home, I’m enjoying ladies’ night out with incredible women of all backgrounds and giving them an opportunity to build their wardrobe without having to go to the mall or shop online.

Above: Hannah and her fave-- the High Slim Jean in white.

HT: Cabi allows me to be my own boss, make my own schedule, and earn a substantial income with no ceiling, all while uplifting and serving women. I don’t know of another career or job that allows even two of those things at once! Starting a cabi business comes with all the rewards of being an entrepreneur without the risks and cost of starting a traditional retail business. We are making women look and feel good every day, helping them discover their personal style and building their confidence, which translates into every part of their daily life. You can see that change on the inside for women.

What’s been the most exciting part of working for yourself?

KB: The most exciting part of working for myself is knowing I’m investing in myself and there’s no cap on my earning potential. I work to live and don’t live to work. I feel fortunate to build this business over time alongside my full-time career and know effort over time will set me up for success as my family grows.

I WORK TO LIVE AND DON’T LIVE TO WORK.

Tweet this.

CK: I love that I’m my own boss! I have the freedom to be true to who I am. I enjoy the flexibility of being in control of my work hours, time, and effort I put into the business, giving me time for other passions of mine. There is no one else putting pressure on me and that’s a beautiful thing.

HT: My cabi business has been so rewarding and amazing—better than I could have dreamed! I never thought I would be my own boss and now I know there is so much freedom in that. I’m able to make time for what is most important to me. I feel more confident and content saying “no” to things that are unnecessary so I can focus on the things that matter. It’s such a blessing to have the ability to be my own boss! I can work as much or as little as I want in a way that allows me to balance all of the other responsibilities in my life.

What makes the cabi entrepreneurial opportunity unique and different from other businesses?

CK: Together, we’re changing the way women shop and work. The cabi opportunity lets us turn homes into what we call “alternative stores” without the overhead of a storefront. And, there isn’t the risk of a traditional entrepreneurial business—cabi has my back every step of the way and I’m surrounded by a community of like-minded women who support me at every turn. I’ve always felt that cabi is so much more than just a clothing brand. It’s a community of women that empowers other women to look and feel confident inside and out. I haven’t found this anywhere else.

HT: The most unique thing about cabi is the way cabi Stylists are all independent, yet we are in this together. We often say “You’re in business for yourself, but not by yourself,” and that’s because I’m surrounded by nearly 3,500 cabi Stylists who are here to support me and a Home Office that gives me the tools and training to be successful in my own business. We each run our businesses in a way that fits our personal lifestyles and work toward our own personal goals, yet there is not an ounce of competition between Stylists. I can’t imagine attempting this business without the love and support of my cabi community. It makes my life and my business so much richer and helps me to be a better Stylist.

Above: Cheena and her fave-- the Franklin Blouse.

How has your cabi business brought you financial security?

CK: As a single woman, it’s great to know I’m substantially contributing to my savings and building my future. When the time comes to get married, I know I can contribute financially and that’s such an empowering feeling. I see unlimited financial growth opportunities in my cabi business and I feel great assurance that I’m in control of my financial plan. As I continue to build my team and expand my business, my income can become sufficient for my needs for many years to come. But beyond just financial security, I get to do this business in a supportive and collaborative community of strong entrepreneurial women.

KB: I run my cabi business alongside my corporate career, which has brought me and my husband financial security in so many ways. Through my added cabi income, I was able to offset some of our wedding costs this past fall, I’m contributing to the down payment on our soon-to-be first home, and it helps fund the vacations we value so much!

How do you time manage when you don’t have a “boss” or “office?”

HT: It definitely takes discipline and organization. This is still a learning curve for me, but I’m always getting better and sharing ideas and tips with fellow cabi Stylists! In fact, we have regular calls with our teams so no one is ever left on their own; it’s our time to collaborate, get new ideas, and support one another. I try to keep a steady sleep schedule and routine to create the feel of getting up and going to the “office” and to maintain productivity.

KB: Cabi has given me the tools and training I need to be my own boss lady! I’m on top of my calendar to stay organized and manage my time. Setting “business hours” is key to making time for my husband and hobbies. My planner helps me prioritize my to-do list, achieve my goals, and stay focused on what’s most important.

And of course. We need to know. What’s your favorite fashion piece for this spring season and why?

KB: I’m loving the Heavy Petal trend and I adore florals in every variety—especially mixing florals and stripes. My favorite fashion piece is one-and-done dressing seen with the Amour Dress and the Simple Playsuit. I often tell my clients you can’t go wrong with dresses and playsuits all day, every day!

CK: I love the Franklin Blouse. The pop of red and the intricate detailing of the horizontal and vertical red, white, and blue pinstripes makes this such a flattering top for all shapes and sizes!

HT: Hands down, The High Slim jean in white. I LOVE white jeans because they make any outfit pop, and The High Slim has all of the best design elements: a higher rise (HELLO comfort in the waistline!), the perfect amount of destruction, and a stretchy yet gutsy fabric that’s comfortable and not sheer!

The Truth About Eating Disorders At Work

One survivor's inpsiring story.

Christina Grasso, know to IG as The Pouf, just launched a peer support network for women with eating disorders. In collaboration with Ruthie Friedlander, Special Projects Director at InStyle, the women have unveiled The Chain, the first peer-led support network exclusively for women in fashion, beauty, and entertainment struggling with eating disorders.

They co-founders connected over their shared history and the difficulty of navigating a career in fashion while actively working toward recovery.

The below is Christina's story and strength.

###

The most challenging moment of my young life came when I, a high-achieving, seemingly together 19-year-old college student had to admit that despite my carefully-crafted pretense, I was not okay. That I, someone who seemingly had it all, was in the midst of a life-or-death battle with anorexia nervosa.

I needed help.

It baffles me to think that had it been any sort of primarily physical ailment, like a broken bone or a gaping wound, I wouldn’t have so vehemently denied it and struggled in silence for so long. But the reality is that most people hesitate to ask for or accept help because of the shame and stigma that clouds mental illness. I felt embarrassed, ashamed, and alone. Which may be why only 10 percent of those who struggle with an eating disorder ever seek help–the rest are left to their own devices to fight a disease that has the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric illnesses. And had I not gotten help, as defiant and ambivalent as I was, it’s highly likely I would have died from heart failure.

While admitting I needed help was, as they say, the first step to recovery, I was naive to the fact that the process would require constant honesty because eating disorders thrive in the dark.

The space between that crucial moment in college and today, almost a decade later, has been turbulent. I’ve bounced in and out of treatment centers and hospitals; my earnest efforts to get better sabotaged by a ruthless illness that started to rear its ugly head at the age of 12. I would take two steps forward and several steps back, which ultimately landed me, at my worst, hospitalized with a feeding tube. Though I am now in recovery, it’s an unimaginably difficult, everyday battle to stay in recovery. And along with a solid support system, it’s been my decision to disclose my history with eating disorders–not just in the workplace but publicly—that has given me the momentum to keep going.

When I graduated college and started my first job around 5 years ago, I subscribed to the widely-held belief that drawing a line in the sand through personal and professional matters wasn’t just standard practice, but of vital importance. That line quickly faded, though, when I chose to disclose my history in a story for a major publication. The article detailed my battle with anorexia, and knowing my colleagues would likely see it, I made the choice to be transparent with them ahead of time to avoid any unnecessary awkwardness. Doing so felt backward and uncomfortable, especially as a fiercely private individual. Part of me felt like disclosing my illness would lead to the demise of a career I had just begun, but something in my gut told me it was what I needed to do. Stepping out of my comfort zone and into the vast unknown was terrifying, but I knew it had to be better than standing in secrecy and fear for the rest of my life.

The response I received from my peers and colleagues was, and continues to be, overwhelmingly positive. After spending months—years, even—catastrophizing over what people would think, I was mostly met with empathy, curiosity, and support. In a way, it has kept me accountable in my recovery because since most people I’ve worked with are at least somewhat aware of my history, I know I can’t get away with disordered behaviors without it being somewhat obvious. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always easy. Because my job requires a great deal of social functions, and ones that often involve food, I’ve really had to learn to embrace the discomfort, which is ever-present. Over the years, something that has helped me tremendously is repeatedly giving myself to situations that are anxiety-provoking. While that may sound slightly masochistic, I remind myself to “fake it ‘til you make it,” and that doing the things of which we’re fearful is what breeds growth. And over time, I have grown a great deal and it really has gotten easier.

It has also opened up a whole new window of meaningful opportunities and relationships.. About 5 years ago, shortly after that article went live, I connected with Project HEAL, a non-profit that provides financial assistance to those battling eating disorders who cannot afford treatment. Today, I sit on their board and lead their public relations efforts, speak at schools about my recovery, and most recently have been privileged to consult with them on the new Netflix film, To the Bone. Together, these have been some of the most rewarding and energizing experiences which reaffirm both my recovery and my vulnerability in being open about it.
